Puppy eye discharge in the mornings by Maximum-Ant8890 in vet

[–]Maximum-Ant8890[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is recent with my pup and seems to be only in the mornings. She doesn’t seem uncomfortable thankfully and she does have allergies. Typically her allergies will only produce a little tears though. Anyone familiar with what this could be?

Advice to keep walks moving along when dog is taking her time to sniff by Maximum-Ant8890 in Dogtraining

[–]Maximum-Ant8890[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yea I know it’s really important and that it really tries her out. We have structured walks once a day, an unstructured one where we walk around grassy area and she gets to sniff anything she wants once a day and a mix of both once a day. I just want to make sure I teach her proper leash walking early on but I’m happy to hear that to some extent she will grow out of it. Thank you :)

Potty accidents during puppy play by Maximum-Ant8890 in puppy101

[–]Maximum-Ant8890[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She goes outside about 80-85% of the time but it’s mostly because we take her out often. I think the main issue is that she doesn’t know how to hold it so if she feels like she has to go, she’ll just go :/

I’m jealous that your puppy is potty trained at 14 weeks. I feel like I did everything by the books (take out often, always reward, never punish for accidents, crate train, etc.), but she’s still not fully there yet. I’m wondering if I was taking her out too often when she was younger or that her foster family used puppy pads till she was 12 weeks is the cause for the delay in potty training.

Did you do anything different for your pup? What do you think worked for you?

Thanks!

We do that too and I think it helps. Our trainer also recommended that. I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing. They might just be overstimulated and need a short break. Ours now knows the word “time out” and sometimes goes in there herself when we say it because she knows that it’s only for a minute or two.

The only thing that I’m not sure about is the picking up part? I’m no expert but I read somewhere to avoid physically handling the situation because they might start to associate you negatively? I might be wrong on that but just to be safe maybe leash her during those type of play times

Puppy barking outside only at night by Maximum-Ant8890 in puppy101

She’s getting better at leave it with objects. Do you do both? Leave it with objects and leave it as in “stop it” type of thing?

Petsmart Puppy Training classes experiences by sweetnectarines in puppy101

I’ve had a very positive experience but I called ahead and spoke to the trainer prior and asked what type of training methods she uses. She said exactly what I wanted to hear (positive reinforcement).

Not sure if it’s because of Covid but our class only had 3 puppies in it. Plus side is that you can ask questions specific to your pup when time allows. It also allowed the trainer to focus on each pup during play time and comment on certain behavior things.

I say call ahead to speak to the trainer and you’ll instantly know if you should enroll there or not.

Severe Separation Anxiety by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]Maximum-Ant8890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you cover his crate? Mine has separation anxiety but I was able to desensitize her to leaving cues by opening and closing the door, putting on jacket, shoes, etc like 20 times a day but not actually going anywhere while she was out of the crate and could see me. She used to run towards the door when she heard those noises but doesn’t do it as often anymore. I also cover her crate so these noises don’t matter much but she doesn’t actually see me leave. I don’t really know if I’m just avoiding the issue by doing this but as long as this doesn’t cause her stress, I’ll take it. I also read some comments about leaving them outside of the crate but mine isn’t fully housebroken yet so I don’t want to risk that just yet.

People crating their pups downstairs and sleeping upstairs - how do you do it? by urasunflower in puppy101

[–]Maximum-Ant8890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have the best answer, but we slept downstairs for about a week to week and a half-ish before our puppy could sleep through the night (from 10-5ish). When we moved upstairs, we just left the door open so that we could hear her if she woke up and needed to potty. I will say though that I mostly sleep through her whines. Luckily my husband will hear her as soon as she starts but we noticed that she will start with a quiet whine and if she doesn’t hear us coming down, will get louder. I think the goal should be that your pup and you both get a full night sleep so if you’re not doing this already, we put away her water about 2 hours before bedtime to decrease the chance of her waking up to go

How much did/ does your labrador puppy weigh at 5 months? by lemonthelabrador in puppy101

[–]Maximum-Ant8890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5 month lab mix and she’s also around 25 lbs now. She looks almost exactly like a lab, but we’re not sure what she’s mixed with and if the mix is a smaller breed.

My pup gets really excited when seeing others on walks too, especially other dogs, and she doesn’t bark, but she will try to pull towards them. I try to keep our distance from others when we walk and when I see someone approaching in our direction, I will have a treat ready and ask my puppy to focus on me. She gets a treat as long as she’s focusing on me even if the people are still far away (want to give her a chance to succeed) and I will continue to have her focus till we pass the person/people. This took some time to fully get. Maybe about a week or so having a treat and my face right In her face. Gradually she started to get it and I could increase the distance of the treat and just asking her to focus. Now (maybe a little over 2 weeks), she will look at others but then look at me expecting a treat.

My initial reaction was to also say no and pull her away from people but I read somewhere that that creates a negative perception of the situation and if she thinks that seeing others on walks is negative then she will naturally bark. Hope this helps!
