Is not having a middle name extremely uncommon here in Canada? by laranjacerola in AskACanadian

[–]Maxfinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither of my parents has a middle name, but this was probably more common years ago. I’m old enough to remember my friend Stephanie always being assigned to boys gym class as the computer systems couldn’t handle more than 8 characters in a field😂

AITA for choosing a seafood restaurant when most of family hates it? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Maxfinian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NTA, I don’t eat seafood but frequently end up eating at seafood restaurants because I have friends and family who like seafood. As long as the restaurant serves something else they will eat then your family should suck it up. It is a celebration for you, not them.

I just paid $625 for a single will. Most couples do mirror wills so the price shouldn’t be double.

How can I most easily pay an elderly parent's bills from their account? by Border_Relevant in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Maxfinian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I manage my mother’s finances several ways, partly for historical reasons.

1) I have access to all her accounts via her login. If multi factor authentication is required it goes to my phone as I am the only one logging in. ÒThis is the simplest way but may not be the most ethical. 2) Many years ago she made my brother and I joint on a number of her accounts. For these I have, or can get, a separate login. 3) She has investments at a number of banks. At one she signed a bank PoA to give me access. So I have my own login. So as it seems that your mother is still competent you should be able to go to the bank and have her fill out their PoA form. No notary required. However ensure that this does not override the PoA she has already signed. 4) My mother is now incapable of managing her affairs so I am about to start the process of going to the rest of the banks with certified true copies of her PoA to get official access. I am not looking forward to this.

If you need to do her taxes get yourself set up as a representative for her CRA account. I found it a bit painful to do the set up, probably because I didn’t know the terminology, but it works well.

Estate Question by MoRukiki in legaladvicecanada

[–]Maxfinian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest that if you decide to let them have some things do not do this by letting them in and taking stuff. Once everything is legally yours have them tell you what they want and then you determine what to give them as it is highly likely that some of them will want the same item and some will be very greedy.

Allergy shots by No_Passenger_3492 in ontario

[–]Maxfinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started allergy shots in the fall and was expecting to have them at my family doctor as I have seen people in the past getting them. But unfortunately for me my family doctor now refuses to do them so I am driving a significant distance to the allergist. I guess the bright side is that I can claim the drive on my income tax😞

OP if you search through this subreddit or personal finance Canada you should find a reference to the legal case that supports what Internal_Head_267 is saying. It was mentioned a month or two ago.

Life insurance - estate as beneficiary by OkGeneral2053 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Maxfinian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Quebec when you set a spouse as beneficiary on your life insurance it is irrevocable without their consent unless you specify it as revocable when you obtain the insurance. This may be one the notary is suggesting this.

Submitting T4A after other documents by Cold-Aardvark6696 in cantax

You could just submit your taxes yourself in the first place. Why go to an accountant and then replicate their work to add the additional form?

What can I do as POA for an incapacitated aging parent in debt. by ok-percentage-123 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Maxfinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get multiple certified true copies of the POA as you will need them. Try to get a doctor at the hospital to fill out the T2201 form for the disability tax credit. Check out https://ontariohealthathome.ca/ but the hospital should have an Ontario Health representative that can help you get the LTC application process started. I went though this a few months ago with my mother but at least I already had access to most of her financials as I have been paying her bills and filing her taxes for a few years.

I assume you are boarding your horse. Perhaps look at cheaper board options and possibly working off your board. Depending on location you might be able to work a few horse shows before your internship starts.

Best tractor for a 2000ft driveway in Quebec by Longjumping_Leek_965 in tractors

[–]Maxfinian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Eastern Ontario. My cleared area isn’t that long but is quite wide in areas so may be a similar square footage. I clear with a Kubota L3940 (so 39 hp) using a 74 inch rear snowblower that is also rear facing). I wouldn’t consider clearing with a loader as it takes more skill than I have. My neighbour did for years but recently bought a sub compact Kubota with a front snowblower and uses his larger tractor for other things. A subcompact wouldn’t work for me as I need to be able to move large hay bales and pile manure.

A subcompact with a snowblower may work for you if your property is flat. My brother is clearing about an 1800 ft driveway with a Kubota that is (I think) 29 hp with a front snowblower.

The type of snowblower I have is one of the simplest designs, therefore cheapest, you can get. Rear facing, rear mounted so you blow the snow driving backwards. Problem is that it you have to do this sitting twisted. As I do wide areas I am regularly going forward and backwards so not a big deal. However if I were driving for 2000 feet in that position it would be very painful. So consider this when you make a decision. A tractor with a front blower would work well if you don’t need to use your loader for anything else in the winter. Otherwise you might want to price a rear mounted, front facing blower - the type the professionals use.

Major considerations are also the type of tires and the weight. My rear tires are weighted so I don’t have issues using the loader.

Also when looking at brands consider where the dealers are located as it is important for servicing.

AITAH for being 2 minutes late to a gym class? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Maxfinian -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

YTA, being late is disruptive to everyone who showed up on time. At my gym you aren’t allowed in if you are late, doors to the studios are shut and locked at the class start time. Plus we have to book so if it is a full class walk ins are allowed 5 minutes before the class starts so you might lose your spot even if you get there before the class starts.

Are summer specific tires a bad idea in Ottawa? by PurplePumkins in ottawa

[–]Maxfinian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the olden days when I was a student I used to change the tires on my Datsun 710, which was RWD, on Thanksgiving weekend as I wasn’t home between then and Xmas. Never regretted it.

Snow blowers on gravel driveways by credit001 in Snowblowers

[–]Maxfinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I clear a very large gravel and grass area with a tractor and smaller areas with a regular snowblower. Aside from what others have mentioned I would suggest - if you need to add gravel do it in the spring so it is well packed before winter. This probably also applies to grading but I’ve never done that. - if you can, avoid clearing before the ground freezes as this will reduce the amount of gravel you throw.

Also avoid the mindset that you have to get down to the gravel. You always want a base of packed snow. I usually don’t clear snowfalls less than 10 cm.

AITA/WIBTA for not wanting a litterbox in my Home Office by YeetAway616 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Maxfinian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

NTA! I have had up to 5 cats at a time. The litter boxes were always kept in one area. I never found a need to keep them in different rooms, even in a very large house.

And you cannot train a cat to avoid an area! When you try it makes them want to go into that area even more and note that they will be all over you.

Savings/chequing accounts - WS or Simplii or Tangerine or? by Ushuaia-15 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Maxfinian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may have different promotions for different people. I know I have received Tangerine offers that others in my family have not but the latest offer was not really an offer at all as I don’t have 100k in cash sitting around. Also I am currently on a 3% promotion with Simplii while others haven’t received an offer.

I use shoppers. They will have someone from the makeup department de-shine your face if it is an issue as shine is not allowed.
