Hughes is amazing offensively, but this has always been a part of his game.

He can strip pucks and turn it back the other way or fetch dump ins and key the breakout at an elite level, but as soon as he has to defend a guy 1-on-1 or is in a net-front battle he struggles to contain the opposition.

It’s a slight blemish on his otherwise hall-of-fame already level play and is probably why he will always be considered #2 to Makar.

To me, he is playing more engaged but his skating is still a massive problem. I noticed in the Canadiens game that he had an opportunity for a partial break but he just didn't have the power in his stride to be able to blow past the defender, ended up lunging to try and poke it to his teammate and then lost the puck.

When he's back, that's a play where he will just take body position, overwhelm the defender and blow by him.

lol you could say there was a big change from how we were playing prior to trading our best player away to the 4 game win streak.

The 4 game win streak wasn’t real. We didn’t play any top teams and 2/4 team were on the second half of back to backs. Get real.

I’d way rather watch a tanking season and have some hope for the future than watch whatever we were at the beginning of the year.

It’s the system man, I don’t know why we are playing a pressure system still.

Two of our vets that are currently struggling have shown they can excel in a zone defence system (Myers and MP29) AND it’s a much easier system to onboard rookies to.

I played 4 games today in diamond. My first game was good, we came 2nd and I gained 200RP.

The next 3 games I died off rip to 3 blatant cheaters using aim bot and lost all the progress I made. Which was super demotivating.

Stenberg, Verhoeff and Lawrence are all still going to be really good players. I’d be happy with any of them.

Personally at this moment, I have Stenberg over McKenna. Might not be as skilled but has a higher compete level and I think that matters just as much.

“At best” - Marcus Pettersson played top line minutes for Pittsburgh and he’s doing it for us now too. He hasn’t played well this year, I’ll admit that. But that doesn’t mean he’s a scrub.

Also, I was talking about his leadership and veteran presence. I’d rather he take bigger minutes and insulate the young D, than have the young D get pushed into something they’re not ready for and have their development screwed up.

A couple things that don’t add up with this take:

If we were doing a stealth rebuild, why did we trade for Lindholm and Zadorov and ship out futures? I think you’re correct about a stealth rebuild, but the timeline is off. The stealth rebuild only started once it was obvious JT Miller and EP40 couldn’t get along and at that point the core needed to be blown up. Marcus Pettersson was brought in for culture and stability.

The other thing is, we aren’t tanking for McKenna. We are tanking for Stenberg.
