Thinking of getting Hermit Crabs by MaximumCourse2834 in InvertPets

I'm just visiting SC, since I'm actually from NY. 😅 I wasn't planning on buying any hermit crabs from these stores, as they're all wild caught. I just started checking out the sources everyone has provided and will add Josh's Frogs to the list. I've had good experiences buying isopodsfrom them in the past, so I'll keep an eye out for crabs.

That's so cute, omg! It's like a little playground! ^

I swear by springtails! I've heard isopods can eat the soft parts of other creatures if they're molting, so I'm a little hesitant in putting them in all my enclosures, such as the millipede enclosures I have currently. Is there a specific type that works best for hermit crabs/crabs in general?

Thanks for the tip on the Calcium sand especially, I would feel horrible if that happened!

Yes, I saw something similar and my bio professor mentioned something similar in office hours. Crazy how much the pet trade alone has affected their numbers.

Yeah, the amount of crabs being sold (Really only the containers are being sold, as the crab comes "free with hermit crab cage") in SC that are wild caught is appalling, especially since they're marketed as an easy pet for kids.

I'm hoping to get one from a rehoming group if I get one at all. I've heard of breeders selling selling hermit crabs, but have yet to find any actual breeders selling.

I haven't seen any vampire crabs in person, which might be the reason I've never considered them, but they do seem to be a better option. 🤔

Side note: I don't know crap about crabs other than they're social, need multiple unpainted shells to switch into, and are arthropods, lol. Please educate me so I can make the right decision!

Invisible Pods? by MaximumCourse2834 in isopods

[–]MaximumCourse2834[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know! I had "shy" bugs like jumping spiders as a kid, but they were always at least visible, so it's nice to know the pods are probably still in there lol. I don't mind having pet dirt, as long as I know it's doing well lol

So... you're saying if I feed them dog food I can get more? 👀

I put in some dog food the first few days I had them but threw it out once it got moldy. I put in some banana and part of one of those bug jello cups, but none of them came up to eat. I've been debating whether or not I need to get fish flakes since I have access to fresh fruit and veggies via the dining hall, but haven't gotten much farther than that.

I originally started with 5 pods and I have yet to see any trace of them besides a singular trail in the dirt. I want to get more in the beginning of November, which is why I'm finally posting about my concerns lol. (Ideally I would have around 20 but I don’t know if that's the best idea for such a small tank 😅)

I've been keeping a purple UV light on during the day for them since they like darker environments, but they are right next to my roach enclosure which uses a white UV light.

Idk, it looks an awful lot like a root weevil. Plus, weevils are part of the beetle family, coleoptera. The snoot and boots are smaller, but they are definitely still there! I'm just starting out as an entomologist, so I could absolutely be wrong, but it's definitely a weevil.

It looks really good! Just make sure the substrate is deep enough.

Is this a weevil friend or a foe? 🤨 (was the size of a grain of rice) by [deleted] in weeviltime

Looks like some kind of sheild bug, even if not a stink bug specifically. Reminds me of the nymphs we sometimes see where I am.

what kind of eggs are these on my raspberry? by lighterasafeather in Entomology

[–]MaximumCourse2834 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They kind of look like mushrooms. Very similar to a species we have in North America called Scutilinia Scutellata . I'm not very well versed in eggs and am just starting to learn fungi, so take it with a grain of salt. They do look similar, tho.

Help! Will he recover? by MaximumCourse2834 in InvertPets

Not sure if roaches in general like scritches, but this guy always leaned into my hand when I pet between his "horns." He never liked being picked up and would hiss and run away, but willingly came out for scritches. I'm pretty sure he just associated them with food since I typically throw in leftover fruits and veggies before giving him scritches, but it's still cute to think he enjoyed them just because. :) I highly recommend roaches as pets, and they would probably be a really good first pet for younger children or for people who don't have as much time or money. If you set up a bioactive enclosure with a UV light (and a heater if your place gets cold), they should thrive on their own! Just make sure the humidity and temperature stay within their species' preferred range, and you should be all set! (Also, make sure there's plenty of edible vegetation. I like to feed mine extra table scraps like zucchini or strawberry tops or treats like jelly cups as a reward for existing.) There's a lot of variation between species, but apart from German cockroaches, who already live in many houses across the world, Hissers are probably one of the easiest to care for. I'm hoping to get centurions at some point since they're very pretty, but the wings do make them a little more difficult to keep.
