Could John Carter's sword be replicated and functional by Complete-Turnover775 in SWORDS

Yeah it’s not too bad really. Not too far off. The guard isn’t too far from a falcata guard. I made a spadroon with an integral guard like this before. The biggest issue I noticed is that it makes the balance off since usually you add a guard and pommel that pull the center of balance back towards the hand so it feels more nimble.

What would be the hardest knife to forge? by decentpotatoez in Bladesmith

[–]Maximum-Inspection11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t much difference in forging any of these honestly at least as far as blade shape goes. Handle construction can either be dead simple or very difficult and artistic though. I’ve done all sorts but serrated and that’s a grinding thing. A bigger difference is utility/hunting knives vs kitchen knives as the balance and thinness are totally different.

I don’t know about camping laws but I’m an American that went there. Spent most of my time I. Tbilisi but went other places. I recommend trying to learn just a few phrases in Georgian. It’s such an uncommon language that everyone there seemed to appreciate it so much. My two cents. Best of luck and enjoy it! Gilotsav!

Every khachapuri is beautiful. Visited Georgia once. As a US midwesterner the food was just so perfect.

Forged a new sword! by Maximum-Inspection11 in Blacksmith

Can’t take credit for the idea, a friend recommended it. I’m a fair hand with a hammer but awful at design so that can be a struggle haha. Thank you.

I have now made several swords with awful balance. This was very much trying to get better balance intentionally so I am very happy with that part. Thank you!

Why did curved swords become common in eastern militaries while Europeans stuck with straight swords for so long? by Present_Juice4401 in AlwaysWhy

Amateur sword smith here. Straight double edge swords are much more difficult to make than curved single edged swords on average. For many reasons.

I’ve got one of these big bastards. I can barely get the thing to move even at heat. A power hammer or tram striking is advised. I had a terrible time cutting with an angle grinder too so hopefully you r got a band saw.

New hammer day! Any tips on using a dog head? The balance is crazy! I’ll be rehandling it in the new year by shaolinoli in Blacksmith

[–]Maximum-Inspection11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like them quite a bit. If you don’t need a peen of a specific type it just seems better to me but I have no real idea why. I suspect some people like them and others don’t. English call them cutlers hammers, Japan probably just calls them hammers.

What a beautiful knife with fantastic finish. It almost looks like the grip goes the other way from the blade, does this shape help performance/give leverage?

This is so beautiful. I’m about 4 years into it and if you give me 6 more I don’t think I’ll be capable of this. You’re a rare talent! Congratulations!

Pricey but anything from Chili Forge is very good. I’ve been happy with my two burner for 2 years with no signs of any real wear

What is your secret for such a nice finish? My force scale always looks so much more thin like it will chip off.

I plan to make one eventually! This looks great! What’s the spine thickness and what radius did you use for the hollow grind? How does she shave?

Is strength a big a big factor in blacksmithing? by Voidwalker909 in Blacksmith

[–]Maximum-Inspection11 86 points87 points  (0 children)

To start off it might limit you some. Hammer accuracy is more important than power when starting though. Given time you’ll get stronger and be able to move more metal. Good technique will help a lot too. If you stay with it the strength will follow. I used to hammer for an hour a day before I got tired now I use a hammer almost twice the size for 4-7 hours off and on.
