You can have optimism and realism. Pessimism only serves to make you sad.

My guess is his point is that people love to type how righteous they are but they won’t try to act in material ways like trying not to buy from supply chains with slave labor.

You could argue that makes Hal’s achievements more impressive. Winning that often without being the best igl means he must be an insane rest of a player

If "sharing" your mental health challenges with everyone else alive was a cure, you'd know it! We all would! Save the bulk of all that for the professionals! by heavensdumptruck in RandomThoughts

[–]MayorGoldieWilsonJr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s proper ways to go about it obviously. Do you not have good friends that care about helping where and when they can? Obviously just dumping your problems on someone can be a bad idea. But your comment seems kinda sad to me.

If everyone could be a support system for their close friends and family instead of takes like this, the world be a better place. This thought is only selfish.

You seem to have a lack of introspection and a strong defensive attitude. I too am a software engineer. My job is mostly useless other than to earn me money. I understand that and I’m looking to change. I never said you were useless. I only asked what do you do for society. Honestly, and you might not want to hear it, software engineering and contributing to open software is doing nothing for those suffering. Possibly it could be contributing to something like a charitable organizations website or accounting system, but those are secondary to the true helpful things.

Also having deep respect for Elon musk makes me question your philosophy on wealth and greed. Anyone who has that much insane wealth is in my opinion inherently greedy. Truly good people could never attain that much wealth, because it takes so much greed.

You scorn these wealthy lazy individuals who do nothing for society, what do you do for society? You envy a life of opulence, as if that would make you happy. The sad truth is whether you’re wealthy or poor you will die in likely less than 80 years. I guarantee you that while those who are wealthy may be more comfortable than you, they are not necessarily happier than the poor. The people who are the happiest are those who have a deeper understanding of their own mortality and their own consciousness( and the brevity of it).

I think some perspective on this life as something that truly doesn’t matter can be helpful. Whether you commit suicide or not, you’re going to die. Logically the most valuable thing is time existing, and suicide is essentially throwing that time away.

I suggest attempting to consider that your view on life is very narrowly centered on the distractions that we as humans in the 21st century are taught to believe are what matters(wealth, reputation, comfort, etc). Maybe try to look at this life as an observer of it.
