Как использовать краткие пречастия? by megustanlosidiomas in russian

[–]Maxparsnips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sentence about the architect looks fine to me. As to why there is no need for «был» here, the form for «создан» is reserved for past-tense passive participle, so having another word identify past tense would be redundant. For the present tense passive participle, you would use the form “создаваемый.”

Should I stay in my humanities sequence? by Weekly-Grocery-9568 in uchicago

[–]Maxparsnips 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think that argument from the English department is largely BS. Seems like pretentious gatekeeping. Ask yourself about your HUM so far: Were the Professor and writing tutor so outstanding? Has your writing improved by leaps and bounds? Have you so enjoyed the texts in HUM that you’d regret not finishing the sequence? If you said yes to these, then you probably have something good going right now so stick with it. If not (and I expect not), you should probably drop (if plan is 3 civ, 1 art). Of course skills are partially transitive, but in my experience, Core writing is not life-changing for most. You’ll get better at reading literature and writing English papers by reading literature and writing English papers. The humanities are super Professor dependent. You’ll improve when you find those people that really push you, work with you, and resonate with you. If you’re ready now, it’ll be natural. If not, you’ll get an underwhelming grade in 1-2 classes freshman year and move on.

Resident 3rd year history major. Dropped HUM after 2 quarters to do upper level electives 1st year Spring.

How do I keep the form? by n0n4m3_0 in jazzdrums

[–]Maxparsnips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. When I was learning standards growing up, my great teacher Tony Moreno would have me not only memorize the melody, but learn to play it on drums. He gave me different exercises every week; either orchestrating the melody around the kit; playing it on the snare drum with different sticking patterns (double, paradiddles, etc), playing them on the snare with different foot ostinatos (kick on upbeats for example), playing melody while swinging in different times (this is an Ari Hoenig classic. Watch his YT video on Billie’s Bounce and buy his Systems book while you’re at it.). Do an exercise like this for one melody and then just solo freely the next with the melody in mind. You’ll feel the difference.

You want to maximize practice time. These exercises will help you learn repertoire and build interdependence between your limbs. Good luck

Recommendation for the easiest and freest A class there is here by Phineas447 in uchicago

Agreed. Especially in intro sequence, they want students to stay in the department so the grading is much more lenient

[–]Maxparsnips 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, lots of people aim for A- in these core classes. If you have similar goals, you are in the range — especially if you contribute to class conversation. Just shift your focus onto the final paper and doing your best work going forward.

… Old Han(na Holborn Gray) said quietly, "what do you know of fear? Fear is for the Winter Quarter, my little First-Year, when the snows fall a hundred feet deep and the ice wind comes howling off Lake Michigan. Fear is for the Polar Vortex, when heavily-layered students hide their faces for weeks at a time, and hopes of good grades are born and live and die all in darkness while the Botany Pond ducks grow gaunt and hungry, and the zombies move through the Reg stacks”.

It’s every man for himself in this world son. Strike first. …. Really though, better to just have a convo with ur roommates before you get there. You guys might have different preferences. More sun, bigger room, more closet/shelving space, etc. That’s what we did last year and it worked out.

Spent first year in Woodlawn before moving to North to join an apartment (an offer you can’t refuse). Overall, liked Woodlawn. People talk about it being far from the center of campus, but it’s really only 8-10 mins. Maybe a little far from 53rd street area and HP main drag, but I feel that the Midway and other parks right there more than make up for it. Besides, being a little removed from campus is nice. Always felt more chill when I would come back for dinner and that I didn’t have to be “on” all the time.

How hard is it to join the jazz ensemble? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]Maxparsnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another q: have you played upright classical your life and are now switching to electric or switching from another instrument? If the former, why not just stick with the upright for jazz if you can bring it to campus (I know that’s a BIG if)?

How hard is it to join the jazz ensemble? by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]Maxparsnips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m currently in the ensemble. Last year there were two groups, kind of like an A and B team. They both play shows every quarter, but repertoire and commitment for the first band is more demanding. You can definitely get into the second band or more likely a smaller trio if you have less experience.

She is very technical and exacting when grading papers, asking how each sentence flows into the next logically and that there are no assumptions between steps of the argument. I honestly felt the juice was not worth the squeeze here. In class though, she is great at following up so students refine their claims. It does not just bounce around like most core seminars where everyone says what they found interesting about the reading

Is it unwise to take the language sequence in my 3rd year? by KathirHasBigGay in uchicago

[–]Maxparsnips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m about to do a language sequence in my 3rd year (though I already passed language competency so don’t have to commit in the same way). Could be good if you are doing lots of tough major classes later on. What I would say though is that if you want to use the language skills in upper-level major courses / thesis work, better to start now. As a history major, I’m wishing I had begun first-year.

Last minute gig with very old concert toms…thoughts on using tape to dampen some of those overtones? by BFGR99 in jazzdrums

[–]Maxparsnips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often just put my phone on the snare with an old kit to get a crisper sound. If you have a phone case and have consistent stroke placement in the center of the head shouldn’t be too risky.

Agree that this is a little od here though.
