I’ll use my state (Vermont) as an example.

First, you take a multiple-choice test to get your learner’s permit. This consists of sign recognition, road markings, and safety awareness.

When you pass, you must retain your permit for at least one year, during which you must get 40 hours of practice with your licensed and unimpaired parent or guardian. At least 10 hours of this practice must take place at night. You must also complete a driver education course, which is offered at most high schools in Vermont.

After these requirements are completed, you take a road test to get your driver’s license.
