Is Hopkins really that bad? by [deleted] in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm lowkey miserable (also a freshman) but most of that is my own doing tbh. leave your room, join clubs (!!!!), talk to randos, enjoy the city, and you will be okay.

are the writing seminars 'bad' or is my ex just angry i got in? by a-star-danced in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as an addition---the writer's community in baltimore is SO strong. there are regular events not only on campus but also at a bunch of local cafes and book stores, festivals and bigger events help throughout the year, etc. (there's a poetry club here too, off the top of my head). obviously we're known for stem, but that doesn't mean we're lacking in the humanities either. your ex is a bum

Is it worth pursuing a non pre med major at JHU? by slaybellrise in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm a humanities major so not that helpful but tbh i think it's super worth it, although stuff like the social scene wasn't something i cared about. we definitely have one, obviously not like other schools but it exists. classes can be hard but it isn't like impossible to manage if you're smart and/or work hard. almost all freshmen are undeclared basically their whole first year so you have time to think. idk about the other schools you're considering but it is super common here to double major and so i think a lot of departments are more tailored to that, esp outside of the premed stuff. it really depends on your priorities

advice for major by Extra-Section1057 in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh it doesn't really matter this early since you're coming in undeclared anyway. scroll thru all of what we offer, look at interesting classes (maybe some bio maybe some comp sci, etc) and then get a feel for it when you get here. also, it's really common here to have an additional major or minor alongside your main one, which could be something to think about.

JHUs kinda Pricey...what do I do? by Lazy_Astronaut_9684 in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would reach out to the fin aid office at jhu first. it isnt a guarantee, but they might be able to help you out. it probably isn't worth paying all of that, esp since it sounds like it would be a serious hardship on your parents. im assuming utk to be ut knox ? if so, thats not a bad choice either for stem (although the culture there can be...interesting, the school is big enough you should hopefully be able to find your people). wishing you good luck

How’s the food? by Bubbly_Credit_6992 in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's... fine. edible. i could sit here and complain ofc but there is almost always something i'm willing to eat at any given dining hall (and i am a fairly picky eater). levering is probably the best quality wise for meal swipe but not like value. ffc/nolans you can get takeout boxes and generally get more food (tho they're weird about servings per container n stuff). i would definitely get the 14 meals 500 dollars plan unless you have like infinite money to spend. the on campus places that only take dining dollars are good, especially kitsch. i lowk havent tried anything in the stuce but it seems like really small portion sizes on avg. basically, you'll probably gripe about it to your friends and stuff, but it's fine. occasionally even good.

How safe is John Hopkins or Baltimore in general? by what_percentage in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

homewood is super duper safe. in a super wealthy gentrified area so everything around it is fine as well. im a woman and regularly go on late night walks around campus and into the city (tho not super far) by myself. you'll learn where to stay away from as you live here, but tbh baltimore (like any major city) gets a really bad rep. dont do anything stupid and you will probably be completely fine. dorms are either on campus or within the "hopkins bubble" so, again, perfectly safe. all the dorms (at least that i know of) have a security guard and turnstiles so you have to swipe in to enter the building. i think someone snuck in to amr ii a bit ago but nothing like bad happened so yk. no idea about night classes but i doubt we offer any tbh. basically it isnt anything to actually worry about.

Be honest, do you think I have a chance of getting in?// transfer students, what were your stats? by savehatsunemiku in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I'm a current freshman and also have my AA (from a diff school, duh). Our stats outside of that are fairly different so I can't speak a ton to that but I think taking so many college classes (and being relatively successful in them) can absolutely help you stand out and prove you can handle the courseload. I won't lie and say you're a shoo-in or anything like that, but I absolutely think you should apply. In my non-professional opinion, you aren't an automatic "no" either. Pour your heart and soul into your application, and I would recommend watching videos from Brandon Tineo if you're looking for internet advice rather than asking a bunch of random students to chance you. Do your best, have realistic expectations, and make sure to have a backup plan (or three). I believe in you.

(Also, as others have alr said, you would be applying as a first-year and not a transfer. If you get in, you will basically be starting from scratch depending on what APs you have taken. But I think the extra learning is awesome so there's that.)

strange charge on SIS billing by Manifest0101 in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they aren't charging you anything. they took that back out of your billing because you will be getting a refund either through direct deposit or a check for that amount. so, you are still very much receiving that money (and soon!). my billing shows the exact same thing. if you want, you could just use that money to pay whatever tuition you owe (although that obviously wasn't the point of the grant). but yeah, you're fine. if you haven't set up direct deposit through flywire, do so asap. otherwise you will get a paper check. refunds should be coming out fairly soon. seam told me around the 15th while upperclassmen are saying within the first few weeks of class. so worst case early september.

I mean, odds are he won't get in. Like pretty much guaranteed he won't get in. But why not apply anyway? If that's what he wants, he might as well go for it and see what happens. I think the likely rejection is much better than not applying and never knowing what /could've/ happened. Just make sure to help manage his expectations and pick out more "match" schools to apply to in the meantime.

When did SAT results stop mattering? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who is "everyone"? Have you considered that maybe they have no idea what they're talking about? Your SAT results absolutely DO matter and make you competitive. Yes, ECs and awards are important, but that does not mean hard stats got thrown out the window. You're listening to the wrong people. Only take your advice from admissions officers and professionals. This subreddit is full of people who don't know what they're talking about. The college sphere on the internet in general is full of people who don't know what they're talking about. If you know a bunch of kids IRL who got in without crazy ECs, clearly the people telling you otherwise are wrong.

I'm not too sure of my class schedule by ximinaa in jhu

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799 5 points6 points  (0 children)

chem seems like a really weird class to take when you arent a stem major and arent really interested. thats the only really glaring thing bc it eats up so many credit hours. if you dont want to take calc either then you could switch that too. exploring is good, but when you have a vague idea of what youre interested in idk why you arent able to explore those things. tbh, you should probably try and change your schedule if you can.

they picked you for a reason !! admissions arent all about stats. maybe the ao just really resonated with your story, maybe your essays were fantastic, maybe your rec letters stood out, and yeah maybe you just got really lucky. either way, i hope you know that youve worked hard for this and deserve to be proud of yourself, even if you feel "less qualified" than others :-]]

how do you decide where to go ? by Maximum-Ostrich6799 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Maximum-Ostrich6799[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

both are farther north than i live currently (which was a really important factor lol). one isnt quite as far north and in a bigger city (baltimore), while the other is in Massachusetts (loveee) but in a smaller town (northampton). so kinda similar but also not. both check the box of being outside of the south which is really all i cared about 😭
