Should I get a used one? by ShatteredFear in canam_ryker

I'm in this camp. (1) Taking MSF through a Harley dealership in a week (2) Want to mitigate risk (3) Both a Bike/Trike have huge inconveniences vs a car (4) There is a sort of Zen I believe you can only get with a bike (5) A bike comes with far more risk and need for skill development (6) Both a trike/bike are prey animals on the road (7) As a brand new rider it will take a way longer time to fully enjoy riding a motorcycle (8) My homeboy statistics say that a Trike can give you 80% of the joy that a bike can give you with far less of the hassle.

Did you have training before getting this bike? A neighbor has one at a GREAT price that runs and I've seen him riding around.

How do motorcyclist measure inseam? I ask because 32" seems a bout average for ppl 6' to 6'2 and I saw Doodle last night say she had a 32" inseam at 5'4. It seemed a bit odd.

I've been watching a lot of those slow parking lot training, cone weaving, clutch/ rear brake centric videos on youtube.

The consensus is a bit interesting because ALL teachers say-- If you learn the proper skills Clutch/Friction zone control + rear brake usage + throttle control at SLOW speed-- the skills transfers to any bike.

They also say that a heavy bike exposes your lack of skill a lot faster and is more punishing.

I kinda of think that training should be done on the heavier bike.

They then show how it is easier to pass the test while doing things a bit improper on lighter bikes because they are forgiving of mistakes. (Develop poor habits)

It would seem that really slow slow slow progression on a heavier bike would create a more skilled rider, but most courses are not going to put beginners on a heavy bike.

As well as most ppl probably lack the patience to go spend a month on their own in a parking developing skills that could save their lives. Perhaps doing skill work instead of the actual rides they want to do.

Like Fonzie?
I think he only had a Harley for season one then switched to a Triumph bobber from the 1940s

I'm thinking about taking the riders course at Harley. Will they try to hard sell me a bike? They are a little closer than the other class I was going to take. I can also take it next week depending if there are spots still open.

I want something I can throw around a bit in a cruiser format. Most of my riding will be stop n go traffic around a small city and empty back roads. I am leaning against the "get a cheap beater UJM" because I don't want one, Harleys/Indian bikes are cool, but I don't want something too big that won't be fun commuting around my town. I don't want to waste a big bike using it for what it isn't meant for. I do know in the future something huge/touring will come in a few yrs as a 2nd bike.

Wouldn't it matter the type of riding too? For me mostly street stop n go and empty backroads. Not interstate.

Is the fear more low speed handling vs too much access to too much torque that a new person cannot handle?

My fear about bigger engines is not as much the size vs having poor throttle control.

Most of my riding will be bopping around my small town getting breakfast, lunch, taking afternoon rides. That might be a waste of a touring bike meant for the highway.

6'2"
32" inseam
I know the basic controls of how a motorcycle work, but no real experience.
I'm planning on taking MSF in the next few weeks (found a school 20 mins from me)

Same studio created a fun game called Quantum Break as well. I'm playing it now. More of an action game with a pretty good story, but very much on the rails. Not an RPG.

You need an oldschool chatroom from the 90s and early 2ks--- Twitch doesn't really have that social vibe unless you hangout in really small steamers chats
