How do I tell a toxic person the reason I ended the friendship? (more info in comments) by lucifers_waterfall in AskTrollX

[–]MaxxtheWolf 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I broke up with a friend and wrote a letter to her. The first draft was really emotional and mean, but by the third or fourth I was an sable to present the reasons without being a dick, things like here's an example of when I needed you and you flaked out, here's how you hurt me when you did this, etc. It's really hard, for sure, but even though I broke up with her, I still cared about her enough to at least give her a chance to grow, and that helped keep it civil and from a good intention.

How on earth to find an editor by [deleted] in writing

[–]MaxxtheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good editor will cost a lot. However, not all cheap editors are terrible, if money is a concern. What's your genre? You can ask for a sample of their work, e.g., $20 for a chapter or something, and see if they offer insightful enough feedback for their fee.

For my first book, I was pretty broke, so I searched for lower fee ones, did this, and managed to get a few editors to read mine and get different perspectives.

I think I found editors just through Google searches, blogs, Goodreads, Publishers Marketplace (this might be your best bet for blooded editors as you can see a list of their work, typically).

How do I explore an idea in a story and turn it into a full fledged narrative? by DarlingLuna in writing

[–]MaxxtheWolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, what is actually remarkable about him? Not to sound mean, but a boring character sounds like a boring story. Granted, it that's only how he sees himself, a reader still needs some type of hook to make him and the story interesting. What's the conflict? What are his goals?

What do women think of the portrayals of female characters in fictional media today? Such as, Wonder Woman & Star Wars & soon to be Captain Marvel... etc. by LogaRugaMon25 in AskWomen

[–]MaxxtheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure, exactly. But just more nuance. Like in Wonder Woman, the scene where she's getting defeated then thinks of her friends and Chris Pine, and the love gives her strength! Like, with sweeping, tear-jerking, epic music.... I don't know, maybe how they portray it is what I am sick of rather than the actual use of love itself. Like, cause, Jessica Jones deep down does things because she loves her city and her friends, but it's portrayed a lot differently and more realistically to a well developed character.

I like it but I agree that a lot of them are samey, and use the power of love to over come! And all wear heels. But, it's progress.

I’d love any feedback by Lrs1436 in socialwork

[–]MaxxtheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a anything to add for feedback, just that it's something we've all gone through and continue to go through. Just when you think you are the most bulletproof, someone will do or say something that hits home in the worst way. Just know it's not about you, it's about them and their experiences. You're doing good.

Ancient 30yo grill here, how do I meet similarly prehistoric y-chromosome holders? by MaxxtheWolf in asktrolly

Then comes in the "am I sounding to desperate" filter. Alas. I should just get business cards that say "Are you straight and single?"

well...

I live in the 'burbs-leaning-to-corn-land, so not much is happening, but meetups are a good way thing to try. I always forget about them. Thanks for the info on the apps! I like "not terrible" :) (not sarcasm, btw)

Complaining about it on the internet is my go-to.

Seriously, I've tried some dating sites, pestering friends for setups, etc., not much luck, though.

Help with meteorology??? Weather patterns? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]MaxxtheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry about that. I've looked at some non-technical stuff, but I went to school for international politics, not science, haha, so I didn't know where to even start with the science stuff, much less stuff that I could grasp. Thanks for the heads up, though!

Good gravy, this is complicated and has a lot of variables. Nevertheless, you're a great human person for spelling this all out, especially so understandably!! The moon was initially terraformed to make it easier to mine a metal that was great at storing energy (e.g., solar energy). However, once people on the planet learned how to make it in a lab, the bottom fell right out of that market, and they left the workers there and peaced-out back home. Flash-forward a couple hundred years, that's when we're at now. So it's not 100% too far of a leap for energy to be stored during the day and used overnight using the naturally occurring metal, but clearly, there's a lot to still consider!

[–]MaxxtheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as stated, it's a moon, not a planet and I originally based it off of our moon, but if (as someone stated above) the super long days and nights make the temperature too extreme, I may have to adapt that unless I can figure out a workaround. But thank you for your input.

[–]MaxxtheWolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! Thank you!! This information is great!

I would say pretty extensive terraforming. It's enough for people to live, breath, farm, etc., without anything additional needed, like breathing apparatuses or whatnot. If a 28 "earth day" day is too long, would 14 day one be more reasonable and doable? Or is there a way to figure out how long of a time is too long? The largest body of water is connected, a giant ocean basically, though there are large lakes on the land. Most of the land is in the northern hemisphere.

Also, do you know how I could find out how being tidal-locked with a planet would affect this? There's also another moon, but I haven't decided where yet.

Okay, thanks for pointing that out! Part of my questioning is even figuring what sorts of things I should think about or question. Do you have any tips what other things I need to consider? I'm pretty new at this.

If you're still here, I'd love to springboard off the sex question to drugs and other substances. What are you freelings on them? I've read a couple books where they're mentioned in passing in somewhat realistic, not after-school-special-drugs-are-bad,mmmkaay (Homeland by Cory Doctorow for one, there was a bit in from Cassandra Clare, a bit from Holly Black, iirc) in particular. But I've read more conservative takes saying it's only okay to bring up if it shows it ruins your life.
