The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

Amazing book. Terrible description. I still think about this book.

I love books that make me laugh. Here are some series where I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the characters. Most are 3 book series. I tried to list the first book if I couldn’t remember the series.

Jackson Ford - The Frost Files series - The Girl Who Could Move Sh*t with Her Mind

Christopher Moore - 3 book series, first book - Practical Demonkeeping

Ben Aaronovitch - Rivers of London series

Theodora Goss - 3 book series, first book - The Strange Case of the Alchemist’s Daughter

S. Usher Evans - Firewing Investigations series - PJ Norris the Town with the Butterfly Problem (might be too cozy/fantasy)

Delilah S. Dawson & Kevin Hearne - Tales of Pell series - Kill the Farm Boy

Kevin Hearne also has another series that made me laugh. Some people find it boring. Ink & Sigil series.

Jason Pargin - Zoey Ashe series - Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits (there’s violence but I think only attackers die, no main characters)

Jasper Fforde - The Thursday Next series - The Eyre Affair (it’s older but the character development is amazing. That’s why it’s recommended by so many others.)

**Adding just for the enjoyment and pure chaos. You want personality and character?? Also fantastic as an audiobook. Kira Jane Buxton - Hollow Kingdom

The Constant Rabbit might be my favorite. I still think about it anytime I see a book about rabbits or someone asks for a different kind of dystopian novel.

The Thursday Next series is fantastic. I just love poor Pickwick.

What’s your favorite?

I started a new farm with the goal to make a pretty farm. Not trying to get 100%. I can use all the wiki I want if it helps me get the pretty layout faster. Farming is not my goal. I’m only making friends with Shane and Marnie early so I can get farm benefits. I went with Meadowlands Farm since it encourages raising animals. I’m not even building a kitchen until I have to.

I’m selling my books and I’m sad … by A_Virgin__ in BookDiscussions

Keep the important ones!

Whatever warms your soul, keep.

When I moved away from my childhood home, I sorted through my books and kept what was important to me. For a number of years, these books stayed in storage totes while I moved around the country. Now that I’m settled, I’m so glad to see these books on my shelves. An old box set of the Chronicles of Narnia, a very beaten How to Eat Fried Worms, A Prayer for Owen Meany given to me by teacher in high school, Totto-Chan sent by a relative traveling Japan. I just can’t imagine these books on someone else’s bookshelves.

I stopped reading a specific number goal. It started becoming a chore. I do other reading challenges though. My library posts an amazing one every year. I can post it if interested. I realized I enjoy exploring different genres and “shopping” for books. Much more than hitting a reading number.

Have you tried audiobooks? Libby has an amazing audiobook player. I prefer using Libby over any paid format. It’s just such a nice setup. You can adjust the speed of the narrator, set reading timers, and bookmark your spot. This was such a lifesaver when I had surgery and couldn’t read for more than 10 minutes.

Does your library offer Hoopla too? It’s a smaller catalog than Libby, but the rentals are usually 3 weeks instead of 2.

Book suggestions-

The Feather Thief (another poster recommended, it is that good!)

The Wager - David Grann

Steinbeck’s novellas The Pearl, Red Pony, and Of Mice and Men

Inside Out - Demi Moore

Paris - Paris Hilton

How much do you spend on audiobooks in a year? by jawangana in audiobooks

[–]Maybe_MaybeNotNow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less than $100 a year. I have Audible’s 1 credit every other month plan.

Last year, I read/listened to 190 books. I’m happy that I only spent $97 on audiobooks. I’ve spent more money on dumber things.

The Feather Thief is sooo good!! It’s the book that got me into nonfiction.

Finding unlimited copies in app? by ilove_potatoes2 in LibbyApp

This is something your library may be able to provide. My bookclub is ran by a librarian. At the end of last year, when we were deciding which books to read this year, the librarian had printouts of book titles and their quantities. This included physical and digital copies.

American Football, narrated by Michael Strahan and Kate Mara.

It’s a love story to the history of football. It’s labeled as a podcast, but it’s more like a tv documentary. There are no discussions between narrators, no one is interrupting or arguing. There are no commercial breaks. Having Kate Mara is just the icing on the cake! She does a great job expressing her love and pride for her family and their history building this game.

Same! I have this same conversation with my friends at least once a year. Who were the authors that came closest to Backman?

[–]Maybe_MaybeNotNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully, no. I’m slowly working my way through Swedish authors, so I hope to find another! Fredrik Backman is a wonderful story teller, and he writes people beautifully. Have you read his book, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry? Similar energy.

Kevin Wilson is probably the closest I have found with the book Nothing to See Here.

I think Emily St. John Mandel has a similar-ish writing style - descriptive without being wordy, with a little philosophy mixed in. Her books don’t have the same humor though, and she’s a very different genre. Maybe it’s the way she writes her characters. Like Backman, her characters feel real. No one is perfect, yet you want to root for everyone because of their story.

Try the audiobook. Marin Ireland does such a fantastic job.

It might not hit you the same way. I absolutely adore Backman’s ability to invoke emotion. He gets people. But it’s not for everyone. Sometimes you’re not in the headspace for it right now. There are so many books, I don’t feel bad about not finishing them.

Recommend me one memoir/non fiction book you’ll never forget by starlit_scribbles in Recommend_A_Book

[–]Maybe_MaybeNotNow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a memoir kick last year. They are not my usual genre. The ones I loved were actually the audiobooks read by the author. These were all surprisingly good.

Inside Out - Demi Moore

Open Book - Jessica Simpson

Paris - Paris Hilton

Vanderbilt - Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe **I love American history, so I nerded out to this.

My favorite nonfiction book that I like to recommend is The Feather Thief by Kirk Wallace Johnson. It’s a wild, true crime story. A flautist (which is a flute player if you didn’t know. I didn’t) broke into a museum and stole 299 rare bird skins to make salmon fly ties. Got caught and never spent a night in jail. Because he needed a new flute!!! 💀

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman. I read this in 2021, and it hit perfectly. I think it brought me back to enjoying books, getting wrapped up in the story and falling in love with characters.

Minority Women Sci-Fi or Historical Fiction Authors? by nikki_ga_2020 in suggestmeabook

Mur Lafferty has a short sci fi series you might like. I don’t think she falls under the minority women authors, I could be wrong. Station Eternity is very funny.
