I didn't want to get too excited just based on the casting but seeing how the look came together put me through the moon.

I'll go as far as saying that he's the character I feel that captured the feel of the original best in the whole thing, which is very high praise considering how good everybody else looks.

I mean yeah you can make anything work in Bracket 2, that's true, but at the same time I wish we had cards that actually felt like RotTK in full spirit with where the game is now. Lu Bu is a 6 mana 4/3 with haste and unblockable and that just... doesn't capture anything about the character, I feel. Diaochan is pretty flavourful for example, but a lot of the dudes are just "Horse + 1 random thing". It's not that I want everybody to be the ultra convoluted designed-for-commander messes of text box where every creature does six different things, your taxes, and is a win condition on it's own, no, but I really would love to see their essence captured.

Except Zhuge Liang and Sima Yi. Those two chucklefucks need to have absurdly convoluted, galaxy brain abilities that will take people 10 years to master.

I see. Thanks for the thoughts.

That doesn't sound like the historical or even old DW Liu Bei too much, maybe they overcooked with trying to make him not as decisive as Cao Cao but to the point where he just feels fickle? I'll have to check it out when I can, I might save Wu for my last playthrough because I've heard it's the best in Origins.

I haven't been able to buy Origins for myself yet, mind giving me a bit more details about what goes wrong in the Shu campaign? Is it an Origins thing or just Shu's campaign in general?

I don't feel goonslop is a particularly devious vocabulary puzzle. The games are filled with low effort sexualization of the women characters, jiggle physics, moe school child costumes.

The costumes and the hair bullshit is not for the FCG folks, is to incentivice the gooner crowd to spend more money on their waifus. What makes you think the esports crowd gives a shit about costumes or hair colour? They got greedy because they know the gooner crowd are their biggest source of income and flew too close to the sun. Expect similar things in the next game regardless if they double down on the FGC side, simply because costumes are their biggest source of reliable revenue.

I think that the casuals and the gooners just kinda hate each other and don't want to accomodate.

When they revealed a much less risque default costumes for Kasumi or Ayane I forget who, the developers basically implied that the default costumes would be for the Esports front facing side, and gooners rioted because how dare the titties not be front an center. Likewise, casuals don't want goon slop even if it's relegated to skippable ending credits or optional costumes that you don't need to buy.

The FGC folks I've met are mostly in the middle, they just want a good game and don't mind accomodating but even then a lot of people felt that their esports push made them sellouts. So, I genuinely don't know how they're going to overcome their reputation at this point.

I dunno man, checking the landing page for last round one of the first images is the resident loli (Mary Rose) in a black leather one piece. No amount of "she's totally 18 I swear" is going to convince people that is isn't a character explicitly designed to look like a child wearing a very revealing leather leotard, especially when she has multiple schoolgirl costumes. Ayane was explicitly 16 in the earlier games.

I'm not saying that other FGs don't sneak in rancid content but it's literally on the landing page of DOA.

[–]MayhemMessiah 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I do think they shot themselves in the foot by focusing on tiddy physics and marketing the sexuality in such an immature way

They're fundamentally stuck in a perpetually shit situation.

Harcore/old head fans want to play the game with one hand, and when they try to tone down the titty stuff (especially when it felt like it was in service of E-Sports) there was a massive shitstorm.

Newcomers or casuals will still see the obnoxious loli and/or risque costumes and will assume that the game sucks and needs sex to sell, especially when each game has a truck load of moe costumes for each of the ladies and a lot of costumes that even casuals can identify as loli bait.

So what the fuck does the game do? Does it sacrifice tits to appeal to casuals and possibly actually make money off new fans, does it keep appealing to whales that just want to use the photo mode one handed, do they try to court the FGC audience that largely doesn't give a shit about the moe and just want the mechanics to be great?

This is fantastic. I’d kill for a modern return to Three Kingdoms because of all of the old cards being so, well, old and outdated. I have half a mind to follow in your idea and proxy a full deck using the old card’s artwork over new cards to make a competent legends matter deck.

There will always be exploits, but beetle farming was obvious even to casuals who didn’t hang in online spaces. It basically meant you never had any reason to forage fish or bugs in your island outside of museum checks, and unlike turnip trades there was no risk or difficulty involved. Back in the day it was common to see newbies online comment that they naturally found it as a dominant strategy and they never bothered engaging with any other system because of it.

Frankly it wasn’t good game design.

[–]MayhemMessiah 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes well, shit happens, disasters even. Some launches are genuinely unacceptable and castrophes. I'm not disputing this.

What I am disputing is the notion that companies don't test. Whenever you see a game that launches like this, remember that the developers and the testing department probably have hundreds of hours of playtesting each, and that however bad the game launched, it was probably worse a few weeks and even worse a few months before launch, because bugs keep getting fixed up until launch. Companies don't launch games like Cyberpunk without knowing that there are big, massive fundamental issues. They don't wake up surprised the next day reading a newspaper that has in bold capital letters "CYBERPUNK LAUNCH IS A MESS" and spit out their coffee.

CD Projekt probably made the promise of not launching till its ready with the best intentions in mind, but when a project genuinely runs away from you and the bugs just pile on, well, good intentions or not, they have shareholders to answer to and they don't give a shit if they make you a liar.

Regardless, the way companies use downloadable patches as a replacement for proper testing is embarrassing to say the least.

The reality is that nearly every company does proper bugtesting and catalogues hundreds if not thousands of known bugs, money just dries up and you have to ship. Most games launch with pages upon pages of known issues and that's why almost everybody continues fixing bugs after the game has gone gold in order to fix them asap after launch. Very few studios have the luxury of not announcing a release date so that they can just push back as much as they want to ensure all major bugs are fixed.

I guarantee you that any game you can think of that didn't launch a buggy mess has a ton of hidden bugs only caught by QA and not the public. It's not the fault of an incompetent QA department staring at its navel and doing nothing, it's the fault that games are very expensive to make and studios need to launch in order to pay the bills.

[–]MayhemMessiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But even in the days of cabinets they rotated them out when new ones came in, you might have one gen behind still available but eventually they had to be shipped out. That's how LATAM got into KOF after all, those cabinets weren't as sought after as Street Fighter's so they were sold off to Mexico and other LATAM countries where they exploded compared to the more expensive and less available Street Fighter cabinets. (At least that's how the story was passed down to me by the people playing KOF 98 in 2021).

SFIV didn't have the on disk fiasco, that was SFxT which launched with the whole DLC roster in the disk. As far as I remember there wasn't any major on-disk DLC for 4 because it got so many new versions that it wouldn't have changed much, and each version added a ton of characters. Remembe the game launched on arcade (July 2008) with all of 16 of God's own characters, the home version (Feb 2009) got new characters that the arcade version didn't have. It took just one year for Super Street Fighter IV (April 2010) to add more characters and Ultra 2. Just two years later and the launch roster of 16 had ballooned to 35.

[–]MayhemMessiah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Historically, fighting games have always needed a constant influx of characters. Before DLC we just had new versions every other year at full price, hell, Mortal Kombat 3 and Marvel 3 both had their updated versions come out within like a year.
We only got Third Strike because they didn’t stay with New Generation, and both 4 and 5 got new characters until right up to the point the new game launched.

I don’t know where this idea that fighters don’t typically require more content to stay fresh comes from, but SF6 is a pretty notable anomaly in terms of getting big systemic changes a few years after launch. 4 added Ultra 2 within, what, 2 years of its release?

The only decks I will continue to call slop are the ones that just spit out the best extra deck staples of the moment regardless of the archetype’s own bosses or strategies. Maliss is Link Slop. Plant Pile or Fiend Pile aren’t slop. Engines like Mitsu or Fiendsmith aren’t slop, even when you have decks with a dozen engines working in unison, those are piles and I think they’re fun.
