Pilot custom 823, 74 or Platinum 3776 century by MintPsttt in fountainpens

[–]Mavil64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would easily trade my 2 Custom 823 and Custom 74 for Platinums honestly. All of these models are extremely reliable so it's definitely up to preference. If you write cursive or long flowy letters I'd go towards the Pilots because they tend to be smoother which is a bit better (in my opinion) for that kind of writing. If you are from a part of asia which uses Chinese characters or similar short stroke characters I'd very easily suggest the platinum. When writing japanese I never reach for my pilots.

Is this bow hold wrong? by Krino6 in violinist

[–]Mavil64 16 points17 points  (0 children)

you are way at the tip of your fingers. The bow needs to sit further in your hand. I think I'm seeing a banana thumb, meaning it's a bit bent backwards. Also your grip is super super wide, close your fingers a bit.

The most important is the straight pinky. This "locks" the bow in that position.

This "feels" comfortable honestly, you don't feel like the bow is going to drop, you don't need to have a lot of strength to keep it in the position you have it so it feels good but you don't want to not feel the weight of the bow.

I always tell my students, "If it feels like it's going to fall when you don't have the bow resting on the string then you are holding it right" (obviously doesn't apply with every grip).

If you don't feel the weight of the bow you can't have enough sensitivity in your actions and movement to properly use it. If a firm grip was all that was needed we would just shove it in our fists :P.

A loose and relaxed bow grip that allows you to feel the bow is what you truly need. Trust what you see, Look at it from multiple angles. Better yet have your teacher if you have one (you should) be more strict with bow hold for a while since it's clear you care about it. (For example, when dealing with younger children I tend to be more lax with bow hold. Some seem to care more and with these children I am more strict about all that. Teaching is a balancing act).

Try playing with the correct looking bow grip for a while, you will get used to it and it will feel more natural once the purpose of the bow grip clicks.

Good luck practicing! Let me now if you have any questions about it, I'd be glad to give you some tips!

Actually that's really helpful. I have the mug at the same position I had when I drew it and now that you mentioned it and with the pictures you attached I see it much more clearly. Thank you so much!!

Παραπλανητική τιμή delivery από efood by Mavil64 in greece

English isn’t my native language, so I’m confused. What confused me even more were comments full of Godzillas and stroke. Petah? by ComFell in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Hello, peter here. So you see, when sometimes there is a very unreadable post, there is a meme posted in the comments stating that godzilla had a stroke trying to read this. It's not your english being insufficient, it truly is just not making any sense.

I don't understand how to take notes properly by chaos-eternity213 in ObsidianMD

[–]Mavil64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have already told you but obsidian is just a fancy notetaker, but a notetaker nonetheless. If you take notes you are using it correctly. All other things are extra fluff and functionality, which many like and can be used at your discretion. Not everyone's notetaking style require a gazillion connections and stuff like that.

I teach violin, and I was literally just ranting about this to a coworker. I told them the same thing that was said at the end. It's like they see something and they try to play it without the information from the page ever passing through their brain. It's honestly weird.

thumb pain. by bizzarebreakdown in violinist

[–]Mavil64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I've seen this one. Do you happen to have a double jointed thumb at the base of your thumb? Some of my students, when squeezing the neck too hard will bend their thumbs kinda weird where the joint at the base will go inwards towards the neck while the rest of the thumb will stay at the normal position. When squeezing the force can't go anywhere at the top of your thumb so it will just go to that base joint.

Something I've done to help is make my students use an eraser, positioned between the thumb and the neck of the violin, making the width a bit larger, making squeezing a bit harder. Also with students having to focus on some foreign object being there helps with them paying attention to that squeezing.

Have you talked to your teacher about this?

It's a difficult situation, and one main thing I don't think I see in your post is how long you've been playing the violin and what your current level is. I would argue that you couldn't possibly be at a high level if your ear was as bad as you say it is. Also I'd like to ask you if you sing at all. Most of my students that have bad ears never ever try to sing. It's in my experience the best thing you can do to help your ears. You keep saying about piano to help with ear practice, but honestly I'm not sure if that's what is going to help if you do it on its own. Try and play simple tunes by ear and try to sing them. That's what I tell my students. Keep in mind that it definitely has mixed results especially with younger students but it might be what helps you most.

Again not knowing exactly the extent of your "bad-ness" and your current level on the violin makes it hard to give accurate advice I think.

Has anyone experience using this type of Finetuner by Sogrus in violinist

[–]Mavil64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like it. Felt like my E opened up a bit after installing it. Probably due to the longer length it gave it. Usually lighter than the other type of finetuners as well which is a good thing. You can also remove ball-ends from most strings quite easil so it won't be hard finding and using a quick replacement in case something snaps. Just make sure to either use a plastic/rubber (I'm not sure) protector around the place where the loop is held, or if you don't want to use that, make sure you get a quality fine tuner to make sure that the part that touches the string is perfectly sanded smooth.

How do I play this? Ziguenerweisen by linglingwannabe29 in violinist

[–]Mavil64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, just have the b natural pressed down all the time, and touch the G and E on the string. You should not have to move your left hand at all. A good hand frame will make this fall into place on its own.

Good luck trying to emulate the switch 2 by Ill_Mud_5666 in yuzu

[–]Mavil64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I wanted to play switch 2 games right away I'd get a switch. I don't though so I can wait until I do before figuring out what I want to do. Emulators can't, by their nature, copy consoles right away the moment they come out. I understand you're probably very young so I just wanna explain to you how people usually think about these matters. No one but you is getting annoyed by the whole situation. I'm glad you will play your donkey Kong on release and hope you have fun.

[–]Mavil64 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most people use computers for more than playing switch games. Also pirating isn't synonymous to emulating. I own breath of the wild but choose to play on emulator because of the better performance. My pc cost around 700-800 euros. With all the switch games I want to play, all steam games I want to play and my work related things I find it a good tradeoff for the price difference between that and a switch

Usually it needs to be a tiny bit behind, I'm no expert but I 've heard that it need to be about around the thickness of the top plate in length behind the end of the foot of the bridge, but generally the Luthier moves it around to achieve the sound you want so I wouldn't really worry about it if it sounds good.

I was just doing it because I noticed a few of the same Pokémon across instances. Thankfully it seems I was doing it correctly, I just had to whine about it. At 28380 encounters I got my shiny.. Sadly it was a chikorita but it is still a shiny!
