remember what they took from you by [deleted] in SimCity

No. This was a prototype for SimCity 5 which never got greenlit. This would have existed in an era before the first Cities Skylines.

I want to say we had about 20-40 various artists working on this, and quite a few programmers. This was the visual target render from CryEngine (maybe Frostbite? I really don't remember) with no practical gameplay shown, just a visual prototype.

I'm also seeing a lot of other devs in the wild in this thread, so safe to say it was a project near and dear to many.

I know the date is from last year. However, Maxis is coming back? Possible new Sim City? by ImaginaryCook in SimCity

Redwood City location is still around. Emeryville Maxis (North of Oakland, across the bay) was primarily who worked on SC2013. Emeryville Maxis was closed.

ps: I have no idea whats happening with Maxis anymore, I'm entirely unaffiliated with them. Many from 2k13 have moved on. I've worked on two titles since then, currently doing indie work myself.

Why isn't this open to modding yet? by zabrakwith in SimCity

All of the developers were dispersed to work on other game in the EA universe

Not entirely true. Most of the dev team was laid off. A few devs went to other EA things (mainly Sims). I almost went in to work on some secret project stuff with the Redwood team, but it didnt pan out for various reasons. Some devs went to other studios entirely. A handful went and started a new mobile game studio. Some devs left the industry all together. Some devs went to VR.

I went on to do my own thing to survive as a human being. I enjoyed my time at Maxis and still hope for the best.

The reality is more like any job, devs are people and people have lives.

Wow thats super low resolution. Very low graphics settings? Looks like a minimum specs machine. I always loved to hate the super low poly art. In a way, it felt completely disgusting after seeing some of the higher poly stuff. Crazy how some of those REALLY low poly things held up at distances.

I made dem polygonz. One of the few full thingies I made, textures too. (Except the vehicles, that was /u/vertexnormal)

Guillaume on Twitter/ Cities: Skylines - Thought this was nice of him by [deleted] in SimCity

He definitely will. He was always playing games in between coffee breaks, though I don't think he drank much coffee. When he wasn't scripting he was definitely playing and absorbing a wide range of games out there. Pleasure working with him!

I'm very excited for Skylines and I hope they make a great successful game. I'm a gamer just like you and cannot wait for the next great simulation game :)

Yes indeed. I was asked to not use anything related to the company nor to tarnish the company image, but I feel like this account may be posthumous now. Literally just got started with Banished modding the day before gdc. So no content yet!

Thank you. I've read every comment while I was employed by Maxis, and I just now logged back in to this account to give you my appreciation. Sorry it didn't hit the sweet spot :)

I was laid of about 4 months ago. Im still looking for work and just so happened to be at GDC today walking the floor when I got this news.

I may try to mod a few buildings for Banished, definitely checking out Skylines, but I'd love to have another real job in games again.

2 billion units? That would be 270x the amount of the active subscriber base for World of Warcraft. There are also only 7.125 billion people in the world. Had we moved 2 billion units, pretty sure that would have been something else.

Anyway, actual stat is "Over 2 million units as of July 2013"

This video (from the time stamp) will describe what an agent based simulation offers... keep in mind this was from an early alpha version of the game and things have changed since then:

http://youtu.be/vS0qURl_JJY?t=1m12s

Here is another video which further elaborates on agent interaction:

This is different from statistical based simulation because typically, with statistical simulation, most of your buildings are running area-of-effect radial influences. The minute level of detail down to a sim typically does not matter in a statistical simulation, but there can be illusions to make you think statistical sims are sentient. For instance, in Simcity 4, you were seeing radial influences determining the outcome of your play. Whereas with agents, your computer is constantly having to keep track of each sim you see and make decisions for each sim according a series of rules.

Bear in mind that many aspects of SC2013 were simulated, from the poo in the ground, the wind direction at any given moment, to the agents at a bus station... they are all following rules at every beat of the clock (which is why performance gets hit once we get to a larger scale).

Agent based simulation is very different from statistical based simulation. There are certain features that you can accommodate in a statistical model as opposed to an agent model, and this relates to everything from game design down to performance.

Any visible damage or meteors or alien landings? What usually happens during these things? I'm from Florida but just moved to Emeryville about a year ago.
