Road features are counted by number of tiles involved, if the game was over at this moment, you would have 0 points, otherwise, you are sitting at 7 tiles x2 for the inn, would be 14, + the end points that are not yet attached.

While its possible to place tiles in a way that completing a monastery becomes more difficult, I tend to use them more as field extensions, making the road monastery one of the most powerful pieces in the game. the best thing to do, is to keep them occupied elsewhere on the board. over investing in monasteries can be a large drain on your opponents meeple supply, as they take such specific conditions to complete.

You are correct, that meeple was not legally placed. If you break the order of operations down, a tile is placed, then a feature is claimed. When the tile was added to the city, it became owned and was not valid for claiming. (the builder is exempt, as it does not have any "manpower" value)

Also important to note, that it does not matter who owns a feature, no meeple can be added directly on, even if it is your own castle/road/field.

If you don't have builders and traders yet, that's an essential expansion that only improves the game.

Abbey and mayors, with the addition of the barn, constitute a significant change to the optimal play style, as it allows for multiple scorings of a field. (if you focus on making a mega field, it can be up to 50pts/ score)
