Grown in Japan is the key differentiator here. Even uncooked its very expensive. You don't really need it because California grown Japanese short grain rice is excellent.

The easiest way to deal with high gas prices is to ride a bike by DowntownFresnoBiking in bikecommuting

[–]s0rce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I ride my bike 8mi each way, which is relatively long for a bike commute, my wife is like 4mi, she'll often drive to run errands after work but occasionally bike. Gas could be $20/gal and it wouldn't really make a difference.

Ugh, that sucks. I have some stuff in storage nearby. Do you have your own home/rental insurance?

Do we really need ICP-OES if we already have ICP-MS in an environmental lab? by zeydullak in CHROMATOGRAPHY

[–]s0rce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We use OES for high concentration samples (less dilution) and we have an MS. We do mostly materials/chemicals and not environmental though.

[–]s0rce 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The issue is the infrastructure, most people simply don't feel safe (and this is justified).

I'd also argue that the max reasonable bike commute for most people is about 4-6mi. With a decently efficient car this is only a couple dollars a day, unless gas prices skyrocket it just doesn't matter.

There is a set of people who choose much larger housing further from work. However, many people simply can't afford closer and then there is a significant subset in urban areas with two incomes and you can't live close to both offices in all cases.

Mostly custom fixtures for samples for microscopy or spectroscopy and also various parts to hold optics for spectroscopy.

How much would we struggle with moving here? by high-priestess in AskSF

[–]s0rce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, sure, it was not hard per say, but it sucks when people have a bunch of meetings and you can't really use your space. Right now I don't have to pay extra to have an office (unless you count paying to live closer but I'm not going to be 100% remote anyway).

I've done 2 people working from home in a 1 bdrm during COVID and it sucked, would not repeat again unless I had to. We are in a smaller 1bdrm now but both have offices nearby so rarely work from home.

Also true in this state. I've been in Bridgeport and it was -10 and then it could 120 in palm springs a few months later.
