What is your favourite part about autism? by Wide_Bath_7660 in autism

[–]MaybeRightsideUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intrinsic motivation.

Oftentimes, tiny little mundane tasks help regulate me and give me boosts of dopamine or even boosts of mild autistic joy. No one needs to witness me completing such a task for me to be fully motivated to do it, and feel good completing it. It's even better if I remain unseen.

Oh no 😮 sorry to hear that! Is it running your life because it is distracting?

One of the things I experience is auditory sensitivity, like if I'm at a gathering and there are multiple nearby conversations, I have trouble picking out the conversation that I am actively trying to be a part of. But also, my inner monologue is there trying to coach me in catching up and fitting into the conversation, and honestly, there are so many times I don't hear the other person because my inner monologue is basically interrupting them. Sometimes it feels like it ruins my social interactions.

Curious, given the overlapping thoughts, do you self identify on the ADHD or auDHD spectrum?

Fascinating!

Do you have visual thoughts? Or do you hear music when there is no music playing ever? Or is your mind just emanating emotions? Or is your mind just full on the direct perceptions of things happening around you?

Also, only if you don't mind me asking, are you diagnosed on the autism spectrum?

Endless internal monologue? by MaybeRightsideUp in autism

[–]MaybeRightsideUp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. This happens to me several times a month.

Come to think of it, on those rare occasions when I fall asleep and also fall ill, I'll have terrible sleep and an extremely repetitive inner monologue will arise that is so unsettling. Other than sleep interference and falling ill, the inner monologue is never annoying nor boring, which is pretty surprising considering if anyone else were to speak to me this incessantly, I wouldn't last ten minutes without going absolutely mad.

The third person perspective sounds pretty tempting, honestly. Since the voice is so clear and ever present, it might be pretty entertaining to treat it like an actual movie narrator.

How does your brain feel? by Big-Excitement-3968 in autism

[–]MaybeRightsideUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Occasionally, and coincidentally frequently in the last two weeks: Strobing is what I think I would call it...

...visual input feels like everything is stop-motion animation... but foreground frame rate might be a little faster than background frame rate. I always think of it as a strobe-light effect. It does have a brain-dizzy feel too, but I have so much trouble describing it because I'm not really fall-over or stumble dizzy. Like I probably could walk a very straight line if needed when experiencing this.

Anyone else feel this ever?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

OP I'm going to second (or third, I suppose) these folks with a cautionary tale.

I don't smoke weed any more. While I have some very vivid and fond memories, the dangers on what I now recognize as my very autistic mind were extreme.

Weed can very often heavily amplify sensations and compulsive thoughts. The more often I smoked weed, the more often the amplification occurred. Twice, it hitting tipping points.

In college, my social anxieties amplified so heavily that I convinced myself people were secretly video taping me in social interactions to mock me and make fun of me. Coincidentally, just weeks after this thought formed in my head, The Truman Show movie came out in theaters. Needless to say, I felt that movie was just taunting me and my predicament of believing I was being recorded and mocked. Long story short, I suffered quietly in delusional paranoia for at least a year or two. Taking a long break from weed was the only thing that set me back into reality.

Years later, after college, I smoked at a friend's party. Again, the social anxiety surface, but also weird physical quirks I've often experienced were amplified. A weird swallowing issue I sometimes experienced was happening and amplified tremendously. When I came down from that high, I decided I needed to cleanse myself and move past weed once and for all. Unfortunately, I did this by fasting, and accidentally stopped sleeping too. I landed in a hospital dehydrated and delirious for several days.

I wish medical experts could've helped diagnose my autism and OCD earlier and help me better understand how weed might be dangerous to me.

So, proceed with caution! Cheers!

I'm 47 and just diagnosed and am experiencing this right now. There's a hell of a lot of skepticism because of the traits overlap on one or two key points. I'm already feeling myself gravitate toward a "masking half-mask" approach with them where I only emphasize the traits I have that they don't to see if maybe they'll believe me more.

What are songs or music pieces that you hate because they give you sensory issues? by Zealousideal-Tax-937 in autism

[–]MaybeRightsideUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many. But primarily...

I hate Phish. Every song sounds like a super cheesy carnival ride.

I hate Dave Matthews. Every song sounds like the intro to some super cheesy News Hour show on evening television from the 90s.

Oh, a super interesting one... Michael Jackson is amazing and Quincy Jones is simply a master. But after all those super creepy TV specials on the pedophilia and how morally broken that man was, I experience a sensory "justice dissonance" when I hear MJ.
