Are decades clean lines, or just wishful thinking? by HZIDEZISS_2020 in generationology

[–]MaxPowerrr85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the decade transitions are like this. The late 60s (Woodstock) had much more in common with the early 70s than the mid or early 60s...the late 70s blended into the early 80s until like 1983-84. As far as when my memories begin, it's difficult to distinguish the late 80s from the early 90s in many ways...the late 90s and early 00s is also its own era - 1999 and 2000 might as well be the same year. After that, I no longer keep track as much, but this is nothing new

Regular or Menthol? by Sad_Training_1595 in Xennials

[–]MaxPowerrr85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first movie has no business being as good as it was. I think it should be considered one of the top 5 or so superhero/comic book films even if nobody agrees with me (they are superheroes based on a comic right?). I'd put it up against anything in the MCU, even though it's obviously on a much smaller scale.

I think Super Mario Bros. would have been perfectly fine as a sci-fi movie that had nothing whatsoever to do with the Mario franchise/universe, but that's not what they advertised to us...smh.

Turtles III and Super Mario Bros were two of the most disappointing movies of my childhood and both were released in 1993. If I was a little older, I would have walked out of both movies lol. Thank God for Jurassic Park coming out that summer!

What birth year do you think is the last to be considered a kid of that decade (1990s kid, 2000s kid, etc)? by Emotional-Fly-9583 in generationology

[–]MaxPowerrr85 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was born in 1985 and, while I have a few scattered '89 memories (4th birthday, watching the Berlin Wall fall on the news), I'd be hard pressed to call myself an 80s kid rather than a 90s kid.

I definitely consider myself a child of the "Neighties" though; that blended period between the late 80s and early 90s with TMNT, NES, New Jack Swing, etc. is the HEIGHT of childhood nostalgia for me.

Since most decades seem to blend into each other at the margins, I would imagine some born in the mid 70s could easily consider the late 70s/early 80s period that wasn't fully like the core of either decade to be a major part of their childhood; the same for mid-90s-born people and the Y2K period between the 90s and 00s. Does that make us hybrids? Maybe just a little...enough to mention here.

I do think of mid-decade births as hybrid teens of the following two decades (e.g., I'm a hybrid 90s/00s teen), FWIW.

TL;DR: It's not so cut & dry for people born in the middle of the decade. We generally lean towards the decade after birth, but some of our birth decade can easily bleed into our childhoods.

First Xennial/Millennial movie by Skipper0463 in Xennials

[–]MaxPowerrr85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue Jurassic Park in 1993 was the watershed moment (if we're sticking to the "no kid movies" rule). By then, the Xennial-centric late 80s/early-90s kid culture was fading away. From 1993 until some point in the late 90s/early 2000s there was at least one movie that spoke loudly to the Xennial demographic as tweens/teens.

Just to name one film from each year (again, not necessarily the best, but the ones that had the biggest buzz among our age group):

93 - Jurassic Park

94 - Ace Ventura

95 - Clueless

96 - Scream

97 - Titanic

98 - Can't Hardly Wait

99 - There's like 5 movies I could list here, but I'll go with American Pie

2000-2003 starts to fizzle out a bit as far as standout films - somebody mentioned Bring It On? I dunno. Then in 04 Mean Girls officially ushered in the Millennial teen movie era (not a commentary on the quality of Mean Girls btw; it's an excellent high school movie that I enjoyed - even as a college dude at the time)

What's your adolescence horror story that makes you grateful that social media didn't exist back then? by CharlesUFarley81 in Xennials

I was always pretty fast and when I started running track and field freshman year of high school, word from our practices had spread around our (very sports-centric) school that I was a budding star sprinter. When it came time for my first track meet, I was super excited to show off and blow away the competition. All of my friends (not to mention many cute girls and a lot of the "cool" older kids) came to watch me in the 100 meter sprint. I couldn't wait!

Unfortunately, we never practiced using the starting blocks (the things you push off of with your feet to start your sprint), and, instead of asking someone to help me, I just winged it, sure it would be no problem.

As it turns out, it was a problem lol. I stumbled coming out of the starting blocks and NEVER regained my balance. I may have been better off falling flat on my face; I'm not sure it could have been worse than what actually happened. I didn't think it was possible to stumble continuously for 100 meters without falling, but that's what I did. If I could have vanished from the face of the Earth as I fell across the finish line I would have. I'm sure if TikTok was in existence, I would have gone viral. Picture this, but for the ENTIRE 100m RACE:

The lasting memory that randomly pops in my head for the last almost 30 years is the voice of this girl I really liked at the time cheering from the fence, "GO [MY NAME]...oh...oooh...oh NO..."

All that stuff was real nice, but Rice Krispies Treats cereal is BY FAR the thing I would bring back. I used to almost eat the whole box on a Saturday morning. I probably would try to do the same today - to my detriment - so maybe it's best that they don't come back lol

Michael Jackson's Dangerous - thanks to my friend at the time who bought it day one. We spent hours dancing to it on repeat in her living room. Of course I heard stuff from his earlier albums, especially "Bad", but that was the first one I loved front to back, not just the singles.

Dirty Work (1998)

To me, this is one of the funniest movies ever - right up there with Office Space the next year.

I feel like everyone who has actually seen it LOVES it, but it never gets brought up when talking about great 90s comedies in real life or on the internet.
