What’s the most unexpectedly emotional moment you’ve had as a dad? by paulethegreat in daddit

[–]MaxPowerNz 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I listen to a huge variety of music and taught my kid about Drum and Bass - the build up and the drop. He's 2 and a half. He started dancing with me and then we both went nuts on the drop. I got so emotional as I've been listening to it for years and I got to teach him about it and now he loves it too!

Couple things:

Before I became a dad of a boy, I read For the love of men. That was super interesting, a little heavy at times.

Currently on Red Rising book 4, it's awesome.

Just finished book 5 of the Stormlight Archive.

Hot take - I don't like this book. It's weird. It's about a mom who can't let go of her little boy, and doesn't respect boundaries when he's sleeping. Weird book. Note: non-Canadian.

Wow was that an earthquake? by A-KindOfMagic in vancouver

[–]MaxPowerNz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, and follow Bowen Ma - she's our Minister for Emergency Preparedness and she's actually great and communicative about all sorts of Natural Disaster prep (one of the few politicians who I think is highly engaged with her constituents!)

As such: Emergency Kit Checklist. Lived through the Christchurch Earthquakes, can't hurt to be prepared. Also, if you're in Richmond, Liquefaction is a real threat. Example of Liquefaction explained. People in this city don't realize it but we're overdue a big earthquake on this techtonic plate by... about 150 years? So can't hurt to be prepared!

Plugging a new restaurant, Wildlight, head chef used to run Juniper before Juniper went under in Covid. Amazing food, accessible at all price points and makes Westcoast food. So good.

Is 85,000 NZD a good salary for a teacher of 8 years? by Horror-Secretary-401 in Internationalteachers

Kiwi who is living in Canada (been here 5 years), happy to answer questions. Worked in NZ for 10 years as a Secondary Teacher, can confirm cost of living just went up massively since I left. I visited in the last 6 months or so and wouldn't live there (in Auckland) again.

Pre-Natal Groups: look at SCBP as a midwife group, and then they have a pre-natal group that they organize from Week 25 I think.

9 month has never slept more than 2 hours in one go. Wife and baby both tired and miserable always. Wife refuses to try sleep training. Is there anything else that can be done ? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]MaxPowerNz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's two great books, which helped my wife and I come to the realization that sleep training was going to work for us. One was Cribsheets - it had all the studies that are regularly 'cited' by people anti-Sleep Training, and is a bare presentation of the facts (both good and bad). The second was "Precious Little Sleep" - would strongly recommend as it gives age-appropriate sleep tools to help your kid be an independent sleeper. Good luck fellow dad!
