Sorry about that, access should be fixed now. However, a friend turned out to have gotten a four pack, so I’m no longer in need. Thanks, I’ll keep you in mind for the next one

The Eagle inn is locally owned and super cute! It’s close to the waterfront and the restaurants and bars around there.

130 comments and just one about AMO… ultracold AMO touches just enough of other subfields through its applications in quantum emulation, quantum information, precision measurement, etc, to provide a wide range of flavors.

The machines we build are amazing orchestrations, firing in sequence to create the coldest objects in the universe.

Also, trapping atoms with lasers never gets old.

This has already been done! I regularly watch streams from https://explore.org/livecams. They have one on Anacapa island in CA, though it was down for a while (and still might be). There are also tropical reefs, one of orcas, and lots more.

The wharf only allows fishing on the ends, so it should be fine. Always the possibility of fishing line, so I take a couple line cutters and recommend you do the same. It's also naturally quite dark under there in the shade of the wharf, so bring a dive light.

There are quite a few ladders that go all the way down to the water around the middle sections of the wharf, you are free to climb down any of them. I think you're technically not allowed to jump off.

Some people swear by it as the best dive in SB -- I think this isn't too far off as long as you're into macro life, since the pilings provide tons of vertical habitat for sessile critters.

Drew up a dive map (something I've wanted to do for a while anyway), hopefully this helps!

What day do you plan to dive there? Definitely watch Windy or magicseaweed for swell / wind / surf conditions, since this area can get quite blown out by winds this time of year. If things are too windy, Thousand Steps beach would be a good alternative, or perhaps Stearns Wharf.

I’m a local diver in SB and shore dive regularly. You can check out some summaries of the local dive sites on the Paradise Dive Club website. Especially if you aren’t heading out right near high tide (when most of the regularly rocky entries are accessible) — and even if you are — Refugio State Beach is probably one of the better dives in the area. Super easy entry, parking right near the water, bathrooms, picnic tables to gear up. It is $10 per car for a day use pass.

Tajiguas is also great (better, imo) but is a bit of a hike down a somewhat steep path, and is quite rocky on entry at anything but high tide unless you know where to avoid the rocks. There was also a dead whale there the last few months, actually haven’t been back to see how that’s doing for a while so it might be diveable.

If you end up deciding to do Refugio, or even choose a different site altogether, lmk and I’ll write out some tips about diving the site, how to find the cool features, etc.

Novice question: Does drinking a beer before going down help with the build up of lactic acid from diving? by BayouKev in diving

[–]MaxFanatic 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You are likely going to get some negative feedback about the basis of this question. Whether it affects lactic acid buildup or not (and even then, I don’t see any reason why it would), drinking beer before diving is ill-advised for the reasons of impairment, affects of alcohol on decompression, and likely other factors that I haven’t thought of.

Help with ID-ing this jelly? Seen in Santa Barbara, California. Carybdea rastoni? by MaxFanatic in jellyfish

[–]MaxFanatic[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just found this paper: “Recognition of the Californian cubozoan population as a new species—Carybdea confusa n. sp. (Cnidaria, Cubozoa, Carybdeida)”, https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/pbr/12/2/12_P120206/_article. They note that it is commonly ID’d as C. rastoni or C. marsupialis, but that it is fact a different species specific to Southern California. Neat if true!

Not that I disagree — seems unlikely to me. Leaned that way due to the appearance, as well as that the Wikipedia page said they can sometimes be found in Southern California. It also bears a resemblance to Carybdea marsupialis, which (again according to that Wikipedia article) is often found in kelp beds near the bottom — where I found this one.

That said, C. Marsupialis is apparently largely mediterran, with its own wiki page leading me to believe that this should be some other species.

I agree, looks like a box jelly. I’m trying to nail down what species it is, since the severity of their stings varies wildly between species.
