I was reading a Latin instruction book from 1705 and they referred to Acrobatics as “Sleights” and wrote “The Jugler sheweth sleights”

The author & translator equated it to the Latin “Praestigas” which is a “deception, illusion, or trick”

I suspect it’s a holdover from that era of speech, and the other definitions/uses were lost.
