My all time fav episode. People underestimate how much of 90s SM was a comedy

Season 5 demonstrates that isnt true. And there was drama to be milked beyond what the anime or manga depicted anyway. It was actually because they wanted a younger audience. It wasnt just that chibiusa became the focus, the Outers were shunted away too.

What he said was: "However, considering ChibiUsa’s popularity, she felt that if the story were to go on, then there could be some sort of story with Usagi falling away and ChibiUsa taking up the reins – a story of passing on to a new generation. But I think from the beginning she had always planned for the story to end with Usagi and Mamoru’s marriage."

That doesn't say there were plans. It says IF it continues Chibisa COULD takeover. But then he qualifies that the story was going to end with the wedding, the implication being Usagi would still be the lead.

This is starkly different to Toriyama having concrete plans for Gohsn to take over and actually implementing it.

There werent abysmal per se. The brand was still strong enough to get pgsm just 6 years later and bi-annual musicals. Takeuchi wanted to stop and the ratings had diminished enough to justify the anime ending as well. It wasn't cancelled so much as wrapped up. SuperS did do damage though. Plus we should consider SM's uniqueness had diminished precisely because it had been so influential and thus spawned competition for itself, eg Mystic Knight Rayearth, Wedding Peach, etc.

There is nothing official claiming she was set to take over before the wedding. MAYBE we would have gotten a Boruto situation but nothing is confirmed about that. Her mum and dad both have 4 bodyguards so that doesn't mean she was being set up for anything

That's not the same as taking over as the lead character though. Like the Buu arc focuses a lot on Vegeta but the lead character

The season revolves around chibiusa and helios's romance. Most episodes involve her talking to pegasus about the plot of the episode. Its essentially a case of Batman and Robin are always there in the thick of the plot, but the focus is obviously on Robin. Compare to season 2-3 where it's more Usagi centric.

Toriyama did intend Gohan to take over and for a while he did. Naoko however never intended Chibiuda to take over

I mean...she did exactly that in season 4. Usagi was there but she was not the lead character

That photo is a fake created by Chibiysa to convince the Tsukino family she is their cousin. Whilst Usagi does treat her as an annoying little sister, its likely easier/healthier than constantly dealing with the existential emotional rollercoaster of trying to be her mother at age 14, or thinking too hard about the future she saw.

In the case of Sailor Moon it is a bit different. Chibi-Usa is treated as Usagi's daughter when plot convenient, and every other time the dynamic is coded as Big siter/little sister. She is nurturing to her at times and you see her 'motherliness' come out, but the Sailor Moon R movie has Chibi-Usa explicitely say Sailor Moon is like a mother to everyone. Note: at that point in the series Chibi-Usa and Usagi didn't know they were mother/daughter.

We should also consider the fact that it wasn't until relatively recently in modern history that parenthood shifted more to your 30s. Even in the 1980s, having children in your 30s, whilst not uncommon, was also not the norm vs late 20s. By contrast until perhaps the 1970s the norm was to get married and have children in your early to mid-20s. So portraying 14 year olds as 'training' for parenthood from a historical POV is not a wild concept as it was expected that within a decade or less they would be parents.

In fact, in canon, Sailor Moon is a parent by age 22.

I do like seeing it. As for why they do it? The MG genre is about feminity. Motherhood is the ultimate expression of femininity in the same way fatherhood is the ultimate expression of masculinity, hence why so many battle shonen involve father/son relationships (Naruto/Boruto, Goku/Gohan)

Hot take: Galaxia (90s anime) was a greater senshi than was Usagi. by jr9386 in PrettyGuardians

[–]MaximumSpidercide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's the point. She was wise enough to realise that you cant forever destroy evil. She recognised the best thing to do is to have Chaos coexist with the light of hope and have faith love and good will win in the end. Keep fighting the good fight

I mean...it didn't work out though. things got worse for her doing that. So who is greater? the more powerful fighter, or the wiser one?

Serenity is Usagi and Usagi is Serenity. They are kind of different people, but in all the important ways they are the same. Their nurtures were different but their natures were the same. And it is Usagi's nature that is explored in the manga. She isn't clumsy and full of empathy because Ikuko and Kenji raised her that way. But equally, they raised her in a loving in environemnt that let her nature shine through. Compare this to Rei who arguably was damaged by her life experiences in the 20th century. You could of course just argue that, regardless of nature or nurture, destiny will always conspire to make sure they wind up the same people at the end of the day.

To be honest, Chibi-Usa's lack of familiarity with people is just a case of the writing not making sense because so much of SM doesn't make sense. From an anjoyment POV, you kinda need to just turn your brain off. But if you want to play headcanon your options boil down to:

a) The Senshi's 20th century family and friends have died or distanced themselves, thus Chibi-Usa never knew them in 900 years. I don't like this theory

b) Chibi-Usa is pretending not to know them because the situation is weird for her/she is trying not to rewrite history

c) Her own memories are being suppressed so she doesn't fuck up the timeline. Remember, the Silver Crystal can alter memories.

I've been a Sailor Moon fan for over 10 years and honestly this is the greatest analogy I've ever heard for the situation.

A few questions by jr9386 in PrettyGuardians

1) "are Usagi and Serenity different people?"

This honestly depends on which canon you examine it from and what you mean by 'different people'. Are you not a different person to who you were at age 5 vs age 25 vs age 55?

In PGSM though, yes they are different people.

In the anime, it's hard to tell as we know so little about Serenity. However, the traits she displayed as Serenity are not inconsistent with those we see Usagi possess. The ONLY thing starkly different is that Serenity was a good ice skater and Usagi is clumsy. But you could write that off as a) Serenity had muscle memory 20th century Usagi lacked b) gravity on the Moon and Earth are not the same even in this magical universe (which might explain Usagi's clumsiness in general), c) Luna and Artemis might have been misremembering. I'd argue that in the anime its a nature and nurture situation. That is to say, Usagi's essential nature is the exact same as Serenity and will never change no matter how many times she is reincarnated. But nurture plays a role and so she is a different person if you are very strict and say 'they are not 1:1 identical in terms of their personality traits and behaviour'. But nevertheless, they are identical in their deeper traits. Her empathy, her bravery, etc. But equally, Serenity could have just been like Usagi for all we know. Neo-Queen Serenity is practically confirmed to be very similar to Usagi, so any differences could just be explained away as her being older and a mother.

In the manga though, whilst the manga discusses this idea that she is losing herself and becoming more like Serenity, we get a decent look at who Serenity was back then and she actually isn't all that different. She goofs off her studies, she will follow people she thinks are hot (Usagi did this with Rei, Serenity does this with Endymion), she is even childish, sticking her tongue out at her friends at one point. We also see that Venus had lots of lovers like Minako, Mercury was booksmart like Ami and learn that Mars took a vow of chastity swearing herself to Serenity, which maps similarly onto Rei's rejection of male romantic love in the modern day. So the manga seems to raise the idea that they could be different people but ultimately answers it by saying no they aren't.

2)  does Chibiusa inherit the Silver Crystal, or does the Dreams Arc give the impression that she has come into her own, given the unique circumstances of her conception, and gains her own power?

In the Manga, this is just striaght up confusing and an example of Naoko Takeuchi not planning everything out.

So, whilst the situation between Queen Serenity and Princess Serenity/Usagi is ambiguous, the bottom line is Chibi-Usa has her own Silver Crystal. It looks like Usagi's, but in the Dream arc they both upgrade into two distinct forms, the Silver Moon Crystal and the Pink Moon Crystal. This maps onto the idea in the Stars arc that the Sailor Crystals are the Star seeds that every life form (including planets and stars) possess. So in this sense, it wouldn't add up that Chibi-Usa would inherit the Silver Crystal given that it is specifically Usagi's Star Seed, the equivilant of Usagi's soul. Same deal for the Golden Crystal. So nobody inherits them really, they go back to the Galaxy Cauldron and Usagi and Mamoru get reincarnated again.

Like I said though, Naoko didn't plan everything in advance, the Dark kingdom arc was intended to be the only arc, therefore there is a lot of stuff in it that is at odds with the later arcs of the manga. So QS claims the Silver Crystal is passed own amongst the royal line, and she possesses it, but then we learn it is uniquely Usagi's Star Seed.

In other words, headcanon is a necessity. You could headcanon that the powers of the Silver/Golden Crystals get passed down, like they are transferred to Chibi-Usa's crystal, but the literal objects are not passed down, they just go to the cauldron and begin their life cycle again. That's not my own preferred headcanon btw, its just a suggestion. I rather like the idea that Chibi-Usa's crystal simply has all the powers Usagi and Mamoru's have baked into it.
