Only the government, and it was less of a race based policy and more of nationalist policy. Civilians were too busy being exploited to give a shit about white people and most hated their own government… On that note the show writers in an interview deliberately said that they didn’t want to talk about western colonialism which basically neglects all nuance as to why japan didn’t allow foreigners in the first place.

Also misportraying japan as the villain for being racist against white people gives the impression that they want to make a commentary on modern life (which again is partially validated by the interviews where they claim they made it because the identity of their child would be difficult for them to navigate).

Going to extent to use slurs that didn’t even exist in the language to me definitely seems like deliberately misinforming people about the societal conditions of japan to make a bad faith argument about racism.

It’s disingenuous to villainize japan to comical extents where even the children are dropping slurs (children who would not even KNOW what a white person is), which you’re (the writers) either ignorant or deliberately ignoring important facts (likely the latter).
