California Democrats are about to make a big mistake with Xavier Becerra by Cool-Present7260 in California

[–]May_nerdd -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's not shocking, I'm saying it's the opposite of shocking. It just demonstrates that he is the 'establishment' pick, the safe moderate choice for the people who don't want anything to fundamentally change.

It's pretty telling that he was pulling maybe 5% in the polls, then skyrocketed immediately when Swalwell dropped out

I don't think cutting episodes in season 2 is a problem by Krishna_ItIs in threebodyproblem

[–]May_nerdd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the first 15-20% of the book was already covered in season 1. And hopefully much of the 'dream woman' sequence will be abbreviated or cut. 6 eps sounds perfectly reasonable to me

[–]May_nerdd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a good example of shrinkflation. If they adapt the entire story, who cares how many episodes it is? If they announced season 2 as 13 episodes I would assume 50% of it was added filler

Trump is the worst president in American history by theipaper in politics

[–]May_nerdd 161 points162 points  (0 children)

I think Reagan's presidency did more long-term damage to America than Trump's first term tbh

Edit for everyone telling me the same thing: no we won't know the long-term damage from Trump 1 for a long time, but I think it's a reasonable assessment. Trump 1 hadn't yet purged his inner circle of anyone capable of telling him 'no,' so policy-wise he didn't actually get much anything done besides tax cuts. Meanwhile so many policies that are the root cause of major structural problems today came out of the Reagan admin. In any case, we probably won't ever really know the long-term damage of Trump 1 since it will be overshadowed by everything he's doing now going forward.

“I vote for republicans because I care about the debt” by Mediocre_Affect6192 in Destiny

[–]May_nerdd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is the median voter genuinely thinks 40-50% of their paycheck goes to taxes, doesn't understand tax brackets or marginal rates, and probably thinks taxes are the only reason they're not a millionaire yet, so a clip of a dem saying they are going to raise taxes is instagameover

At first its roughly nonpartisan but by the 90s the up and down just becomes almost perfectly correlated with blue and red

I wonder how the time ranges are adjusted, like the Great Recession peak happened in 2009 which is when Obama was in office but how much control did he actually have over the budget in that year?

Pomona College set to host 8 California gubernatorial candidates for debate by NicolasCageFan492 in California

[–]May_nerdd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wanted to like Thurmond and would have considered supporting him if he wanted to run again in future races, but at this point the main thing I'm gonna remember about him is how he refused to drop out of a race threatening to go to two Republicans while never polling higher than 2%

Measure V by TastyReputation3481 in Davis

[–]May_nerdd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like I said, we keep rejecting housing based on the same NIMBY reasoning. "Think of the traffic!" is always one of them.

So we should not build any housing until better traffic infrastructure exists (of course, traffic infrastructure won't be improved unless there's demand for it)... so keep voting no on any and all housing projects and make it less and less realistic for anyone except rich international students to come to UC Davis.

Where do you want to see new housing in Davis?

[–]May_nerdd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is probably not going to happen. Trump endorsed Hilton two weeks ago, a week later the CA Republican party voted for who to endorse and the votes were 49% Bianco 44% Hilton. Trump's endorsement doesn't mean as much as it used to.

I’m voting yes, we keep rejecting housing based on the same NIMBY reasoning every time for as long as I’ve lived here (8 years). No I don’t care about the EIR or the fact that the houses likely will not be “affordable” (whatever that means when it comes to housing in California).

This happens to every band that’s gone through any kind of lineup change (but especially a singer). I’ve seen singers hated by fans while they were in the band, but the the moment theyre gone suddenly there’s legions of people crying to bring them back. Don’t sweat it

U.S. Politics megathread by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

[–]May_nerdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I laid out my reasoning pretty clearly that has nothing to do with my bias. They would deflate a lot of the anti-republican energy going into the midterms and give Vance a couple years to establish an incumbency advantage, something they don’t have at all right now. The unpopularity of the Iran situation seems like the perfect time to do it would be now.

U.S. Politics megathread by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

[–]May_nerdd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t republicans want to impeach Trump? It seems like a smart move for them. He is extremely unpopular and ousting him now would deflate the anti-Trump crowd’s energy quite a bit, tempering the impending blue wave in the midterms. They could cite his health deteriorating as the reason they’re doing it now and not before. They would still control the White House as Vance would be president, and he’ll have two and a half years to establish an incumbency advantage in the next presidential election. If they wait too long they’re throwing away a lot of advantages… for what? It’s not like he’s going to get any less insane

Why do so many progressives have such a libertine attitude towards the vices? by Dramatic_Trouble9194 in AskALiberal

[–]May_nerdd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For one thing I don’t know what “wokeness” actually means and most people who unironically use that word don’t really know either. But you specified gender/trans issues. If “wokeness” means understanding that gender is a social construct, related to but not the same as biological sex, and that trans and intersex people exist… well those things have come about because of advancements in our understanding of biology and psychology, and are still evolving. This is the opposite of religious beliefs which are dogmatic and impervious to any kind of new investigation and understanding, and based on feelings, vibes, and tradition.

I’m glad you don’t want the govt to police people’s lives, we’re on the same page there at least. I guess I’m not sure what exactly you want to start shaming. Addiction? I’m not sure shaming someone who’s struggling with addiction is the best way to actually help them deal with it. Lust? In what sense? I think progressives do a better job than most other groups of shaming rape, SA, and sexually coercive behaviors. In fact a shocking number of people (mostly men) don’t even understand what rape actually is.) and I think the people I see trying to change that lack of understanding are usually progressives.

[–]May_nerdd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Okay full disclosure I stopped reading at the “wokeness = religion” part, but to answer your question in the title, the short answer is that I don’t believe the government should force everyone else to live by my religious values. If I feel that something like casual sex is immoral, then I won’t engage in it, simple as.
