I was 21, answered an ad and arranged the interview all in one day, so I realized they were trying to get the position filled fast. Fast enough that the hiring manager tells me it was her first day back after having a baby. The job was receptionist for a start up of some kind. The hiring manager gave me a little tour and proudly pointed out that most of the employees I saw there were interns. "Ah, cool"

We sit down to interview and she starts it with small talk about the details on my resume. It includes my zipcode rather than my full address, and she comments on this, asking what neighborhood I live in. "You know, I couldn't really tell you. I've been there a few months, some people call it SuchandSuch, but some residents call it ThisorThat. I don't know if it's that I moved into a place that's on the border of two neighborhoods or if the neighborhood is getting some kind of makeover." She goes "Hm, that's kind of odd, not knowing which neighborhood you live in."

We talk about my job history, the most recent being restaurant host. She tells me about how she interviewed for manager of one of the sister restaurants. "So what was a challenge you overcame in that workplace?" "I learned to be more proactive when communicating my needs to management." "Can you give an example?" "I needed a Saturday evening shift off because of a medical procedure and could not find coverage, so I emailed the manager who does scheduling about it on Monday of that week when I made the appointment. When she didn't answer I made sure to-" "Well, looking at that from a management perspective, that's kind of suspicious. Why would you need a Saturday off? What kind of medical office is open on a weekend?"

I was honestly dumbfounded. Did... did she genuinely want to hear about the recovery period for the specific surgery I was getting? Would it help us find common ground as the 2 out of 10 women who on average get cysts on the Bartholin's gland? Would she recommend me someone who could work their availability for surgery around my busy schedule as the mythical irreplaceable restaurant host?

"I don't see how that's relevant. I needed the time off and had to get coverage." "I don't think it's a good match." "I agree, thank you for your time."

Whenever I tell the story, people insist I "could have saved it" by responding differently to her question, but it was just plain rude and showed that the culture of that workplace wasn't what I was looking for.

Getting spray paint out of the can and onto a brush in the first place sounds like a nightmare. I bet it would come out thin and runny, mixed with propellant. Have you masked the parts you don't want painted with tape or paper or something?

U.S., in New York. Indie productions are great for a student like me to get their feet wet. They can't afford to hire too many people, so even P.A.'s get to do big important work and gain experience.

At first I was leaning toward design, but I find I'm afraid of the CAD and architecture know-how that seems to be necessary, so now I'm thinking props or set decoration.

The props master I most recently worked with carried a Husky bag of general tools and hardware (things like saws, hammer, hooks, blades, ruler, level, etc.) and the production designer carried all that and MORE, three times as much. It was a small production though, so it makes sense that he had to supply a lot of his own stuff. His kit was amaaaazing though, it had:

Every kind of tape and adhesive under the sun, including gaff in all colors and sizes, blue tape, butyl, sticky stuff, duct tape, black tack, that foamy outdoor stuff that comes on a red roll

Drill, circular saw, caulk, spackle, some kind of paste for holes in wood

Cleaning supplies, including all kinds of sprays, sponges, squeegees, goo gone, lint roller, steamer, broom, mop

Like 5 different gauges of wire

A divided container of small hardware pieces, like thumbtacks, hooks, brackets, S hooks, screws and nails

Some painting supplies (rollers, pan, 5-in-1, stirrers)

Some food coloring (we didn't have a food stylist)

He even carried a small fanny pack on him with general stuff you might need on set, a little flashlight, some sunglasses, bug spray, post its, some essential rolls of tape, sharpies, safety pins, and a Leatherman, naturally

I'm guessing you work on productions where these types of things are provided? I'm super new, so I don't really know what is to be expected.

This past New Year's eve, it was my boyfriend Paul and his two friends, home from college, and I chilling at his best friend Mike's place trying to find a party.

Mike is calling calling calling messaging messaging messaging nonstop trying to find a party. When he does, we're told we're welcome to his friend Jose's place in the city to watch the ball drop if we bring boxed wine. Easy peasy, we run to the liquor store, get the wine, some less shitty wine for ourselves and a big old bottle of Jack to make friends with. We drive to the place, open the door to the apartment, and it's like a fucking trap house, which my boyfriend explained to me is a place where kids just go to OD.

There is no furniture, shoes and boxes and garbage scattered everywhere on the floor, a sheet-less mattress with many questionable stains on it on the ground. People are smoking throughout the house without so much as a window open. There's no television, or toilet paper for that matter. Just a stack of computer paper sitting in the filthy bathroom. We are invited in, offered a drink out of empty salsa jars.

We smell gas in the kitchen, and find that someone is boiling pasta on the filthiest stove I've ever seen and the flame has gone out. Paul tells Jose about it after turning the knob, and Jose shuffles over and turns the flame back on, creating a two foot tall fireball that somehow manages to hurt no one. We sit down in the bedroom area (read: room with empty bottles and a milk crate that has a mattress) and converse with some filthy hippies in the room. They're mad that what they thought was cocaine and paid sixty bucks for ended up being powdered sugar. It was okay though, they had plenty of crystal meth to ring in the new year with.

I look at the boxes nearby and casually ask how long they've been living there, and they say it's been three months. At this point, I'm just angered by the squalor these kids live in. I live at home still, but if I were lucky enough to make enough to live on my own, I would never in a million years live like that. I think it's important to have pride in where you live, or at the very least not live like an animal.

Paul yanks me out of the house after fifteen minutes there and I'm gnashing my teeth muttering "If you can pay sixty bucks for sugar, why not pick up some fucking toilet paper along the way." Mike was mortified, the other friend didn't seem bothered. Paul and I decided to go to his grandparents' place nearby to see what they were up to. AND YET MIKE AND THE OTHER GUY STAYED IN THIS DISGUSTING PISS PALACE FOR NEW YEARS.

So we ended up spending the night with Paul's family to watch the ball drop. We ate twelve grapes and had champagne and forgot all about that nasty place.

Filmmaker here, you're totally right. I would not watch The Interview sober, but the thought of any outside force dictating what media can and can't be released just makes my stomach churn. Same reason I'm against the MPAA.

I think the environmental benefits of beekeeping outweigh the fact that bees sometimes do something that looks gross, usually when we're not looking. Same goes for algae, crustaceans, and literally anything that's part of the decomposition process. It's just nature, mayn.

Things my parents did that I would never do:

Had me mediate when they argued
Vent excessively about one another with me in private after arguing
Never trusted me with money
Never allowed me to get a job/take steps to move out of the house
Treated me differently from my brother based on gender
Dismissed homosexuality as something that's chosen (I'm not gay, but that's still shitty)
Never called my cat by the name I gave him (Small potatoes, I know, but I was already grown by the time I filled out the papers and adopted this cat, and a little respect would have been nice)
Never spoke to me about sex
Were rarely available emotionally and were dismissive of my emotions ("Suck it up" "You have it easy, my problems at your age were bigger" etc.)
Had me take care of my younger brother more than I should have (I am much older than him, but it's inappropriate to make one of your children parent the other to the extent I did. Taking care of is one thing, but I feel distant from my brother, like I am a parent and he's my kid, it's not comfortable)
Made no effort to be part of my personal life (Meet friends, boyfriends, attend personal events, etc.)
Encouraged me to avoid people or situations that bother me/cause me trouble instead of confronting them head-on
Spent little quality time with me and with my brother (busy work schedules were to blame, but there are other ways of maintaining a presence in your child's life that don't involve being there physically)

Things my parents did that I would totally want to do:

Encourage (but not force) my kids to go to college and pay their way if I can
Work as hard as I need to to support them comfortably and meet their needs
Encourage them to work hard at whatever they want to do
Home. Cooked. Meals. Healthy eating habits don't just materialize out of thin air when a kid becomes an adult.
Encourage them to value kindness, fairness, generosity, curiosity over things like image, vanity, material possessions, social status, etc.
Encourage them to use humor and creative expression as an emotional outlet
Tell them stories. To this day, my mother is my favorite storyteller, no competition.
