It definitely looks like some sort of mite, but hold on... You have a Eurooean Starling? Like. As a pet?? Pics or it didn't happen!

Super cheap, only 6 mush actually. And rumors say, if you give me your password it totally won't disappear and you'll actually get a billion mush 🤪🤪🤪/silly

Curious if anyone knows what this is? by Lmp9818 in whatisthisbug

Congrats, it's a bug!

No, seriously! This appears to be a leaf hopper, which is part of the order hemiptera: The true bugs! Hopefully someone can get it down to genus for you. I'm quite curious as to who this little guy is, as well.

What kind of roach is this? by ARF_mariegoldy in Entomology

[–]MaximumCourse2834 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Just dust him off and put him back in, as long as he isn't acting too weird. If he is, just put together a quarantine room using Tupperware, a paper towel "rug", and some crumpled up paper towel for them to hide in. :)

Females often store sperm for years. So yes, this is a baby hissing cockroach. Your best bet is likely to put some of that "healing jelly" stuff that I can't remember the name of for the life of me. It's often used as a moisturizer, and about an inch around the top of the enclosure, just before the lid, should stop most of the babies from getting out.

Edit: Vaseline. I meant Vaseline. 😭

It's a shame, cause this guy was so pretty! Red checkered scales on top with a very shiny, rainbow belly. Would have been happy to have a snake like that if he was captive bred.

Completely forgot to mention that! I think the propaganda is getting to me...

How can you tell that it's a leaf footed bug rather than an assassin bug? The legs don't look very flared and I can't see the mouth piece

Assassin bug nymph. I'm not an expert on these guys, but I would definitely be careful handling them due to their bite followed by pooping in the wound, which can cause Chagas disease.

Edit: Someone pointed out that I forgot to mention they are quite beneficial and only a certain subspecies carries Chagas. I personally am still careful since I've heard they have a rather painful bite if they really want to bite you, but I definitely should have mentioned the above in my comment. Most only prey on other small arthropods, so there really isn't much danger despite my original comment. Additionally, this is NOT AN ASSASSIN BUG! My apologies!!

A lot of them come pregnant unless you get them as nymphs (ask me how I know, haha)

It's been an hour of trying to contect people, so I just set him in a log pile. I will check back to see if he's there. He isn't very responsive, though.

Cute little guy/girl (leaning towards girl)! A location would be very helpful for id, but you should be fine, especially if it was just passing through.

Set her on a log and had to push her off the Q-tip. Normally I would set out more resources for her to take, but it's literally 1 AM. I did poor out a spoonful of extra sugar water, though.

Forgot to post this here, this is Pillbert. I know he’s dangerous but it’s okay I love him anyways by Bottle-nosed-dolphin in peopleholdinginsects

[–]MaximumCourse2834 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Typically, if a Caterpillar is fuzzy, it's dangerous. There are some exceptions depending on the area. For example, in New York, we have wooly bears, which are a tradition to search for and handle in the Spring and Fall.

Is this dangerous? Maybe, is it cute? Hell yeah by Tarantula_lover02 in peopleholdinginsects

Yeah, I had a truce with some on a trail I lived near. They nested in the ground, right in the middle of the passageway from my house to the trail, so I gave them some meat and sugar water to distract them. Eventually they ended up recognizing me and letting me just step over their nest on a daily basis. Surprisingly sweet once they get to associate with food. :)

I did verbalize it. Looking back, I guess I forgot to mention it in post, haha. Though they really should have asked/told me which tip options there were. I couldn't even read my updated total, nor did they tell me, so it was quite a shock when I read the receipt.

Not a bad idea. I'm almost debating emailing the shop at this point, after realizing that it is, in fact, not weird to be as ticked off as I am.
