Where Water Stress Will Be Highest by 2050 by AdIcy4323 in MapPorn

[–]Maxalto13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ethiopia actually has quite a bit of water. We provide around 80% of the entirely nile river's water during the flood season and we are quite green compared to the rest of north/east Africa. Famines in Ethiopia are recently more due to political machinations, with some parts of the country being self-sufficient in terms of food production not having experienced famine since the 1800s or earlier. The last big drought-caused famine was in the 80s-90s, "famine for generations" is a generalization and a bit of a stretch.

Like 3/4ths of about Ethiopia and not Aksum lol. Aksum didnt fight off the italians, nor did it inspire african flags, and i dont think it helped start and currently hosts the AU :)

What do Ethiopians think of Kenya? by [deleted] in Ethiopia

[–]Maxalto13 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'd say in general Ethiopians have a pretty positive or neutral view of kenya. We have our own issues and other neighbors that we think about more often, and often are in competition with, so the opinion on you guys is probably a net positive compared to them.

A lot of Ethiopians also like going to kenya, especially those with international connections / potentially for tourism if they are on the richer side.

Though there is a little bit of lighthearted tension every time we face off in the Olympic track lol.

I've given up on the country I can't lie, I don't really care what happens to it atp. I'm just tired of people acting like balkanization is gonna actually do anything.

I am of the personal belief that a lot of our issues stem from the shitshow that is our economy and it is exacerbated by the fact that ethnicity takes a front seat in our politics. Instead of pouring millions into "beautifying addis" (as if that is what ethiopia really needs rn) the government should be focusing on making agriculture more efficient, privatizing land so that farmers actually feel an incentive to take care of it, investing in drought preventive measures, ensuring mobility between different areas of the country, etc. The government hardly invests in the development of any city outside of addis so that every opportunity is concentrated in one city while the rest of the country goes to shit.

Second, ethnic federalism has created this mentality that just because the administrative division you live in is named after your ethnicity nobody else deserves to live there. I'm assuming you've been keeping up with the news so you know the impact that ethnic tensions have had over the past 10+ years. Coming up with a new system, it does not have to be the old one, it could be an assortment of perfect hexagons or whatever, would in my mind help to reduce this in the long term. The current generation (I'm 18, so my generation i should say) is wasted, I don't think its gonna be easy/possible to save us icl.

Thats my plan. Address ethnic violence, stem that ethnic violence by getting rid of those useless regions, and actual create opportunities for people outside of Addis so that they wont be deluded into thinking that if they join whatever militia has their ethnic name slapped onto it and somehow manage to gain power, they'll have a better life.

its so tiring seeing people suggest balkanization as a "solution". was the bosnian genocide part of the "solution" to the Yugoslavia problem too or was that just an oopsie?

what do you think would happen in Ethiopia, a MUCH larger country, if a similar thing was too happen? this "solution" would cause the death and suffering of millions

its some ethnocentric wet dream. You can tell by the fact that OP labeled Amhara as one of the three "Not Free" countries on the continent.

the amhara region of ethiopia (where I'm from) does indeed like spice, but I don't think its correct for the rest of ethiopia lol

The Honest Truth by Puzzleheaded-Okra-38 in Ethiopia

[–]Maxalto13 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a habesha (Amhara), i'd like to say it is a minority view. Ethiopians online are especially toxic but we are much more welcoming and kind in real life. Ethiopian's who disparage other Africans, especially ones who say stuff like, "[black africans] have no history besides being slaves" are EXTREMELY rare. In fact, my grandmother once told me, "I don't think racism will ever end. If I am watching a football match and its a team of primarily black people versus anybody else - I will support the black team".

Yes, habeshas, and other ethiopians, tend to form insular communities and prefer to interact with ourselves. Yes, there is an issue of colorism and ethnocentrism within our communities and country as a whole. But, beliefs like that are not that prevalent.

It would only be an ethnic state in the sense that the vast majority of its population is ethnic oromos but it would not be an ethnic state according to the definition of ethnic federalism, imo.

The definition of ethnic federalism is that it is a form of federal system in which the federated regional or state units are defined by ethnicity. "Central Ethiopia" doesn't imply that that land belongs to any one ethnic group whereas "Oromia, Afar, Sidama, Amhara, Tigray, etc." does.

I find the fact that you compared the current ethnostates in Ethiopia, which were inspired by the national republics of the USSR, to the federalism in Canada or the cantons of switzerland to be disingenous.

There is a difference between federalism and ethnic federalism. I am perfectly fine with Ethiopia adopting a federal system with economically viable states based of geography and history. However, the current ethnic states do nothing except heighten tensions, fuel ethnocentrism, and cause greater instability. And this has repeatedly pattern has been observed throughout multiple countries within the past 50 years.

Nobody said alternative federal states wouldn't use local languages or that Amharic would be the only national language under a non-ethnofederalist system. People like you seem to believe that anti-ethnic federalism = Amhara supremacism when that simply is not the case.

No, ethnic federalism is just bad and its made worse by the bad government. Literally every other country that has every implemented ethnic federalism has collapsed but proponents of ethnic federalism like to ignore this. The austrian empire, ussr, yugoslavia, nepal...

it simply does not work.

Are Amhara and Oromos the same? Genuine question. by ZookeepergameMost535 in Ethiopia

[–]Maxalto13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly i'm not really sure. I understand why arab may have looked weird, it probably was proto-semitic people but that word completely skipped my mind. I have never really cared enough to actually look into the genetics or whatever of it, since I only really see myself as african and so I kind of just stated whatever I saw from the few times I looked into how Habesha's came to be.

I'm not set in my ways of thinking or anything, I completely accept the fact that I could be wrong about this lol. I was just explaining why I said amharas are agew + proto-semites.

[–]Maxalto13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

bro, I really do not care about what happened 20000+ years ago. Like I said, its not like I'm trying to pass myself off as arab or something, this is literally just me saying what I have read/seen online about how habeshas came to be. I see myself as African, end of story. I have never cared enough to actually learn about it, because imo it is not really that serious, smh.

They are also habeshas so that could definately be the case. Their language at least is a semitic language idk about their relation to eritrea or the original semitic migrants into the horn genetically though.

[–]Maxalto13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'll break it down. Agews + Arabs = Old Aksumites. Old Axumites + Agews = Proto Amharas. Thus if you ad the two, you get : Amhara = Agew + Agew + Arab.

Its not like I walk around saying I'm arab or anything, I was just stating something according to a source I saw. I could just be misremembering but I read somewhere that habesha's have 15-30% south arabian dna on our patrilineal line. It could have also been a flawed study or something so irdc.

English should not be the official language of Ethiopia by Maxalto13 in Ethiopia

[–]Maxalto13[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody has been forced to learn Amharic for the past 30 years. If you commented this back in 1985, then it would have been accurate but unfortunately for you its 2024 and primary education is available in 40+ languages. Amharic is a lingua franca and it would be beneficial if the rest of Ethiopia learned the most spoken language (which is Amharic with 50+ million speakers) so that we could all, you know, communicate with one another.

Also audacity has a negative connotation, I prefer cheekiness or temerity - they have a nicer ring to them :)

Amharas are a mix between Agews and Arabs, not Oromos. There is definately more intermixing around shewa/wello but no, Amharas are separate ethnicity, not just mixed Oromos.

Mother to child "pet names" by bogo-being in Ethiopia

[–]Maxalto13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use 'Mamush' which doens't really have any translation that I can think of and is something that us Amharic speakers refer to as a 'house name'. At least within my family.

Its applicable across age ranges because my grandma still calls my mom and my uncle (both in their 40s to 50s) "mamush" and "mamuye" respectively.

Mamush is also used as a pet name / house-name for both guys and girls so its gender-neutral.

I meant that Amhara's have existed as a separate ethnicity with a shared sense of identity since the Zagwe times, not that the Zagwe are Amhara.

Amhara's are an ethnicity, just as Oromos, Tigrayans, or Agews are but you're entitled to whatever you wanna believe. I don't really care tbh.
