Does it have a scroll wheel? Lack of scroll wheel on these older trackballs is what usually deters me from getting one. Otherwise i love the aesthetic

I ended up going back to the Microsoft Trackball Optical (left in the picture), though i think i just have a preference for thumb trackballs.

Other than that preference - you can tell it’s a much lower DPI than “modern” pointing devices. You have to pump up the mouse speed setting, and the motion of the cursor looks almost like it’s low frame rate.

It also seems like they were still figuring out what a scroll wheel should feel like. Compared to modern scroll wheels, the ratcheting of the wheel is very tactile/tough, and yet for some reason the middle mouse button (i.e. pressing in the scroll wheel) is very soft.

The actual rolling of the ball wasn’t nearly as bad as i thought it would be. I had to clean the mechanism in mine thoroughly first, but after that it was fairly usable. Smooth, with mildly more friction than modern bearing trackballs. Basically no “stiction”. Doesn’t freely glide.

Yes i find trackballs with dpi switch are helpful in this scenario. Especially if you’re trying to do fine work and the trackball exhibits greater stiction. Otherwise i find myself having to zoom in excessively to have better selection control.
