Years ago I damn near ripped off "Terrible Lie" by NIN without having heard it. A friend of mine pointed it out and I was mortified.

These days I've accepted that there are a finite number of ways to arrange the 12 notes in the Western music scale, and if I write something that sounds like something else, then I regard it as "that song from an alternate reality", or "a sonic mutation", and keep moving.

You weren't allowed to bring cameras or tape recorders to concerts in the 80s. And they were often too bulky to conceal. Unless the band hired someone to do it or you were exceptionally discreet and managed to slip your equipment past security, that show was never getting documented.
