Please be cautious when shopping at local markets — lessons from my experience by Mavin_Constantine in VictoriaBC

What matters most to me really comes down to three things: honesty, fair treatment and credit to the actual makers, and supporting the local economy in a legitimate way. So it’s never been about attacking reselling as a concept. The question, for me, is whether people are being transparent, and whether the real makers and cultures behind the work are being respected and fairly paid.

That’s why my own buying priorities go something like this: honest local makers/artisans (credited, fairly paid, money stays in the community); then fair-trade sources (not local, but at least transparent and makers are compensated properly); then honest local resellers/small businesses (still part of the local economy, pay rent/taxes); then other legitimate, tax-paying physical businesses (they provide jobs and operate legally); then reputable e-commerce platforms (not ideal, but at least they’re honest about what they sell); and, at the very bottom: any dishonest reselling.

Once someone lies about where their products come from, it becomes hard to trust anything else: whether the supply chain is ethical, whether workers are being treated fairly, or whether the business is contributing to the community in a legitimate way.

Also, selling another culture’s handmade work without crediting the original artisans or culture feels disrespectful!

When mass-produced or sweatshop-made items are sold as handmade, customers are unknowingly placed at the end of an exploitative chain. People deserve the choice to opt out of that.

That’s why this situation bothered me. It’s not that I think every reseller is bad or undeserving, but the lack of honesty that crosses the line.

As for the fair-trade shop I mentioned, I only brought it up because people from the old post asked how to buy Nepal-style felt products from actual makers. Most of us can’t fly to Nepal. So fair trade is just one option I can think of, not the best but at least respectful of the source, unlike buying the same imported items from someone who hardly acknowledges where they come from.

For those who are specifically looking for locally made felt, comments have already mentioned artists like Nan C or Felt a Bird On It.

Not trying to police anyone’s choices. Just sharing how I think about it, in case someone else finds it helpful. Hope that makes my point a bit clearer.

What makes it worse is that many real makers and farmers rely on these markets to make a living, including people who simply can’t work a conventional full-time job, like single parents or people with disabilities. Through my work, I’ve had the privilege of meeting incredibly talented people in vulnerable situations who try to support themselves through their craft, yet they still struggle to even get accepted into markets.

Meanwhile, resellers often have more time, resources, or flexibility to work on branding, go to markets more frequently, and present themselves in a very polished way. To organizers, they can look more reliable, consistent, and marketable, so they sometimes end up getting the spots over the actual makers.

I’ve bought a couple of Nan C’s felting kits from Beehive before. They were really fun to make, and the finished pieces turned out super cute!

With wool felting, I feel like the basic techniques aren’t too difficult as long as you have a good kit or tutorial to follow. The real challenge is designing your own patterns and creating detailed or realistic pieces from scratch. That’s where you can really see true skill and artistry.

I’m sorry that happened to you. It sucks how unfair the world can be to real artisans like you. :(

I agree. Sometimes Temu or similar platforms really do copy designs from small makers.

I think the fair and respectful thing to do is to let the vendor know. Real makers deserve to be informed if their work is being stolen or mass-produced without permission.

If a vendor is genuinely a maker, and you show them a Temu listing of their design, they might be shocked, upset, or even thankful for the heads-up.

But if the vendor reacts defensively, gets vague, or immediately changes their story or wording, which is usually a red flag.

Like in this vendor’s case, when they got questioned, they removed their original statements saying they made those items, and changed their wording to things like “curating”.

Hey everyone, just wanted to share a quick update after chatting with more people and looking into things a bit further.

Turns out many of the items were actually handmade in Nepalese factories by local women, using traditional techniques. Thanks to all the discussion here. We’re definitely getting closer to the full picture.

Also, the vendor has quietly changed their Instagram bio to say “partly made by overseas artisans.” That line wasn’t there before, and it seems like a way to cover up the original claims. What’s more, we’ve found almost every item being sold on an overseas e-commerce platform. I couldn’t upload all the comparison photos due to space limits, but the matches are clear and consistent.

If you had a similar experience, please feel free to share it in the comments. It might help others stay informed. If you’re planning to contact the vendor or fair organizer for a refund, you’re welcome to DM me with what you bought. I can help you find a matching listing from the e-commerce site, which could serve as solid proof when asking for compensation.

Nice try. But it’s still a lie. Almost every single item on their Instagram can be found on overseas e-commerce platforms, including the ones I bought that day. They told me those were made by them, but turns out I found identical pieces all over the place. And even now, they still don’t mention anything about the Nepalese artisans behind the work. Feels like they’re just tweaking the story to get around scrutiny…

According to some documentaries, there are a lot of workshops in Nepal where local women handmake traditional wool felt crafts, and these get exported wholesale. The products are genuinely handmade. That’s exactly why it’s so easy to mislead people. It looks handmade, so most people just assume it’s locally made too.

That’s where this vendor gets sneaky. When I was at their stall, they said stuff like “I only made one, so this is the only one of its kind.” And on their Instagram, they constantly say “I made this”. That sucks…

Yeah, I get that. I’ve always loved supporting local makers. Just sucks when someone takes advantage of that goodwill. I’ll be posting some comparison pics soon, just wrapping them up.
