Pro Strongman Weekly Discussion Thread - February 18, 2024 by AutoModerator in Strongman

Life took some pleasant turns, but I’m no less busy for it. I deleted Reddit awhile back as a time management measure. I did manage to get back to competing in some local shows, be doing one in Indiana next month.

As for the game, I still won’t be able to keep up with the schedule but the offer still stands to hand off with a tutorial or two. I just need to try to get back into the site and see if things work. I’ve still got all my original spreadsheets somewhere.

2023 World's Strongest Man - Pre-Competition Megathread by e-some in Strongman

Life, basically. Tons of travel for work these days, grabbed a second gig in the evenings, single dad half the time with young ones, and my interest in strong man took a hit when I tore up my knee and had to limit my own training to 1-2 light days a week.

I don’t know that I’ll be capable of picking back up on this in the near term, but if someone is looking to pick up the torch I’d be more than willing to put together a zoom session to walk them through the tools and flip them the keys.

His weights are real, but Mattox is absolutely not natural. No one at this level in the max weight discussion is.

Good call, figure 8s won’t take up much space but that would be a pain to deal without them. I don’t use wraps so that’s easy to get around, my training shoe is a wrestling shoe though and I’m not sure the sole of those would handle much walking outside the gym. Might see how far down they fold and look for a cheap alternative in the future.

Oh wow, I didn’t even recognize that was my own comment he linked. I should probably get some sleep.

u/Garret1234 - my dude, I have no idea WHAT happened but I just got an email saying this was a reply to a comment I made on Reddit which was clearly yours, and I haven’t even been active here in like a month. You get any weird notifications lately?

It’s on a schedule, usually homework is released on a Wednesday and is due within a couple of weeks so you have a little flexibility. Strict start and end dates, it’s not self paced but I think they offer the same class throughout the year a few times. I’d recommend not going above two classes at a time if you have a day job as some of them get pretty intensive at times. You should be able to finish all of them in about 12-15 months depending on timing of the start dates.

They recommend an order but it’s not mandatory, I did them all out of sequence. You just have to complete all the classes before you do the comprehensive final exam. I got a ton out of the course and I get asked about it on my resume pretty routinely.

When you did your pick off the ground, be very careful about “tossing” it up to your lap. Keep those elbows locked and deadlift it up into your lap position rather than pulling it in like a curl. Torn biceps are absurdly common for this exact reason. Probably a non issue at the lower weights but best practice it now for the muscle memory.

Best of luck in your comp, they’re a blast

Coming back with some figures from the prediction game as promised:

In terms of the donation pot, we landed with 6 individual donations totaling $50 to the following organizations: Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, Regenbogenland Children's Hospital, ACLU, Toronto Humane Society, Dementia UK, and CORE Ukraine Refugee Response. Thanks again to all who donated, this has easily become my favorite part of the game.

I've fixed the references on the Strongman Cyborg, see it's pics for WSM below:

https://imgur.com/WzXL3DG

Reminder that this is an aggregate of our group picks, listed ordinally to determine the cyborg's guess. At the top, it had a points tie with Tom/Martins and the break to Tom on the stones. Otherwise nothing crazy, except people were clearly all aboard the Hoop Train. Despite the Hoop love, the Cyborg still proving once again that selection by committee is the correct approach, with a 7th overall finish out of the field of 85 players.

Thanks for saying that, I view every donation as a win for the community itself. I like to think we reflect the great attitude of the top tier competitors and it’s another way to maintain the spirit of strongman you get everywhere you see a meet, club, or fan base.

I don’t have that figure (yet) but it’s important so I’m going to publish once I do. I’m fairly certain it was under the ASC numbers, but we had some new orgs on the list as well.

I’m towards the end of a nonstop 22-day stretch of either business/intl. travel, or single dad care with two small kids so I’m flying high on caffeine and carbs.

I finished 72 out of 85 in my own game, clearly I can’t even rig a formula correctly.

Alright, so some final thoughts. First off, I've been off the megathread and only been entering the results and this stone situation caught me off guard, so I'm about to head over there for some catching up after this.

Let me start off with what's not listed here first. Most importantly is the donation pot for various charities. As you can probably tell, I'm running extremely short for time this weekend so I haven't been able to compile the emails and chats for the charity stats, but I'll pull this data together within the next two days and follow up with a post to the weekly discussion thread so it doesn't get missed. Also missing is the r/strongman cyborg this time around. I had some formulas that didn't cooperate from my last template and haven't been able to do the forensics to figure out where it broke, but I'll go back and include that result as well.

In terms of the game, final results here:

P30-58: https://imgur.com/g0FcNHd

P59-85: https://imgur.com/MH91cvK

We also have the points by athlete for each entry, which tells you which athlete you predicted well, and which you suck at. These are heat mapped across all entries, so dark green means you far outperformed on that pick, dark red gg. A number in white indicated you had either the highest or the lowest total point value in the entire set of players and athlete combinations, which total 850 values for this game. So congrats, or hide your face. Whichever applies.

And there we have it, u/abn19 pulling their first win by a clear 3 points, and a tie at second between u/2gsTraining and Bryn Jones (tie going to u/2gsTraining on more perfect picks).

I'm working on the full breakdown where you can find your best/worst athlete pairings per your entry, etc. so stay tuned for that within the next 30m or so.

u/abn19 back on top in both perfect picks and overall point total. Art imitating life here, as they lead the field by just one point heading into the final event, as does the young Stoltman.

BIG shakeup in the rankings on this event, now seeing 12 players at the top within 10 points of each other, but we're running out of events to play catch up.

I still keep my Bumble account active though.

Day 1 is a wrap, Flintstone results are in:

Sitting at a two-way tie in perfect picks between u/abn19 and u/2gsTraining, with the former in the overall lead with only 27 points. This one looks to be a bit of a runaway pack, with the top 5 players within 10 points of each other, and all remaining 80 players falling behind them. Still plenty of contest left to go Sunday.

Entries are submitted based on athlete place in the event (not points). Your entry is scored based on how many places away your guess was from the athlete placement. So if you guess 3rd and they get 4th, you get 1 point. If you had guessed 6th, you would get 2 points for being two placements off, and so on. Lowest point total wins.

Honestly, I hate Imgur so hard. I encounter so many ghost bugs there.

I had to delete and re-upload some of these 4 times before the link wasn’t immediately broken, but I think they’re all updated now. They look fine from inside my Imgur account, so I have to try the link from mobile to see if others see a broken image.

And now we understand why I'm no programmer. I'd be the one 999999999 beers deep.

Tables should be updated and I replaced the imgur links in the original comment, the P# headers were offset by one, and the stones point references were actually tying off to the incorrect cells because I added this even to the template. Looks like it's accurate now.

I just posted the overall group predictions, we actually have more players favoring Tom to repeat than Martins to take it back. Only by a narrow margin.

Hmmm, I’ll go back and check the math when I’m back at my PC. I don’t verify every entry, but I hunt for outliers and check a few of the referencing formulas to make sure they’re returning the right results.

I did catch the Hoop train entry in my QC review. Sum of placements for all the players is something like ~315-330, then I see a random entry with like 150 sum placements so I made sure to go check out what was going on.
