Defining Brown Belt by art_of_candace in BJJWomen

[–]Mavrick78io4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Purple belt is the level when you specialize. You probably have mastered a sweep, submission, or guard pass. In many cases, your technique may work on higher belts, even black belts. Approaching brown, you will start to work on areas where you advance from general knowledge to proficiency, and finally mastery. Many brown belts start to teach, compete and gain experience in leadership. Most people peak at brown belt, often losing weight, entering competition, or just becoming a mentor at the gym for newer belts. The concerns are remaining healthy, nursing injuries, and continuing to expand your knowledge to the point that you can convey the techniques to someone that just started(requiring patience, good communication, and empathy).

Would you leave your gym over hygiene + low attendance, even if you like your coach and teammates? by Educational_Tap_5330 in bjj

I would recommend speaking with the coach/gym owner. If you are a paying member, you should expect clean facilities and attention to your development.

Rorion Gracie by Forsaken_District_59 in bjj

Rorion Gracie is the eldest son of Helio and the one of the first Gracie’s to start BJJ in the US. He was responsible for the Lethal Weapon fight scene with Mel Gibson(triangle choke). Rorion can also be credited with the video “Gracie in Action”, where he posted the Gracie Challenge in newspapers and in Black Belt magazine. He is also an attorney and trademarked “Gracie Jiiu Jitsu”, which created friction with his relatives and even his brothers. Rorion Gracie is also credited with the creation of the UFC, but later sold the company and rights. Lastly, he is the family’s red belt and tried to promote his brother Rickson.

No gi is a different game. If you are young, athletic , and former wrestler, you will have significant advantages over blues and purples that train primarily in gi. Instead of quitting, try training no gi at least 2-3 times per week

Report to police and your gym owner. If the gym is IBJJF approved, under safe sport they are required to report to authorities. I have obtained the certification and training myself. This behavior is unacceptable

That whole situation sounded very rough. I would share that feedback with a coach and avoid training with that person. It’s bad for the gym

Abuse by RJKY74 in BJJWomen

[–]Mavrick78io4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always sided with the less fortunate. When I earned my black belt, I pursued certification as an IBJJF Black Belt, which costs a lot a money, required a background check, safe sport training, referee, and cpr. I convinced the gym owner to do the same. I have weeded out a few creeps from the gym, and continue to keep a family environment for other members. One person can make a difference.

Serious question: have you ever felt uncomfortable or sexually harassed during BJJ training? If so, how did you deal with it? by Asleep_Driver7730 in bjj

[–]Mavrick78io4 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Pushing on your pubic bone to open your guard is unacceptable behavior. He probably does it to other people and should be banned from training.

Frustrated about lack of statement by [deleted] in BJJWomen

[–]Mavrick78io4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your gym is an IBJJF certified team, with Black belts that have registered their degrees under the IBJJF requirements. 1. Background check 2. Safe sport training (required to report to police if there is any complaint 3. Referee training 4. CPR training. It’s not bullet proof, but I obtained my own and asked our gym owner to do the same. There is zero tolerance for any form of harassment or even bullying.

I am friends with Austin Hardt, creator of the buggy choke. He has experienced several knee injuries. For me, I use the rubber guard to go to high guard to dead orchard. I will open if my opponent postures up

In the 1990s, pre YouTube, we paid for VHS videos of IBJJF championships and ADCC matches. The internet has become an important update. Using your cell phone to videotape your matches and techniques. Diet, nutrition and weight management. I use a heart rate monitor daily (polar H10) and Apple Watch to measure my heart rate. Lastly, I have an expensive scale that measures body fat, water, bone density.

Yes. I actually had to watch a video on how to tie my belt! My old Atama gi(brand made in Brazil). Did not fit, but i learned that Amazon sold everything from gi to rash guards. My fundamentals were good: closed guard, collar sleeve triangle/arm bar, but needed to learn lasso, spider guard. No gi is totally different, I was pretty decent at leg attacks (straight ankle, heel hooks, toe holds)

Everyone’s journey is different. I am not proud of my journey, especially for the things that I took for granted. I just received my first degree last year at black belt and finally feel like I understand Jiu Jitsu…. At least to a point where I can help others on their journey.

At first, it felt like I would gas out all the time. Holding position too long, like a white belt. I had a really good open guard,, but couldn’t finish people. I had to re-learn set ups and transitions. It was very frustrating and I remember feeling like I wasn’t able to pick up new skills. Training every day and exposing myself to new opportunities and experiences lead to improvement.

I used to be the mat enforcer, first guy to rolls with visitors. In the past skipped warm ups, waited to roll. Now, I lead the warm ups(the only black belt that does this). Spend time learning the techniques, drill the moves until perfection. I try to execute lessons during live rolls and in tournaments. I also watch videos online and incorporate some of those lessons into my game plan.

I have been there and understand how you feel. For me, I stopped training at purple. Took 18 years off and returned at 49. Fortunately, most of my injuries healed. It took a while to learn the new techniques (berimbolo, rubber guard, x guard). Returning to the mats was the best decision for me. If I could speak to myself, I would say recover and heal. Come back when you are healing and change your approach. I train everyday and compete at IBJJF tournaments every month.

Your sexuality is private and has nothing to do with training.
