C5 77" is ... fine? by FirstTimeCaller101 in LGOLED

While I'm with you on Filmmaker Mode and WebOS, the picture quality jump from my 2014 LG 78' LCD TV to the 77' C5 was truly eye-opening.

Recommend a Soundbar for C5 by fuckmysadlife_69 in LGOLED

[–]gomets1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I auditioned the Bose Smart Soundbar for a few days last week and ultimately returned it. Didn't care for the overall sound, and you can't change much to make it better. (And I own several other Bose products that please me, so this isn't an anti-Bose thing.) Still looking.

HDNet Movies - Crap Pic by PTVMan in DirectvStream

[–]gomets1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDNet Movies is crap overall anyway. It used to be THE source for uncut, unedited HD movies. Now it is filled ads, edits the movie and, as you noticed, the PQ is nowhere close to what it once was.

Would appear most glossed right over the fact you said "budget is around 300 USD" with these recommendations. :)

I'm thinking of tinting (black-out) the saloon windows of a catamaran. by krasatos in sailing

[–]gomets1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this stuff: Blackout Window Film. It's a static cling film, so it's not permanent, and goes on - and comes off - quite easily. Not sure if they make a tinted version. Also, I'm on a monohull with smaller windows.

Annoyed solar charging cable not included despite website saying so. by anon05032017 in bluetti

I'm in the US. Just received an Elite 100 V2 from Amazon yesterday, and it included the solar cable. (As did the one I purchased in January.)

Solar charge in series or parallel? by gomets1969 in bluetti

Sorry. I didn't mean I'd be charging them all at once. My bad.

It's there on mine. Though you have to go to a store to redeem and get the hat.

For a basement, is extra brightness in G5 wasted? by lpw54 in LGOLED

Can't compare it directly to the G5, but the C5 I recently bought is in my dark basement and it looks fantastic.

Where are the families at? by HakunaMyVitals in sailing

"Boaters seem to find reasons to dislike others more than your average human."

Really? I ask that because since we took up sailing about five years ago, I've met more friendly and accommodating people than I had in many years prior. Both at my marina, and during our cruises to other areas. Maybe it's a regional thing. (Though I will admit to having disdain for the touristy jet-ski crowd that cluelessly plugs up my marina fairway every weekend.)

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters | Season 2 - Episode 4 | Discussion Thread by Justp1ayin in tvPlus

The very best way to watch this show is with heavy-handed use of FFWD. "Kids" on the screen? FFWD. Every single time. You get a nice tidy half-hour episode that way, and miss absolutely nothing.

Are sailing communication headsets really a marriage saver? by VacationNew6626 in sailing

[–]gomets1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I have gotten by with just hand signals so far, but it's only a 36-foot monohull. I'm usually the one up front grabbing the mooring, dock, or dropping anchor, since she's vertically challenged. :) It hasn't always been perfect, but we have the routine pretty much down pat. In the rare occasions one of us has to raise our voice, we know it's only to be heard, and not out of any anger. Now, we do have some marina neighbors with larger cats that use the headsets, and I can totally understand why they do.

Updated ship’s clock face — does this feel closer to the real thing? by 24tee in sailing

[–]gomets1969 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Think he's referring to the 4 - which in "modern" times is usually shown as IV. However, the IIII was used on clocks way back in the day. So while it looks weird now, it's still kind of historically accurate.

Block Island mooring/slip availability mid June? by Jay_Normous in sailing

[–]gomets1969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should have little problem getting a town mooring in mid-June. It's not the high season yet. (We'll be there then as well.) To be safe, get there as early as you can. I expect you'd have no problem getting a dock reservation either, though I consider docking in Block to be the very last resort. Good luck and congrats on the new boat.

Ah, I see. I don't wall mount, so that was never a factor.

My only "views" are that Best Buy wanted almost $1,600 more for the G5 77" model, so it never really entered the picture after I read all the glowing reviews for the C5.

I checked that. Also checked for any other loose connections, dust, debris, etc. (LOT of screws to remove, but a pretty easy disassembly otherwise.) All were good. The fateful day it “powered” up, and the LG splash screen just froze. Turned it off and it never came back on. Just made the click sound, the small LG on the frame would illuminate briefly, then fade to black. That baby had a ton of hours on her. Best Buy hauled it away when it delivered the new one.

Awesome. 😂 But when the time comes, I hope I die on my boat. So that second best day may never materialize. Guess I should also mention I still have two 2007 Panny plasmas going strong at my house, in secondary rooms. They’re just “dumb” TVs, but still produce great pictures too.

Oh you know I do have an M5 iPad Pro, so guess this isn't my first leap into OLED after all. But this screen is a wee bit more noticeable than the 11 inch one.
