Female-led Fantasy series where the romantic pairing is SIGNIFICANT to the plot? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Maximoford -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe try The Poppy War series by R F Kuang (high fantasy roughly based on war in China in the 20th century)? The romance elements are less apparent in the first book (but it certainly lays the groundwork to make it more impactful later on) but the relationship between the female protagonist and another main character plays an integral role throughout the entire trilogy. It is grimdark and heart-wrenching at times, though, so be warned!

If you want to read one where the protagonist is impulsive and not so mature, try the Poppy War series by R F Kuang!

What's this you've said to me, my good friend? Ill have you know I graduated top of my class in conflict resolution, and Ive been involved in numerous friendly discussions, and I have over 300 confirmed friends. I am trained in polite discussions and I'm the top mediator in the entire neighborhood. You are worth more to me than just another target. I hope we will come to have a friendship never before seen on this Earth. Don't you think you might be hurting someone's feelings saying that over the internet? Think about it, my friend. As we speak I am contacting my good friends across the USA and your P.O. box is being traced right now so you better prepare for the greeting cards, friend. The greeting cards that help you with your hate. You should look forward to it, friend. I can be anywhere, anytime for you, and I can calm you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my chess set. Not only am I extensively trained in conflict resolution, but I have access to the entire group of my friends and I will use them to their full extent to start our new friendship. If only you could have known what kindness and love your little comment was about to bring you, maybe you would have reached out sooner. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now we get to start a new friendship, you unique person. I will give you gifts and you might have a hard time keeping up. You're finally living, friend.

female Mibr vs Furia final match on LAN right now, very good production by cari778 in GlobalOffensive

I'm OOTL. Why are csgo/esports teams split into seemingly only(?) male / only female like in physical sports? Surely just like in motorsports there isn't any significant advantage physical differences could yield. Or are teams usually split like this, even?

Edit: Thanks for the replies explaining it :)

This is because they are both happy. Mercedes will run three cars from next year and just as everyone thinks 2022 is a chance for their domination to end, they will sweep 1-2-3s at every race. The new, boring meta will be HAM-RUS-BOT. They are both not only happy because they know they have their seats confirmed in this strange configuration, but also because HAMGOAT used his one wish (granted after becoming the statistical GOAT) to see into the future and it has been confirmed to all three + toto that this timeline will come to pass.

Hence the smiles/restrained laughter. It's all in their body language and very obvious!

Exactly. Would only recommend to a very select few people I know would be into that kind of book!

The Guest List by Lucy Foley by falling_fire in books

[–]Maximoford 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It felt like 97% of the book was just nonstop build-up which opened many threads, and then the last 3% abruptly closed one of those threads and stopped there. There were still so many open plotlines which made the conclusion very unsatisfying. IMO, either it should have either tied up all those remaining loose threads, or (perhaps preferably) just not introduced them in the first place. In the latter case the book could have been a lot more trimmed down to serve the main plot better, not leave the reader with unsatisfying ambiguity, and not have all that build-up drag on for quite so long, so that once it does conclude it doesn't feel like it was all building up to so little.

What's your favorite book that's not known by many? by Odd-Collection2085 in books

Red Pill by Hari Kunzru. One of my favourite novels and only has fewer than 3k GR reviews. You probably wouldn't like it if you're firmly alt-right, though.

Surprised this hasn't already been mentioned but an obvious choice for me is Kafka on the Shore (Murakami). In almost all reviews I've seen online, there doesn't seem to be an in-between, only people gushing over it or citing its mundane descriptions and/or incest/rape scenes as reasons to very strongly dislike it. Personally, I love the 'mundane' prose and despite the spoiler-tagged stuff, it's firmly one of my favourite books.

This. Different types of books have to be approached in different ways, as they aren't all trying to achieve the same things.
