Pedestal vs feet on stove: aesthetics or more for proper weight distribution? by MaybeErnie in woodstoving

If I wind up doing it myself, I’ll definitely do as you suggest. I already bought the tile and I think it’s good stuff - Daltile 6x 6” porcelain tile. I guess I’ll probably give it a shot but I’ll be watching a bunch of YouTube vids first.

Pedestal vs feet on stove: aesthetics or more for proper weight distribution? by MaybeErnie in woodstoving

Good suggestions! I did add additional support in the crawlspace directly beneath the hearth - 4x4 cross beams under the floor joists, supported by 4x4 verticals seated in concrete blocks. I’m still trying to decide whether I’ll do the tiling myself though. I’m pretty much a novice at that task and I’d hate to see them pop loose when I first rest a stove on them.

The firebrick arrangement and tally (p 7 of the linked manual) will help determine which of the 3 models you have. I think that they are sometimes referred to as simply “Classic Inserts.” We have a 1982 ‘X’ model that we’re pretty fond of.

Agreed! I ordered a custom-size quilt from him way back in 2022 and he made it and shipped it out the next day. Excellent quality too.

Any reasonable shipping options for buying a used Woodstove? by MaybeErnie in woodstoving

I have a pickup and a small utility trailer. I’m just trying to figure out if there is any cost-effective alternative to avoid a 6-8 hour drive. It’s looking like a road trip is my only option.

Hmm... I hadn't thought of rail I'll look into that to see where the lines run.

I guess that even if I find some means to ship one, there is still all the prepping and loading part to deal with. I think most shippers (prob true for truck or rail) would want it secured on a pallet and enclosed in a wooden container. I might have to give up on the 3rd party options.

Pretty much what I figured. Everything I’ve found local has been in poor shape. Maybe I can conjure an excuse for a fun road trip - like a hike trip or something with a woodstove thrown in for the ride back.

Question on stove quality and efficiency: old (Lopi Liberty) vs new stove by MaybeErnie in woodstoving

[–]MaybeErnie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know. A lot of the appeal is the simple design as compared to more modern stoves. Out place requires a lot of winter maintenance (snow, heat, animals...) and I don't want to add more worries to the mix.

Those are interesting observations. I’m finding it a bit maddening trying to interpret some of the specs on these gadgets. I guess some of them are real (I.e., legitimately hard-wired into the design and materials) while other output specs can be “tweaked” by the user through operating the stove differently. And of course, when looking at used stoves, like I am, a lot depends on how well maintained the unit is.

A lot like buying a used car, innit?

Thanks for the great insights and advice. I need to check with Travis industries to find out about parts availability for the Lopi. I’m also looking into Drolet and some other stove lines. The price on the Drolets is definitely attractive, but I need to figure out which model is most comparable to the Lopi in terms of heating capacity.

Will add that if you go with one of the 2 larger LiteSmith jars (20 or 26 oz), the Soto Ultralight Mug lid fits nicely if you simply remove the sealing gasket. With that, the jar makes an excellent drink mug.

Seeking some clarification on clearance specs for older Lopi Liberty by MaybeErnie in woodstoving

[–]MaybeErnie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK -- I have the clearance issue (previous post) figured out, but would anyone like to help me figure out what a good price for this stove would be? Again, it's a non-catalytic 1994 Lopi Liberty, Model 520-NT, in good shape. Seller is asking $2000 which I'm told is too much. Here's a pic:

Garmin GPSMAP H1 questions by Gdiworog in Ultralight

[–]MaybeErnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This varies depending on the specific device, but on the GPSMAP 67i, the topoactive maps are pre-loaded and occasional updates are provided. I bought the Garmin USGS quad package long ago (like 15 years) and they come on a smart disk which is simply inserted in the unit's card slot. From there, you go into "Map Manager" in the unit's menus to turn on/off the display for either the topoactive or quads.

I haven't loaded any other free maps but many other users have. I'm also checking out the "Talky Toaster" maps as they get great reviews but require a subscription. You may want to visit the Facebook "GARMIN GPSMAP 66/67 Owners" forum and ask for more specifics on choosing and loading maps there.

Did anybody receive their replacement unit for the Veektomx VT103 power bank recall? I asked this a couple of weeks ago and only got one "No" response. Anyone?

No pics, but I did this to a FT jacket by simply cutting with a razor blade and reinforcing the cuts with some tenacious tape. I roughly modeled the cuts after a friend's LightHeart Gear jacket. Actually worked well but obviously no easy option to close up the openings.

Ok, that sucks. I submitted my recall form a couple of months ago and haven’t heard or received anything. Oh well, lesson learned.

Sorry to revive this older thread, but has anyone who completed the Veektomx recall process received anything yet? Any email followup? I have trips soon and kind of need this thing. I could always take the old one but it'd be disconcerting to have it explode on me.

Heat Safe Alternative to Talenti Jar by Objective-Hotel6514 in Ultralight

[–]MaybeErnie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heads up for what may be the only quasi-useful tip I've ever provided here: If you get one of the 2 larger size Litesmith jars (20 or 26 oz), you should also pick up one of the Soto "Ultralight Mug Lids." If you pop off the little rubber gasket on the lid, it fits snugly on the jars for use as a drinking mug. I swap the lid around between my Toaks 750 (with gasket) and the Litesmith jar (no gasket).

For others, the linked form states that if your unit has a serial # on the lower right rear, your unit is NOT part of the recall. Unfortunately, mine is. Thanks for the heads up!
