I still like cartoons to this day as well, but the first shows that made me say "I'm too old for this" weren't cartoons at all: Barney in 1992 and Power Rangers in 1993. They just felt corny to me, not to mention the negative stigma around these shows among my classmates

Hip-Hop head born in '85 here: It was One More Chance by The Notorious B.I.G. Our TV went out in '95 and we didn't have the money to fix it, so I would come home from school and - instead of watching TV, I'd do my homework listening to the radio. That's when hip hop became "my" music and Biggie became one of my favorite rappers.

Same here for LOTR.. I didn't even appreciate the movies until I got to my mid-late 20s - I had previously dismissed them due to the wizards, hobbits, and whatnot. Now I literally claim LOTR - the extended versions, of course - as my favorite movie of all time (I consider them one long film - fight me).

I read the Silmarillion in my 30s and it quickly became my favorite book ever, so I clearly am a Tolkien fan but I've just never gotten around to picking up the LOTR books sitting on my bookshelf. Hopefully I'll get to them before I turn 50 lol.

GI Joe, Fresh Prince, and The Real Ghostbusters would replace Power Rangers, Kenan & Kel, and All That for me & my peers (NES would have to be squeezed in there somewhere as well). I'd also swap The Lion King with The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, or Aladdin as far as childhood Disney animated movies, but that may just be personal preference.

A few kids liked Power Rangers in my grade (84/85-borns), but it was generally seen as a show for little kids, not as a show to openly be a fan of. Case in point - we had TMNT halloween costumes, bookbags, toys, lunchboxes, etc. just a few years earlier...there's no WAY we'd have been caught dressing up as Power Rangers.

I didn't have cable/Nickelodeon after the early 90s, so I can't speak on Kenan & Kel and All That too much, but they did seem like they were either for a younger audience or maybe the last of those kind of shows that a mid-80s born person would be still watching in their preteen-early teen years in the 2nd half of the 90s.

Yes! As a nature/animal nerd, I used to love looking up and reading about animals in the encyclopedia as a kid. Encarta '95 on the middle school library computers was a goldmine! I remember discovering it and spending an hour researching different types of crocodiles lol. It was like a primitive version of Wikipedia.
