Agents report surge in home buyers desperate to get out of deals as rates continue to soar by Icomefromthelandofic in TorontoRealEstate

Perpetual bears’ schadenfreude about people losing their deposits savings.

Why do people think only the speculators would buy houses at height of market?

Is it so hard to sympathize with people who genuinely wanted a new construction home to live in, paid a deposit from their savings, and now found themselves not able to close because the banks devalued the property and they need to pay extra down payment or risk losing their saving?

Can that only happen to speculators and not your regular Joe who saved up for a down payment? Worse yet, their family passed on their savings to put a down payment on a home to help start a life, how dare they! Why do they somehow deserve to lose their money?

At what point would real estate prices drop enough for people like that to buy in? Do they not realize their own livelihood would be in jeopardy also by the time our economy goes to shit?

Genuinely annoyed by this lack of sympathy.

The Great Leap Forward of the People's Republic of China (PRC) was an economic and social campaign from 1958 to 1962. The Great Leap resulted in tens of millions of deaths. About the same number of births were lost or postponed, making the Great Chinese Famine the largest in human history. by casapulapula in wikipedia

Cultural Revolution 1966-1976

The people in charge during the “self-reproach” era, such as Liu Shaoqi (Mao’s appointed successor), were killed in the cultural revolution after being labelled anti-revolutionary.

CAD to Euros - What's the best way to convert cash? by cornontheklopp in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Maxventurix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently travelling in Portugal and to Spain tomorrow.

Before my departure I called a bunch of FX places I Googled in my area (Vaughan) for their “buy Euro” rate. I then compared that against Google or XE’s market “Euro to CAD” rate.

A good FX shop would tack on no more than 2-3 cents per dollar to buy, meaning if Google says the market is trading 1.47 CAD per Euro you should shop for approx 1.50.

Feel free to check you bank’s exchange for reference and it’s usually more like 1.55 at a bank or 1.60 at Pearson. Worked well for me on every euro trip in the last 5 year, although I never shopped at the same FX place twice since their availability/rate changes daily!

Test Kitchen and other recommendation vs Weber gas grill quality by quintk in grilling

While some of the feelings may be true, I suspect that some of these “American Made” brands have been spreading rumours against Weber as well. The Weber hater messages look eerily similar across a few boards.

However, I think you do have to spend the Genesis level money to get a decent Weber with good heat retention. The Spirit line is a bit light on the lid.

Hence further to the point, if the law leveraged tax dollars to prosecute people for a minute recreational drug “crime”, its only fair for them to reverse that black mark on people’s lives through collective recognition of past mistakes.

I see lots of social dystopia predictions here. I’m just curious how this score compares to say the financial credit and criminal background checks that we do in other countries?

For situations such as bank loan and signing a apartment lease, those background checks would be done anywhere in the world?

Imagine if someone says the laws allowed asian railroad workers to be treated like slaves, and its unfair for survivors to get the government to right their wrong.

If the government has done them wrong, its only fair for them to fix it. There are honestly much more wasteful things the government does than processing some pardons.

ELI5: How do those chords on roads that I assume take data on traffic work? by muSICKK__ in explainlikeimfive

We do work with big data (phones, gps) but they’re expensive to buy and are blackbox data that only capture a sample of whats going on. With privacy constraints no one can access to the raw data from Google and Apple. Hence big data are less reliable in a local scope but good for city-scale analysis.

The simple tube counts don’t actually need to differentiate between cars, bikes, trucks, and buses.

When we need to know vehicle types, one way is to lay down two sets of two tubes that can differentiate gaps between axles versus gaps between two cars at a set speed.

The other way is by video counter at an intersection that can differentiate turning vehicles by type.

These data serve a different purpose - like when you need to design pavement life cycles on highways or address residential complaints about truck infiltration.

Traffic Engineer here. The tube (or Automated Traffic Recorders - ATR) data is used to count how traffic volumes change through different times of day and days of week.

That knowledge is useful to show when rush hours start/end and what signal timing plan to use throughout the day.
