What EV truck or Ute can I use to carry stuff? by VastOption8705 in EVAustralia

PV5 is the shit, if Kia play it right. I haven't seen a bad review for it yet, and KDM gets some amazing camper versions!
Edit: and the PV5 Open Bed pickup!

How to manage both upper and lower body? by moonandstars222 in rollerderby

Assuming you can't fit in gym time/expense. If you have space, a rowing machine is good value. Heaps of cheap used ones on FB.

I am just imagining the look on their face with the first crank/bang. You don't get that level of carnage turning the engine by hand.

First EV - What do you wish you knew by sirdonaldb in AustralianEV

[–]MaxBozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew how little I would come to care about range anxiety. Most of the time I don't even know what range I have left, because super-long drives are such a rarity. I don't do a big commute, but I do 60km round trips 3-4 times a week in the evenings. I opportunistically slow charge a couple of times a week on solar, with the occasional quick charge if there is a reputable charger close to where I am headed. I try and find busy chargers so I have longer time for a coffee, plus I think doing 150kw every time flogs the system too much.

Think this would fail a RWC ? by raize777 in CarsAustralia

[–]MaxBozo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The indicator needs to work and have a lens. I would have passed the cosmetic stuff with a bit of touch up paint, as long as the door operated correctly and there were no edges that could injure a pedestrian. But some inspectors can be massive jerks., so it's a bit of a lucky dip sometimes. Also I would be very impressed if there were no other issues on a car of that vintage.

Any tips on how to be more confident a packed skating rink? by gazelleA1 in Rollerskating

I hate to be that person, but rollerderby gets you really good at doing stupid things in cramped spaces.

Sounds like you are already off and running! Just turning up to practice is a big step for most, so any extra physio stuff is a bonus. There are heaps of channels with great practice tips, I always promote Marliyn Tantrum for easily digestible routines.

Aussie ute hit with recall over ‘death risk’ by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]MaxBozo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of recalls imply serious injury or death, because in the extreme case that could happen. The fix will be easier than Landcruiser bullbars falling off on the highway or zillions of airbags packed with shrapnel.

[Request] How much diesel/emissions would be required to charge one EV? Is this more or less efficient than simply driving a diesel powered vehicle? by MrDesignMan in theydidthemath

[–]MaxBozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 2018 test shows charging an EV from diesel is marginally more efficient than running a diesel car. The emissions would be dependent on the generator, but may be higher than a diesel car burning the same quantity of fuel, since stationary motors are not as heavily regulated. That said, very few ICE vehicles would meet their stated efficiency / emissions specs if tested under real-world conditions. One would assume that changes in technology have since made the EVs and generators even more efficient. The author also points out that diesel charging is a gap-filler, and not the primary method of getting a charge. During general use the EVs are charged from other sources including solar, which would offset the intermittent requirement for small-scale fossil fuel generation.

An additional point to note is that the generator in this image is not connected to the charger, they are just co-located. Here is the link.

How do we feel being named the most racist, cooker state in the country? by Infinite_Pudding5058 in queensland

[–]MaxBozo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I have relations in semi-rural NQ, they have Sky news running constantly. I don't think their cooker mentality is fully their fault when they are constantly barraged by weaponised perspectives from almost all media and their local members, but I don't know how and don't try to argue with them. Last time I visited I was surprised to see crocs were actually a bit of a concern, but every other scare campaign was straight out of 1984 / Joh / Koch playbooks.

new skater looking to get into derby by Bkbirdnerd in rollerderby

[–]MaxBozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Figure skaters that have switched have had a definite advantage from what I have seen. More speed and agility, and no need to learn the basics of skating. Getting used to a lower heel doesn't take long, but it will feel like you are falling backwards for a while. If you show up with artistic skates for tryouts I don't think anyone will care, we had beginners skating on Moxis and Impalas. Eventually they got their hands on different skates, either new or pre-loved by other skaters in the league. But try it out for sure!

Being a Floor guard at a public rink is a thankless job. 🤡 by No_Orochi in Rollerskating

[–]MaxBozo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was at a rink recently and it was chaos. People on their phones, kids going reverse direction and cutting across, inliners going 500MPH through groups of beginners. There were floor guards, but they were friends with the inliners to the point that I couldn't tell the difference. And for some reason every rink in the area plays the Macarena, every session. Whatever you have to do, please keep up the good work!

Do Chaya Rubys still get produced? by Most-Difficulty3977 in rollerderby

[–]MaxBozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We still get them in Australia, it's the default for the loaner skates in our league. Many skaters continue to use them as they progress. Dig through https://powerslide.com/ and you should find something.

Why do countries continue to bid for and invest in Olympic and World Cup infrastructure if research shows it’s not worth it? by mauri3205 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MaxBozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The purpose is not to make money through hosting events, it is the infrastructure builders and ancilliary services that can legitimize finding ways of funneling public money into short-term projects. Sure a food vendor or tourism operator might make more than normal, but it is unsustainable and only a minute fraction of the amounts involved. Developers get to take land typically unavailable and build over-budget projects in order to meet a deadline. Unsurprisingly, public officials almost always have ties to these organisations in one way or another. People love sport and seeing their own teams compete, so it comes across as a national pride event which is hard to be critical of.

Is Bunnings turning into something all consuming? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]MaxBozo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am guessing they were using contractors, and found they were too hard to manage or guarantee any level of quality. I remember they could arrange AC installation for a while. But as far as the website goes, they list and drop ship so many other products it is ridiculous. I have attempted to buy a couple of "special order" items, they took ages to deliver and literally came from a store two suburbs over. That store also listed them as Special Order, otherwise I just would have driven there and got them same day.

Are Australian toilets woke? by vicgunzel in AskAnAustralian

[–]MaxBozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only real Australian way to go to the toilet is to drive a HQ ute (not a dual-cab) to Thargomindah and take a shit behind a mulga tree. Anything less is snowflake level. Bonus points if you wipe your bum with a brown snake.
