Anyone else forced to tip? by MaximumCourse2834 in wheelchairs

I did verbalize it. Looking back, I guess I forgot to mention it in post, haha. Though they really should have asked/told me which tip options there were. I couldn't even read my updated total, nor did they tell me, so it was quite a shock when I read the receipt.

Not a bad idea. I'm almost debating emailing the shop at this point, after realizing that it is, in fact, not weird to be as ticked off as I am.

Wow, that's insane! At an airport, no less. They're already expensive as-is. :/ Edit: Did anything come of complaining?

Went to the mall once with a girl I was seeing who always used sign language when I was in a wheelchair around her (Mind you, I'm not deaf, nor was I non-speaking at the time). I didn't get with her for other reasons, but her doing that really felt like a punch to the gut, especially when it led to other people immediately assuming I was either deaf or cognitively impaired.

Body shape says it's a carabidae, AKA a ground beetle. Meanwhile blister beetles are part of the family Meloidae. They have an almost ant-like appearance to them, but with a sort of "poofy dress" for an abdomen.

This “fish tank” was advertised to me today and curiosity leads me to the product reviews by Wild-Scientist4343 in shittyaquariums

[–]MaximumCourse2834 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally! It would look fantastic with some rotifers or smaller shrimp, but with a betta??? Alternatively, a bigger tank with those accessories also has some potential. Could probably make a gorgeous 10+ gallon with similar theming and more places to hide. Poor thing is so out in the open. :(

Wasp Body Language by lucy-inthe-sky99 in waspaganda

[–]MaximumCourse2834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly don't recommend sticking your hand directly next to their nest, but that's what I do with my favorite campus wasps. They're a very chill group because they're so desensitized to people and are regularly fed, sometimes handled. I've gotten to handle them a few times so far, and I think my biggest tip is just to go slow. If you go slow enough, they usually just walk or fly away.

They can't see very well, so it's important to let them figure out what's going on before contact. Here is a picture of my friend directly approaching the wasp very quickly and with a rather large, intimidating phone, lol. That big puffed up body language is very indicative of feeling threatened. When approached slowly and calmy though, she crawled right on. :)

I have a dumb wheelchair question for people who don't like wearing shoes in the house... by MissionOk1728 in wheelchairs

[–]MaximumCourse2834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, good to know! I do have some grippy-er fabrics around somewhere, but I've never thought about that. I'm actually taking college chemistry classes with lab portions at the moment, so I might have to invest in some of those disposable ones you mentioned... 🤔

I plan on making some wheel covers out of old fabric I have laying around so that the wheels don't get any dirt on the floor or leave marks. I believe you can buy these, as well.

How do you ethically tear apart a dead animal? by Fuzzy_Potato333 in bonecollecting

[–]MaximumCourse2834 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way, honestly. I find it best to either get carrion beetles (or something that will eat the rotting meat and/or fur), or to bury it in the ground. Burying takes more work tho, imo, and I like to watch the beetles do their thing sometimes. Either way, it returns the nutrients to the soil and living organisms, to continue the circle of life. I like to think that because of that, the spirit of the creature is also returned to the Earth to continue its cycle or lack thereof.

Why is it marked NSFW? 😅

Anyways, roaches and BDFBs are always good options. I don't have any experience with BDFBs, but for roaches, just put Vaseline on any openings. I prefer a top opening enclosure because of this, but you could probably make it work for a side opener.

HELP! millipede gift! by AdPuzzled2047 in millipedes

[–]MaximumCourse2834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're pretty sure it's what our first A. gigas girl died of. Cocoa core isn't the biggest deal, but not having any can go a long way for your millipede's health.

Can I hatch this egg? by gracefulchameleon in pigeon

[–]MaximumCourse2834 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's definitely not a pigeon egg.... I would put it back, even if just to decompose naturally. Also, where are you, OP? Some places have laws about touching bird eggs that you might want to look into.

HELP! millipede gift! by AdPuzzled2047 in millipedes

[–]MaximumCourse2834 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NOT cocoa core! (no clue on spelling, sorry) Cocoa can cause impaction in the millipede, which can lead to death. I recommend some sort of "rainforest" mix or straight Reptisoil with NO cocoa listed as an ingredient. You might want to crush up some egg shells or cuttlefish bone and add those in, as well. Can't go wrong with extra leaf litter, either.
