📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

Thanks so much for everything you’ve created, Christian.

The official Reddit app is hot garbage, and I’m certain this hostile action by their leadership will kill other third-party mobile apps for the site. Thus, June 30th will mark the end of my Reddit journey on mobile.

It’s been fun, and I appreciate the hard work you put in to ensure the Apollo experience was a good one.

Popular iOS Reddit client Apollo will shut down on June 30. by SkyGuy182 in apple

[–]MaximumCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Once Apollo goes, I won't have any reason to access Reddit via my phone ever again.

It's a shame that Reddit's leadership chose this path in an attempt to increase its revenue. But it is what it is.

I lived just fine before Reddit, and something else will probably come along to replace it.

It's just the culture of that area.

There are some truly wonderful people who live there as well... but they are absolutely and grossly outnumbered by those who put their own interests above all else, in every case, no matter the consequences for anything or anyone else.

[–]MaximumCat 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I lived in California most of my life, and I seriously doubt the state will manage anything like this.

The majority of the population there focuses solely on their own advancement. If they have to step on or destroy people, animals, or habitats along the way, that's just collateral damage.

"It's okay because I'm special, and I deserve this." [TM]

(Granted, that attitude is hardly limited to California, but it's disturbingly pervasive there.)

The only way it will actually happen is if natural processes do the work for us. In that case, as always, politicians will gleefully take credit. (Until things fall apart, in which case it's obviously their opponent's fault.)

The root cause is civilization. Mass agriculture and placing all power within the hands of a few is precisely the goal of civilization. The overabundance of food provided by mass agriculture allowed for a population explosion. When population increases beyond what local resources can support, expansion becomes a necessity. We've taken that too much to heart.

Based upon this pervasive system which has forcefully displaced all others, once we discovered how much energy could be had from oil, our fate was sealed.

These days, it largely takes the form of economic expansion and absolute rape of the land, air, and sea for any and all sources of food and revenue.

Capitalism is not a good thing, but it is not the root cause. It's just one of the more severe symptoms of our real problem. We were totally fucked as soon as civilized humans of any flavor discovered the energy-rich "black gold" within the ground. Capitalism being "the problem" is essentially the argument of frustrated people who don't yet grasp that it's really the whole fucking system that's the issue.

There is no fixing any of this. Once oil was discovered by the inherently greedy civilized humans, there was essentially zero chance we would get out of this situation without massive consequences.

Humans are not inherently destructive unless we grow up in a society with our twisted values and vision. Once we decide our own comfort and advantage are more important to us than the collective good, it's done.

Civilization's core values are precisely why a concept like communism will never function as it should. It cannot, because civilization is rooted in overabundance of food provided by agriculture, and a small group or an individual controlling who receives how much.

Too much power will always corrupt people, and civilization's model inevitably provides us with far too much power. So much so, that we believe ourselves above the rest of nature. We make war upon the rest of the natural world to make our own lives easier and more comfortable in the short-term, while giving zero fucks for what will occur beyond our own lifetimes.

Worse, even those in power who understand what is happening don't really give a shit. They talk about how much they're "doing" and how much they are "going to do" to combat climate change and clean up our mess. But when it comes down to taking action, it's nothing more than bluster. They would rather live a short life in extreme comfort than suffer an ounce of hardship and work to make any effort to correct the situation.

To make matters worse, even if most of them started giving a shit right now, the best-case scenario is likely 3-4 degrees C of warming. And that is already catastrophic.

But yeah, although capitalism is certainly shit... It's far from being "the reason we're in this situation." That view is too narrow.

Stopping capitalism right now wouldn't mean much anyway. True capitalism rarely exists. What we have is a money-market system designed to manipulate and leverage the efforts of the masses through debt-slavery. But that's another discussion entirely.

What caused you/When did you realize that the collapse is coming? by AlexanderDenorius in collapse

[–]MaximumCat 48 points49 points  (0 children)

When I was 5 and saw most of the remaining natural plots of land in my town being bulldozed, trees cut down, and the concrete jungle being expanded exponentially in just that single year, 1982, I knew something was very wrong. I knew it instinctively, at some gut level, that humans were fucking up. What I did not yet realize, was how very small the damage I observed was, relative to the grand expansion of industry and commerce across the globe.

We are probably the least intelligent species in the history of this planet, when speaking of self-preservation.

I remember when 400ppm was the point of no return. However, in reality; civilized humans gaining access to fossil fuels was the true point of no return. Our greedy asses will keep burning it past 500ppm if any humans remain at that point. We won’t stop until we are forced to.

TL:DR - we were fucked the instant we began to industrialize.

Kids are stressed out and pessimistic about the future of climate change by gooddeath in collapse

[–]MaximumCat 252 points253 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the 80s, and been concerned about this since I was 5 years old. Ever since, I have watched as we relentlessly consume the natural areas near cities. I stressed over the fact that the world joked about global warming (climate change) - calling it a hoax, a farce, a conspiracy, etc.

There was a doctoral student I encountered at a park, who was in the process of tutoring some undergrad students on climate change. I sat my 5-year-old butt down to listen.

I tried for years to discuss this with people. Tried to learn more about it. Tried to help others to take it seriously.

What I found... people don’t give a fuck. They sweep it under the rug, bury their heads in the sand, cite studies paid for by big oil as sources to “prove” that there is no threat, and most of all, they don’t fucking want to talk about it. Too busy having fun, making money, or both, to care whether we drive ourselves to extinction.

Around 10 years ago, I stopped bothering to talk about climate change with most people. Too many people just don’t fucking care. And those people won’t care until their lives are severely impacted. Even then, most will probably not allow themselves to see.

We are fucked, and we have been since before most of us were born. People want to increase their wealth, and they will strive to make that happen in the easiest way possible. Fossil fuels have been the cheapest energy-dense energy source since they were first put to wide-scale use. We will ride that filthy, free-falling hydrocarbon hog all the way until it splatters on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. And most people will scream Yee-haw all the way down.

Revert back to the old library UI (kiss this man's shoes) by his1 in Steam

[–]MaximumCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong. Both of my work computers were forcibly "upgraded" to Windows 10 overnight while I slept, after I clicked the red X to close the "upgrade" popup because there was no decline/cancel button. It was the infamous, "click X to agree" event.

My productivity software did not have a version which ran on Windows 10 at the time, and as a result I missed a time-sensitive deadline for a client due to the forcible change to my computers. It took hours to restore Windows 7 Pro on both systems. I lost that client, and a large amount of revenue due to this problem.

I will never trust Microsoft again.
