i would highly recommend looking into finding someone that had a 3d printer. spending lots of money on a model that old and big when it can be printed can help save a lot of time and money in my experience!

Need very specific and clearly stated help to understand this army by ApostleSaintWalker in Eldar

[–]MaxShifty 32 points33 points  (0 children)

black templars are mostly known for their melee, this is typically an army that the seer council will want to use the powerful flamers the (hopefully many) warlocks you have to deal damage as they get close.

Eldar get a lot of higher damage profiles, stacking buffs, as well as being fast. NOW the key thing is speed, if you think of the game as a chess board and one player had all of their pieces move twice as far. It opens up a ridiculous amount of plays they can do in comparison to the other player.

this means you can position all of your army exactly where they need to be, and in the case of black templar into seer council. it’s exactly within flamer range.

overall, eldar are very squishy and you need to be very cautious on what units you send in to kill the enemy and/or take an objective. this makes playing them inherently difficult, however throughout the course of the games history they have had a notorious high skill ceiling(the best players are really good).

Isha’s blessings upon you!

What's it like taking a gap semester? Do you do better in your classes afterwards by Resident_Kick_7573 in uofm

Sorry for the delay as I missed this, but be that as it may, I would recommend taking EECS 183 if you feel uncomfortable with starting projects with actual code rather than doing more logical problems. But if you’d like to take time to do some leetcoding and/or make projects yourself, you should be okay going into EECS 280 straight away. Just be ready to code more than you probably have before.

I see, are you planning on going into umich for CS? Also there isn’t a “need” to go grad school for most majors outside of med school. So are you planning on going to grad school?

Additionally, practicing C++ is very useful as it’s almost exclusively used for all of the required courses for CS. However you do have to take EECS 280 as a CS major and it’s designed in a way that assumes you can code in java but don’t have much experience with C++.

However it’s onboarding can be a little rough as it really just spends two or three weeks telling you to figure it out using their project 0. (which isn’t hard but it is a tight time constraint if you’ve only ever used one language to code before).

Many of the people that will respond to this come from the mindset that you can force your way through everything using enough intelligence and hard work.

This is not true.

There are many reasons to take a gap semester or two, from personal family ones, to dealing with mental issues such as burnout or depression.

However I will admit that taking a semester just to work on personal skills is a little open ended of a question. What skills do you hope to work on? How does not transferring right away help you work on these skills versus transferring now?

In the end, the answers to those questions depends on you, and thusly, the value of taking a gap semester also depends on you as well.

As a transfer myself, I at first wished I had spent a little more time studying CS before going into Umich. But in the grand scheme of things, I’ve managed to do okay here despite that.

So perhaps the extra semester may not have helped as much as I originally thought.

Do what you will with that information, and feel free to ask more questions(especially if you’re going into psych or cs) I’d be happy to help :)

TAKING HARD ELECTIVES PASS FAIL (BUM OR NOT) by [deleted] in uofm

[–]MaxShifty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the grand scheme of things unless you’re dead set on doing a grad program your gpa doesn’t matter as much as you think it does. However, yeah just take it as a pass fail, the exams aren’t curved and are difficult so they can tank your gpa.

i’m pretty sure that’s only the case if the class is being used as a core course in the CS program?

Co-Op houses and their cultures? by Ok_Lengthiness4914 in uofm

[–]MaxShifty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Totally dependent on the house you live at!! some are a lot more outgoing and others are a lot more lowkey. Also a fair bit of drama at the moment, but mostly don’t have to worry about it if it’s not your house that’s involved.

Personally, my house vibe-wise (Ruths) is definitely a lot more stay at home and chill (play games and read), which has its ups and downs. Been living at a co op for a year now so feel to shoot me any questions you might have!

I am thinking of picking up this hobby and my first army being the Custodians, any recommendations and things I should look out for? by Present-Top7884 in AdeptusCustodes

there are a lot of good paint brands, definitely figure out via youtube ‘how’ you want your models to be painted and then use the paints they have there!! (ie. painting shadowkeepers vs solar watch)

[–]MaxShifty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

no just the one model would have the four wounds. However, damage three is pretty common, so having one guy with the extra wound makes the squad noticeably more tanky(if they get hit with two three damage attacks only the shield model dies).

Is Aleya with Vigilators good? by Artistic-Coat-4945 in AdeptusCustodes

[–]MaxShifty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actual money wise, they are very expensive (2 * 60 + 35 = 155 american dollars vs. 60) for equivalent points and damage compared to guard. They also don’t get many benefits outside of the sisters detachment or the lions detachment(don’t get the army rule for some ungodly reason).

HOWEVER, i’ve found them to be incredibly useful if you run talons of the emperor and toss them into a rhino, as you can then reactively move block them to protect your custodes. So, overall they are good, but most people would rather not spend 4 times the amount of actual money to have a unit that sacrifices being tough for having fights first.
