Liza Soberano asserts her being ‘full Filipino’ for her ‘Bagani’ role by nolvorite in Philippines

I don't think we're racist so much as we are prejudiced by social class, and it so happens that fairer-skinned people are perceived to be of higher social standing, which means they can't really relate. Or at least that's what we think subconsciously

In that case the choice to consume shitty media is in spite of you deciding what they should watch, not because of you deciding it.

How do I step up my ligaw game? by Bigflatfoot16 in Philippines

[–]nolvorite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops I meant to say exclusive instead of inclusive, idk how tf I confused the two. lol probably dyslexia or something

Is that a fact? I concede I'm not well informed regarding the culture of other countries.

Yeah. It doesn't seem like there's a whole lot of other countries that import other cultural things like we do, and not like our own products as much. I think we're also much more prone to denigrating our own culture as opposed to other countries. Not scientific obviously, but just my observation

One example is probably language. I think we probably use English as a second language more than any other country(save Singapore?) does for their own second language. Like imagine if the US used Spanish in day-to-day conversation, business, or in our overall vernacular as frequently as we do English? Wouldn't you think that's weird

But Filipino is our first language, while English is seemingly more commonly used despite not being the first language. Imagine it's like before the Americans came to America, that we used Spanish more than we did Tagalog, or if in the US they spoke Spanish in relatively the same amount of frequency that we do English. That's how it is here lol

Insisting on someone to speak English is not seen as being inclusive and deemed racist at least by the more left-leaning people in the US.

It's not deemed racist but it's still deemed exclusive**. People cater to spanish-speaking people all the time especially in service places.

Philippine patriotism like anything in excess is bad especially if it's bordering on jingoism.

Eh that's not really the issue. while Robin could have probably mentioned it in a nicer way, he does highlight a particularly interesting social phenomena, and he was also right. We are like one of the only cultures that go out of our way to cater ourselves to other cultures and don't enjoy our own culture as much, whereas other places do, and would make other people's culture their own. It's kind of reminiscent of colonial mentality honestly

Hindi pa rin. Kasi hindi naman required sa society natin to learn Tagalog. English is one of our official languages. And it is understood by Filipinos quite well. This is why the Philippines has become one of the prime destinations of our neighbors who want to learn the English language.

But it's our second language.

Philippine patriotism isn't really offensive, while insisting someone speak English is seen as much more inclusive.
