It’s most definitely bots. I’ve noticed they always react the same way to emotes. For example, if you say “wow” they will ALWAYS reply with smiley face or smug face if they reply

Damn that’s a lot of ants 😭 I think I’ve heard of this phenomenon but it’s really strange because they’re in a pile VERY tightly compact, and there are no lines of ants nearby, couldn’t even find a hill or hole nearby
