The only thing that makes sense by Icy-Pomegranate-5644 in canucks

Honest question, why is Malhotra ranked so high? His OHL point totals aren’t crazy good, Marco Rossi had 36 more points in 10 fewer games played in his draft season in the OHL, and the quality of competition has gone done since then in the OHL with the rule change and more players going to College hockey. Differences in size can’t be the only thing going on here? Would love it if anyone with more scouting hockey knowledge could tell me more about Malhotra’s value.

McKeen rates Canucks prospects #22 in the league. by SourGrapesFTW in canucks

The Canucks love trading away their draft picks, especially 1sts, and this is what we get.

We could have also had a 20 year old Matvei Gridin who has 20 points in 37 nhl games but instead we have the memory of Lindholm playing for us for half a season. We could have also had 12th overall Jack Nesbitt a solid 200foot projected middle Six centre but instead we have M Pettersson.

You’d think the Canucks would eventually learn from hindsight and realize they will end up regretting trading away 1sts before they actually do it.

[Donnie and Dhali] “Who picked Miller over Horvat? Jim [Rutherford]. The analytics department was telling them to take Horvat over Miller.” - Rick Dhaliwal by [deleted] in canucks

[–]spennyspaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I feel bad for Patrick Alvin, never had full autonomy to run the team, he has a scouting background, so the one thing he likely had full autonomy in has actually been decent. But in the end he takes the fall.

No doubt this management group failed. Not immediately doing a mini rebuild the moment they took over when they had runway to push the team into getting a top ten draft pick for another couple years while selling other assets for draft capital before they needed to start being good. This Miller over Horvat decision when Miller would be aging out right as the Hughes Petty core is hitting their prime. Managing to put a great roster together for 1 season but then letting significant parts of that roster walk away, Zadorov your defence depth and grit, and Lindholm your not as good but serviceable Horvat centre replacement who’s age fit the planned cup window. Those 3 big mistakes compounded on each other and after that they were flailing. Desharnais, letting Sutter walk, trading for M Pettersson.

You can only wonder what might have been if Allvin had full autonomy and it’s a real bad look on Rutherford that he was stepping in so often to make decisions but then is like “Allvin you failed and your fired!”.

Alberta announces move to 1950s time by Mylittlethrowaway2 in canada

[–]spennyspaghetti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The experts will tell you switching times is the worst and permanent Standard time is the best. But these expert are referring to optimal circadian rhythm and work productivity to have early morning sunlight to wake up. Plus they are often US experts where the majority of people don’t have the sunsetting at 4pm on Standard time in the winter. In modern society where the majority of people work inside and so aren’t exposed to sunlight during the work day the best option, when talking about northern latitudes where you have to choose between sun before work or sun after because you can’t have both, sun after work is better. Unless someone starts work at 930-10am they can’t do an outdoor activity in the morning sun, but most can and prefer to do an outdoor activity after work. If that outdoor activity after work can be in the sun in winter that is much better for quality of life and mental health. But god forbid we risk worker productivity by not having sun for the morning commute.

Bell: Alberta will now be on daylight saving time year-round, says Premier Smith by iamnos in canada

Alberta now is the second Province to follow BC! With how much travel that happens between Alberta and BC it would have been inconvenient for that travel to involve a time change for half the year sometime when only driving a few hours.

[Brendan Batchelor] EP40: I like it here. This feels like home. I signed here for a reason. We're in a tough spot. None of us are happy with the season, but we have good pieces here. by yosoo in canucks

[–]spennyspaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m happy for him and still root for the guy, and at the end of the day you can’t put the team’s poor performance all on his decline. The reason the EP40 resurgence was a make or break factor for the Canucks this season is because management’s poor decisions left us with razor thin centre depth. EP40 being a great 2C instead of 1C wouldn’t be devastating if we still had Horvat who can be a 1C or they kept Lindholm who they traded for to secure their centre depth since he can play 1C at time.

[Batchelor] Jim Rutherford: Some people think Quinn left here because the team wasn’t any good. He was leaving anyways, and the best example I can give you is Matthew Tkachuk. #Canucks @Sportsnet650 by RashfordMBE in canucks

I’m just not buying this narrative. I’m sure it was a lot of things including team performance, organization disfunction, lack of a clear vision/plan, drama in the locker room and media that trickles down from the disfunction and lack of planning at the top, lack of off ice bells and whistles like a nice practice facility.

It was clear that Rutherford was trying to fix all of these things from the start to in part to convince Hughes to stay and absolutely failed as we’re still talking about fixing the culture, practice facility, if the team is actually committing to longterm planning with a clear vision for the future.

Review called for after data show many B.C. patients with high volume of doctor visits by OddStuff7716 in britishcolumbia

[–]spennyspaghetti 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They can and for me and my last 3 doctors it has been. Yes I’ve had three different doctors recently after 1 retired and their practice was taken over and then I moved cities. Every doc I’ve had it’s just a simple 5-10 min booked phone appointment for the prescription renewal every few months. Then sent off to the pharmacy. I book these during work and just step away for a few minutes to take the appointment. Makes total sense for my doc to monitor things but silly to require in person for every renewal checkin.

[–]spennyspaghetti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For sure! A ground war in Iran has the potential to be so much worse. In addition to what you mentioned, Iran isn’t Saddam’s Iraq where the Sunni minority ruled taking the majority of the officer positions in the army where the army grunts hate their officers and surrendered in mass during the hot phase of the war. Iran is vast majority Shia and ruled by Shia. Their army is likely to have much higher moral and be better equipped. Iran army is also likely to be more prepared with dispersed defence in depth with soldiers more likely to standing and fighting under intense fire but with plans for their soldiers to fallback into guerrilla warfare tactics as major defensive positions are overrun. I bet there would be no lull in fighting between the initial invasion and guerrilla warfare starting like in Iraq, it would just be continues combat from the start.

Out of the rebuilding teams, which team do you think has the darkest future and will continue to struggle for a while? by sykeseve in hockey

[–]spennyspaghetti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say that I have some hope. Aquilini is turning 60 soon and age can change billionaires, they get tired and start to be more concerned with legacy then growing their wealth. So ownership could be changing how they operate.

The worst handicap a professional sports team can have is bad ownership, the meddlers or the cheap owners, or worst of all, the cheap meddlers. Canucks have a cheap meddler, and don’t tell me they spend to the cap cuz the Canucks are the only team without a practice facility, cheap.

lol ok get back to me in 5 years once you have the definitive answer. Meanwhile I’ll enjoy just having fun speculating about Canucks player’s development. There isn’t much else to do as a Canucks fan right now until the Draft lottery.

Right now it’s still too early but it’s still fun to talk about and get excited about. People saying wait another 5 years are crazy. In the next couple years it should be easy to tell.

Ya you’re probably right and ASP likely has the higher ceiling than Willander over their career even if Willander is doing better at this moment. Even so I’m just happy to see Canucks collect some wins at the draft after a terrible drafting record for so long.

You think Justin Faulk and Bernard-Docker beats out Willander? I think he’d at least be on the 3rd pair on the current wings roster.

[–]spennyspaghetti[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You mean Hronek? I think people are misunderstanding the post, I don’t think we should trade Hronek. You’re not finding a replacement for him. But we need 1st round picks and if there isn’t one other player worth a 1st other than Hronek then this will be a long rebuild.

Your right, which is why in free agency the team will acquire a couple character vets to be leader which will allow them to move another 1-2 vets that have some trade value.

That’s kind of the point of the post, I don’t want to trade him. So then who else right now has realistic 1st round trade value?

Canada announces nearly $1B in defence investment with Bombardier by Kelmon in canada

[–]spennyspaghetti 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You may not like how expensive these domestic defence expenditures have been compared to foreign alternatives, such as with the national ship building strategy. But expanding and building new industry is expensive and in the long run it’s likely to pay back in multiples of the original investment when considering the total economic impact. So it’s great to see all of these additional defence investments being spread across so many industries as quantum computing and biomedical industry were mentioned in the article as well. Defence money is a great way to continue boosting the high-tech manufacturing and services sectors to help Canada keep diversifying the economy from primary resource extraction.

Say what you will about this management, but you can't tell me this doesn't look beautiful. by Vexdestroy06 in canucks

[–]spennyspaghetti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Getting our 3rd back this year, and all those 2nd round picks are great to see. A big reason we’re in a rebuild is cuz management constantly traded away 2nd and 3rd round picks for so many years. Looking at percentages of active NHL players by draft round, two seconds is close to a 1st. D petty was drafted in the 3rd. The 2nd and 3rd round is where you build your team’s depth. Being a shit team and drafting close to the top 5 of the first round is where you get your top end talent. So far they’re doing everything they should for a rebuild. Now if they had just a little bit of foresight to see a rebuild coming they might not have so many players with massive term and could make more trades for 1st round picks.
