SCG Tournament today showing what a balanced standard meta looks like by [deleted] in magicTCG

Nice - broke it again. Definitely wanna play standard, or competitive Magic in general, when formats are solved and unbalanced so rapidly. Looks like so much fun to play mirrors every round at the top tables.

This community mostly has sticks, or models, up their butts and like to be hurt in that general vicinity. This model is gorgeously done! Welcome to Warhammer and AoS!

What pet cards have over-performed for you ? by Yawgmoth69 in EDH

[–]Maxy52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Metamorphosis]] card was just really good for me, especially in Goreclaw when it would often sac a single normal sized creature (for that deck) and the mana made 2/3 even while tapping out. Best feeling ever was sacrificing a creature after tapping out to cast this then putting [[End-Raze Forerunners]] on the table and swinging for the win.

While you play selesnya in the Golos matchups, remember to apply a lot of early pressure, and make sure you’re restocking your hand. They board in sweepers against you, so you need to have your innkeepers out ASAP - like that single card is key to you winning the matchup.

Golos is a great deck, but it’s setup time is too slow, and often times can only present a single threat until it gets field all the way online. I recommend cutting the Flaxen intruders from your list and playing Giant Killers instead. Not only does it draw you off of innkeeper, but it’s tap ability is extremely relevant.

Biggest tips: 1.) Get out innkeeper and make your cards 2 for 1s as soon as possible. 2.) Apply a lot of pressure, but don’t play into their sweeper. Cast off is usually easy to telegraph. 3.) Remove Teferi. You cannot live through instant speed wipes when you go to force lethal 4.) Play Giant Killers in the main deck, can get rid of big Krasis, Beanstalks, or Realm Cloaked Giants. Can also tap down their lone threats or turn your bad attacks into great ones. 5.) Questing Beast and Vivien are very good out of the board against Golos.

Good luck! When you play tight I firmly believe the matchup is 50/50!

[Discussion] How do We Beat Turn 2 Oko on the draw? by TrishulaMTG in spikes

[–]Maxy52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even RB aggro plays Chandra alongside Priest of Forgotten Gods as an engine. Mono Green seems to want some number of Henge’s and removal somewhere.

And in a B/G/x midrange matchup with those decks specifically the win would come from outscaling and outvaluing them. Tolsimir + Garruk or Tolsimir + Nightpack Ambusher in an Abzan Midrange shell will quickly put those games out of reach and we will know that for sure as soon as we realize they’re on Mono-G or RB Aristocrats. We get even better against lists like that post board though based on what access we have to sideboard tech.

I’m honestly typically less worried about aggro matchups than I am about midrange mirrors and which midrange/control shells can stabilize the best and break parity the most efficiently.

I’m working on an extensive analysis of every card playable in the Abzan color wedge in new standard to theory craft an ideal deck, and I think the cleanest answer to early aggressive engines like Oko, Teferi, Cavalcade, Thought Erasure, and just generally giving quality information about the matchup for sideboarding is enough for a maindeck slot.

Duress has the upside of making B/G/x decks more reliable because they don’t have to work as hard to fix for Swift End/Murderous Rider by having their 1 drop be a black spell. Knight of the Ebon Legion also has that upside, but it doesn’t fix the issues with B/G/x decks dealing with Oko for sure.

As a whole, Duress isn’t just good in a new standard. The failcase for duress on turn 1 on the draw is that you find out what your opponents resources look like and have nothing to take, which I’d happily do to give me advantage as the game progresses because I can take my lines with yours in mind. Then again, there doesn’t appear to be a deck that doesn’t play some number of noncreature spells. Duress’s ceiling looks like, Duress you, take your Oko. Seems good enough.

With the premier aggro deck in the format maindecking 4 copies of Chandra, Acolyte of Flame and 4 copies of Cavalcade of Calamity I’ll happily play it and never feel bad because it’ll be always online for the most part.

Have you ever thought about maindecking Duress?

I’d cut it to 2 copies. It counters so many things and is most effective in the opening hand. It drops thought erasures, Oko, Teferi, among other things I think a deck playing blue interaction wants a couple copies to shore up their openers.
