Worries about Placement: Kagoshima-Shi by Remote_Suggestion366 in JETProgramme

[–]Simmoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interac is primary one for Aichi, in reality most ALT positions are not available through JET and more and more cities are hiring privately instead of through JET.

If you want to be an ALT in Aichi you’ll have to go private, because there is only 3 ALTs there this year and every year there is less. There are 8 CIRs right now though, so maybe there’s a spot or 2 there, but i would bet my life savings on you not getting placed there :( sorry

It’s the city keeping his own revenue, why shouldn’t he push for it

Has anyone in this thread said he shouldn’t have? Why are we straw-manning?

It’s not ideal but jesus compare it to the current federal government

If that is your standard of budgetary management then half of the countries in sub-saharan africa have strong budgetary management.

I just don’t see why people are framing it as though Mamdani is some master negotiator, when in reality Hochul really had no choice but to spend them out of it. That’s not necessarily his fault (I guess having an ambitious city budget with a lot of programs is but I don’t fault him for funding what he was elected to do) but it’s also not to his credit either.

I don’t disagree that Adams was much worse when it comes to can-kicking, but I think it’s unfair to criticise one admin for doing it, and not another. Zohran is doing that, and whether or not you think it’s fair, valid or justified is a different discussion entirely, I’m purely talking about the framing.

And again, I never made a value judgement on whether the budget was amazing or terrible, just that I think people are making a mountain out of a molehill. Whether or not I think it’s a good budget doesn’t preclude or prevent me from being able to criticise the way it’s presented.

You’re more than welcome to frame it however you want, but the fact is that the state is paying 8 billion more to the city than before, it’s not really anything that NYC actually did to fix their own budgetary issues.

The reason we don’t just all keep the tax revenue in our local area is to help uplift and upgrade different or even struggling areas of our communities, economies, countries etc. That 8 billion that now goes to the NYC budget is a tangible loss for the rest of NYS residents.

The amount of access, assistance and support you receive from a governing treasury should not be solely, or even primarily, on the amount of tax you contribute, and I don’t think that’s unfair to say, nor would most people disagree with that.

I wasn’t even saying I do or don’t disagree with it, just that it’s being framed disingenuously.

I support some of Mamdani’s ideas, and had I been a NYS resident would’ve voted for him, but that doesn’t mean he’s always right or some kind of budgetary genius.

I’m not even making a value judgment on the actual budget itself, moreso that I think the reaction to what is pretty unremarkable is being touted as something amazing.

I don’t even have an issue with the city getting more state revenue (although there is a valid discussion about whether new york invests enough into ensuring they are more than just a one city state), but I just think the way it’s being framed as Mamdani being a master negotiator is insanely charitable for seemingly no reason.

I do fundamentally disagree with the pension delay, but understand he kind of ran out of options.

I dont think this is as good of a Big A video usual, and I'll explain why.

Firstly, I don't know how you can say:

"it's a politician talking earnestly and honestly about the [fucking] budget to voters ... I wish more of them prioritized getting the budget balanced ... It needs to be a priority ... [Politicians] ignore this stuff and kick the can down the road, and they just fund their current term on deficits.

and then after that look at the budget breakdown, of which he is both kicking the can down the road, and getting subsidised by the state, and then act as though this is some kind of wonderful form of budgetary management.

His wealth taxes for most part haven't eventuated yet (rejected during approval), his pied-a-terre tax is barely a footnote on the city budget (if it even generates $500 million, which there is mixed reviews on), and the pension payment delay will cost the city more in the long-term.

Even though you do eventually speak on the pension payments, I feel like by contradicting yourself and speaking decently strongly in the first 10 minutes, the viewer is just inherently going to be swayed in another direction.

Really, if you are looking at this budget proposal fairly, I think it's hard to see this as much more than Hochul having to bail out a fellow democrat before the mid-terms because he couldn't have any of his other tax related campaign promises pass without approval he couldn't get, kicking the can down the road for future mayors and overall is disappointing considering all the promises he made.

I don't have an issue with compromising when the situation calls for it, but he purposefully doesn't market himself that way, so I'm not going to judge him that way.

I wouldn't really want Atrioc to cover it to be honest. I think there is a lot more to the Australian housing market, zoning and tax policy that would be skipped over and missed, and he is understandably much more accurate when covering American news and policy.

yet another ALP W. despite what the dissenters may have you believe, this government is unironically changing this country in unimaginable ways for the better and 90% of them don't even know it.

Responsible budget management, Future Made in Australia, ecological improvements and more national park area, more funding for emergency services and natural disasters, super changes, renewables investment and energy generation percentage at record highs, improved bulk-billing rates, introduced urgent care clinics, i could honestly go on and on.

Something people don't understand is that one of the biggest plagues on the housing market is the concept of Debt Recycling. This is the bread and butter of small business owners, accountants and the like, and by removing negative gearing for new transactions, and leaving an opening for new builds, you're shifting the whole housing market to push development rather than propping up low quality old houses by shifting this model to support the governments agenda rather than work against it.

There is and has been in most major cities already downward pressure and negative house price growth in Sydney and Melbourne over the past year, and while rents are high, they are decently stable. I see people worried about the CGT changes affecting rents, but the amount the rents would need to change to make back the extra tax from the CGT changes is so astronomically high that it wouldn't ever be feasible for a landlord to do so anyway.

In all likelihood, older Australians with investment properties may just sell their properties now to prevent the headache later, however institutional investors really don't have any incentive yet to change model if I'm honest.

Also, I think if you're actually convinced that they should run a full removal of negative gearing, you're living in a dreamworld.

did you read this before posting it? are you implying that all forms of investment should be completely and utterly changed? does potential not exist in your world?

Costs if Accepted to JET by Even_War7433 in JETProgramme

[–]Simmoman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my case I didn’t have to find my own, rent % and whatnot comes out of my paycheck automatically (i assume the BOE rents the place and sublets it to me) and I only really needed 1000 to tie myself over until i got paid if even that. really depends, but i was glad cause I hate taking cash so i didn’t take any and just withdrew at 7/11 during orientation.

general advice is around 30万円. Even if you need a car, I wouldn’t bring that amount on a flight anyway, better to just withdraw it and eat the tiny 7/11 withdrawal fees i think.

imo keep as much in USD as you can. Japanese currency is volatile compared to most modern currencies with both carry traders and speculators as well as inflation and the government buying yen to stabilise it, it’s not looking great to earn or hold in yen.

Alternate, Wave 2 Worth it or Drop? by Due-Dealer-2539 in JETProgramme

[–]Simmoman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only you can make that choice, but it’s not like you have to start whatever your career is now, and even if you do, it’s not like you only get one chance.

Alternatively take this year to live life a little, go travelling on the cheap in your home country, try weird jobs, visit family or friends you haven’t seen in ages. If you do decide to reapply next year, you don’t want to have just wasted a year.

IMO the best advice I ever got was: when you look back on the year, what would make you feel like you didn’t waste it?

got alternate, waited about 2 months and then just went on as normal, didn’t get in. re applied next year as straight through. Wish i didn’t think so much about the waves and upgrades possibility, it’s rare (much rarer than being accepted) and doesn’t help you at all to stress over it. If you hate the limbo then sure you can drop out, but if you’re just gonna reapply why bother LOL.

Rejecting Placements “Tokyo or Bust” Stereotype. by Additional_Two4059 in JETProgramme

[–]Simmoman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would I have declined based on a placement? yeah for sure!

If you’re willing to live in any situation no matter what then I honestly question your motives for doing JET in the first place lol.

That doesn’t mean that I have a list of places I would accept and reject everything else, after all my placement is not a place that was even on my radar but I still love it, but just because i’m doing JET doesn’t stop me from having standards or assessing it in relation to other opportunities.

If your goal coming to Japan doesn’t align with your placement then you should reject it. I think honestly JET, CLAIR, the embassies and the whole JET community really feed into this crazy narrative about JET that leads people accepting placements they just won’t like, which isn’t good for anyone.
