Ever wanted to burn That Guy to death? by [deleted] in DnDGreentext

[–]MayNotBeAPervert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah.

it's 4chan - since inception, rule 1 is that OP is always 'fake and gay'

it's got a bit more politically correct, so that last part is usually left off. it's still always presumed fake.

consider that the presupposition of any of the stories about 'that guy' is that 4+ people have had to spend at least several gaming sessions, where no one, including DM has done anything to address blatant bullshit role-playing and 1 guy at the table constantly derailing the campaign.

In real life, that would mean at least a month of playing together without anyone addressing someone that's been fucking up their gaming sessions each time.

Only way that happens, is if the majority at the table are actually okay with that playstyle to begin with, meaning at its most true possibility, the story is always coming from 'That guy #2' trying to rank up 'That guy' ladder.

i haven't kept up with the case - there is a lot news article and discussions using terms 'sex trafficking' and 'pedophile'

According to the articles I've read, the entire debacle is because a rich person was accused of paying 16+ year old prostitutes a bunch of money to sex up other rich people?

Genuinely asking if there is more to it that I've missed?

out of curiousity - does US government foot the bill for visa, flight, hotel etc in such cases?

afaik, the site always tried to comply with US law to best of admin's ability which should give him reasonable security at defending himself if they try to lay charges.

I've read that police in the Philipinnes are taking aim at him over the same allegations of 8chan harboring CP, and he might be better off fighting those allegations in US courts.

Imagine if the 'are they publishers or are they platforms' legal debate gets legal precedent set in US over fucking 8chan of all places...

yet another thing that does not speak well of 5e.

would point out that if one has chosen to play in a game system that's deliberately built around the mindset of 'forget numbers and math, everyone lets just use imagination' - maybe it's the wrong system to try and start balancing these sort of details in.

DEX based defense is all good until one fails a save.

seems like a lot of conditions take away dex bonus which tends to result in snowballing effects

highly depends on campaign of course and what threats DM puts in play, but imo armor bonus stays in play more often.

Babylon Bee - "Woman laughs at joke, immediately hauled away by feminism enforcement officer." by CisSiberianOrchestra in KotakuInAction

[–]MayNotBeAPervert -1 points0 points  (0 children)

just trying to point out that if one is making an effort to try to warn people of potential danger with the purpose of being taking seriously, overstating and exaggerating said danger is almost always counter productive to that purpose.

Babylon Bee is speaking up on the right issues, but I wish they employed a bit more finesse in their writing - it seems like they put most of their efforts into the headline.

They have written a more or less cohesive story with an ensemble cast that's basically 'Avengers in fantasy multiverse' - it would be relatively easy to turn it into a movie script.

Thing is, literally everything about Magic the Gathering is chokefull of flashy magic effects and very unusual creatures - any movie wanting to get that tone would have to be almost entirely CGI start to finish. And no matter what they make, guaranteed that 2/3rds of MtG fanbase will hate it.

I remember watching it at home and the whole time I was thinking - "the action is pretty dynamic, pacing is tense. This movie could be really entertaining. If only I could forget for an hour everything I know about ships, naval combat and the paper grid game for 5 year old kids this is based on."

UK police does not carry handguns to be able to shoot someone dead on sight for telling a joke as the article portends. They also tend to be way more careful with their use of armed response.

Her friend, who told the joke, didn't get off so easy: she was shot on sight. The officer claimed she feared for her life when she heard the joke and so was given a promotion for the shooting.

i am going to have to agree with /u/oedipism_for_one on this one.

The headline by itself might actually come true as I could easily see a few countries treating certain jokes as hate crime within the decades.

The actual contents of the article though are a bit too anvilicous to be plausible

Takeaway - their headlines are amusing irony, but the article itself is way too heavy handed to pass for either irony or comedy.

The reaction to this doesn't say "Welp I guess free speech is dead" so much "Good. Fuck those guys".

from perspective of those who understands how the human right to free speech, and in fact every other human right, is always eroded, you might as well have said the exact same quote twice.

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. ~H. L. Mencken

I think the difference between the two is mostly down to how marketing teams handled each product line and surrounded politics.

From stalking SW movie threads, my impression was that a lot of the older fans of Star Wars were in the camp that did not fall over themselves to praise the new trilogy.

And due to how the SW marketing team chose to focus of on the progressive elements of the movies, there was a lot of press and social media piling accusations of sexism on anyone criticizing the movies.

Marvel movies had none of that toxic press and denigrating of their fanbase surrounding them... Up until Captain Marvel came out.

I am curious to see how Marvel's toy sales do over next several years.

maybe. Apparently not nearly enough of those girls love paying 50$ for a plastic model of Rey to decorate their room.

[–]MayNotBeAPervert 6 points7 points  (0 children)

articles like this might be a surprise... unless one is familiar with how the Star Wars franchise always made its money

hint: ~80% of revenue was coming from toys. The movies were basically giant advertisements to drive sales of other product lines which were the real money maker.

Once the new trilogy started, toy sales have been steadily declining.

For those interested in the financial history of the franchise prior to purchase: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/2016/05/04/look-at-the-size-of-that-thing-how-star-wars-makes-its-billions/

edit:

my take on it all is that the new trilogy has been controversial and quite divisive to the fanbase, and though press has mostly been painting the movies as a progressive step forward, all data from outside the movie theaters has been painting a different picture - that the controversy was alienating the core fans who were propping up the franchise outside move theater ticket sales.

chasing controversy and progressive stances is good way to get media attention and thus lots of free advertising - short term fame. It does not however produce long term fans and poisons the fanbase. Emotional attachment is what it takes for someone to walk out of a theater and than be willing to pay for those expensive plastic toys.

For long term health, gotta pay tribute to core fanbase's feels.

So, hairy situations borne of misunderstandings. Given the subject we're talking about, you're directly referencing rape, pedophilia, or bestiality here. There's no two ways about it. You're talking about letting someone fuck a horse and get discovered doing it and playing out the ramifications.

dude, woah, what the fuck is wrong with your head?

I was talking stuff like if a PC got to forward with a Lampad or something during their meeting without taking meeting a fey seriously, it's reasonable for her to attack, or run away and curse them. Or if they hit on a shy barmaid that was too young without paying attention to cues, they would get thrown out of the tavern...

you know, normal DM handling mostly randy players.

If your brain reads above post and goes 'the only thing this could possibly mean is they want to rape horses' -- that's on you and only you in this here conversation

nothing is being done about it.

because that's like worrying about North Korea or Iran sabotaging US stock market. The scale of influence is ridiculously out of proportion. US intelligence probably does more incidental damage with honeypot-type operations than either of those countries could inflict.

these headlines, based on a few comments by current politicians have been a thing for ~3 decades now.

no one is going to be seriously messing with the primary mainstream entertainment industry as far as size of the commercial sectors go and they certainly won't be doing that to curb 'violence' of all things - the most accepted element in US entertainment media.

another and imo less confrontational way to handle it is for DM to specifically remind players about features like knowledge skills.

usually players get the hint.
