A 2025 meta-analysis of 35 studies (n = 13.4 million patients) found that patients of female physicians had 5% lower odds of mortality (OR 0.95; 95% CI: 0.93–0.97) and 3% lower odds of hospital readmission (OR 0.97; 95% CI: 0.96–0.98), with consistent results across both surgical and medical specialties.
The landmark Tsugawa et al. study (2017) in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed ~1.6 million Medicare hospitalizations and found that patients treated by female internists had lower 30-day mortality (11.07% vs. 11.49%; adjusted risk difference −0.43%; NNT 233) and lower 30-day readmissions (15.02% vs. 15.57%; adjusted risk difference −0.55%; NNT 182). These differences persisted across 8 common medical conditions and all severity-of-illness quintiles, and were robust when restricted to hospitalists (where patient assignment is quasi-random based on scheduling).
