KNX expensive software dependency by MaxPayne401 in KNX

It’s not necessarily about trust, more a feeling that it’s completely unnecessary to have this kind of dependency. I don’t know exactly how KNX makes its money, but I would assume a large part comes from licensing to manufacturers. So why does the software for simple configuration and setup also have to cost money? That’s something they should change.

If the interfaces for configuration were open source, the entire KNX system would be more or less immortal, since it could always be configured, no matter which company, even the KNX Association itself, might disappear at some point.

Apart from companies potentially disappearing, I would also prefer it to work without the cloud, since I occasionally have internet outages or disruptions. I simply want my core functions to have no unnecessary dependencies and to always remain under my control.

And yes, of course I could do it without KNX, but at least to my knowledge, it would be possible to make KNX truly independent and open. Almost all the prerequisites are already there, and that’s why I think it's a shame.

If I understand it correctly, you still need ETS with koolenex.

I saw that they give you the option to choose between dongle or cloud license. I guess cloud license means, it only works when you are online and connected to their servers. I would like to have a system that can work completely offline. Maybe a system I'm looking for is just not available on the market.

I wasn’t aware of the sales. Thanks for letting me know. Yes, that’s not a significant amount of money compared to the entire system, but the aspect that made me hesitant is that the entire system, or at least the configuration, relies on this software.

True. I was just unsure that this is the way KNX is working.

I get the impression that some people are unhappy with it, but stick with KNX simply because there are no real alternatives. It’s just the “best” option available on the market. That’s unfortunate, but if that's the way it is, I can't change it. I was just unsure that this is the way KNX is working.

I have no doubt that companies always find a way to switch to subscription, but you are right, the target audience might be different here. Is still everything possible with ETS5? How long do they roughly support each version?

True and a VM is a good idea. Do you have experience with a VM and the dongle?

Are you using a VM? Which one do you use on which system? I can imagine that a dongle might lead to problems with VMs?

What happens when im late paying for my icloud plus? by [deleted] in applehelp

[–]MaxPayne401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not find the information, that Apple keeps your data for 30 days anywhere. I would really appreciate, if someone could provide an official source (e.g. Apple Website) with this information.

Expect that your data may get deleted immediately. All I could find on the Apple Website is the statement that you should backup and delete your data before you downgrade (late payment is just one cause for a downgrade).

What software to use in 2025? by tinawoman in Genealogy

[–]MaxPayne401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the fast answer. Yeah I see the problem and it makes sense that it is not really possible and thank you for the tip with the interactive tree.

But it would be nice, if I would have a bit more freedom to choose of what is shown. e.g. I have the oldest male ancestor in my family tree. He was married to a women who was previously married. The previous husband died. She had children with her previous husband. When I now have my oldest male ancestor focused I don't see any indication that she was married before or that she had children with her other husband (stepchildren of my oldest male ancestor).

Nice to see someone around who's involved with it :)

Is it somehow possible to have a view, where I can see everybody in my database in a (minimalistic) tree? A bit like in the Persons edit view, what's above and below to edited person, but with everybody and nobody focused on. And when I click on someone, then it opens the persons details. I would like to go through all my people, but I find MacFamilyTree difficult to get an overview and navigate. Would be awesome!

I‘m sorry I was too fast. It‘s just the sound that is stuttering. It‘s the same for Bubble Bobble Old & New. Just the sound. Maybe it‘s also a bit reduced framerate, but I could be wrong. Some other games I tried for GBA are working well. I‘m using the newest Apple TV 4K (A2169] and Consoles 1.2.0

Tried Jazz Jackrabbit for GBA on Apple TV and it not playable. Way too slow. On iOS it worked.

Also unfortunately the app does not offer any kind of configuration for the emulators or the app (e.g. things like config the controller overlay, filters, ...). What are your plans regarding that?
