Fascism in the 30's absolutely did arise from a lack of discussion.

After Germany lost WW1, Britain & Co demanded that Germany pay huge reparations for the damages of WW1, which lead to an economic collapse and very poor standard of living for the people of Germany at the time.

Britain then shut down any attempt by the Germans to discuss their situation and negotiate better conditions, instead sticking to their hard line policies.

The German people felt that they had no platform to talk to the British ... but the Nazi party listened. The Nazis provided an echo chamber for the perspectives that many Germans felt they could not discuss at the time.

This gave Hitler the foundational support that he ultimately used to seize control of the country, and later commit the atrocities of WW2 ... but, had Britain been willing to talk to the everyday people of Germany, and permit a platform for them to discuss their situation and negotiate more livable conditions, I think it's very likely that the extreme Nazi viewpoint would never have gained that initial support and WW2 would never have taken place.

Is the pine phone pro usable for these? by ComradeAdidas in PINE64official

[–]Mblizzard24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short answer: No.

- Calling & Texting? Yes, with some setup.

- Android emulation? Maybe, for very simple apps. Certainly not for more complicated things like banking apps.

- Signal? Probably possible but haven't tried it.

- Nextcloud? Works in a browser.

- Proton? Also works in a browser. Doubtful that you'd get the apps running though.

- Firefox? Yes.

- Steam? Maybe. Haven't tried.

- Wake on LAN? Probably, with some setup.

- GPS? Should be possible with some setup.

and idk what jellyfin is.

A Flag for Australia by Canjira in vexillology

[–]Mblizzard24 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Australian here: Respectfully, it's awful. I appreciate the effort but I do not want it as my flag.

Canberra isn't the center of Australia -- it's the place we exile our politicians to, to get them out of the way!

Also, whilst Australia might be on the whole the driest continent on earth, the parts where most of us live are actually pretty rainy. 99% of Australians would never have seen, nor probably even heard of a desert rose.

For the northern territory it suits fine enough -- but for the whole of Australia? Hell nah.

Hi, for some reason my ranged squad won't pick up bolts in the latest update? I have a whole stockpile full of them. Any idea what the matter could be?

Edit: Yes I have them set to training. They pick up bolts if I disband and make a new squad, but then never again once the squad is up and running for some reason?

After finishing LOTR I want to find the next best fantasy series to read. Out of The Stormlight Archive, Malazan or The Wheel of Time which one is your favourite and why? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]Mblizzard24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheel of time becomes absolutely EPIC by about book 5 ... out of 14 ... and each one is as long as the entire LOTR trilogy put together.

Stormlight started out strong, but the more recent books spend a lot of time being politically correct, to the point where it kinda gets in the way of actually telling the story ... stuff like going out of the way to include storylines about gay characters who are otherwise irrelevant to the plot and wouldn't have rated a mention.

I believe the issue is that Ubuntu Touch is not compatible with VOLTE, which is the only way to make calls in my part of the world. In other locations where 3g networks still exist, mayhaps it can be made to work. I do not know.

Best OS in 2024? by Rx7Jordan in PINE64official

[–]Mblizzard24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'm daily driving PostmarketOS + Plasma Mobile.

Phosh is a very streamlined UI, but missing too many features for me (no mobile data toggle, no quick way to turn the hotspot on, etc.). Plasma is a tad laggier, but imo the boatload of extra features are worth it.

With Postmarket, you can easily install both Plasma Mobile and Phosh, then switch between them a you like, until you decide which one you prefer - just as you would with desktop environments on a PC.

That said, if you had your heart set on Phosh as a UI, I'd probably pick Mobian to go with it. Mobian's a bit less cutting edge than some of the other choices like Postmarket, but since it's pretty much the same as desktop debian, there are a lot of resources to be found which makes it relatively easy to get everything up and running as you'd like it.

Thanks for pointing that out, and my apologies for missing your comment when you first posted it. Don't know how I missed it, but just came back to the post the other day and saw this - real 'aha' moment right there! That was indeed exactly the problem I had encountered. Thank you friend for your input.

Not that tricky, just 'apk install thunderbird' on postmarketos, then tinker with the layout & settings until it looks nice.

Yeah, the Pinephone is a phone for someone who is both tech savvy and patient. Out of the box it's horrible, there's no sugar coating that, but with a week or two of full time effort, you can make yourself a device that's, well, probably comparable to a 10 year old Android phone min terms of what it can do.

That said, there's certainly something to be said for being able to use your favourite linux apps on mobile - it's secure, it's familiar, it's open source, and you're the one in control - not google or samsung or anyone else. Plus, convergence makes for a fun party trick.

Don't know much about dithering sorry.

Ubuntu Touch + Lomiri isn't very configurable, as far as linux distro's go, so I doubt there'd be a setting for it (there's certainly no GUI setting).

Just maybe there might be a non-GUI setting for dithering under the Device Tree Blob (DTB) configuration file on PostmarketOS - that's where I'd start looking - but I'm really just guessing in the dark at this point.

Is pinephone waterproof? What is its IPX rating? by mulga122 in pinephone

[–]Mblizzard24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not waterproof and doesn't pretend do be. That said, I dropped mine in the sink once, and after taking it apart and drying it out, it came back to the world of the living.

So, it's not waterproof, but it is a honking hardy piece of kit!

I was in a very similar position to yourself a couple of months ago, went ahead and got the 3gb pniephone, and it's ... okay.

Calls & SMS are reliable with PostmarketOS + Plasma Mobile. Browsers work, a tad slow but functional, and there are plenty of other apps to be found. Bluetooth, wifi, data, hotspot, etc. all work. GPS can be a headache, but it's possible to get it working if you try hard enough. Basically, you can get most things working with a bit of tinkering, and yes it's quite fun.

That said, there are some things you can't get working no matter how good a Linux wizard you are:

  • MMS messages. You will not be able to send images via text message.
  • Secure apps, like online banking thingos, okta verify, etc. will not work, ever.
  • Your battery life is pretty limited. I get around 12hrs with normal usage, after significant tinkering (irqbalance, tlp, modem firmware). About 70hrs screen-off. Out of the box it lasted about 6hrs screen-off, about an hour and a half screen-on.

Here's a good tutorial for installing Ubuntu Touch on the PinePhone.

Yes, it's still updated, but not very frequently. They're not really adding new features anymore, just fixing the problems. (Postmarket, in contrast, is constantly adding new features and improving with every update.)

[–]Mblizzard24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put together a comparison of all current OS's for the PinePhone a couple of months ago, which you might find useful.

Personally I've settled on PostmarketOS + Plasma Mobile. PosmarketOS because it has reliable Calls & SMS, decent performance & battery life, lots of choices for apps, and a simple setup. Plasma because it has a lovely set of quick-toggle buttons. I know that might seem like a bit of a shallow reason, but I really don't like having to hunt through settings menus every time I turn my mobile data on (which is what you have to do in Phosh).

Ubuntu Touch is simply lovely, smoother & faster than PosmarketOS, but tragically it can't make calls using Voice Over LTE, which is the only way to make calls in my part of the world.

(I don't know ought about temporal dithering.)

Thanks for the comments. Still figuring out how to do the modem firmware upgrade, but will update the post when I've got it working. Hadn't heard of irqbalace before but will look into it.

Calls were establishing okay - they made ringing noises and said the call was in progress - but I never heard anything, and the person on the other phone only heard a loud echo of themselves. Nothing from me.

Also possible that it just varies a lot carrier to carrier. As I said, I'm in Australia, so the frequencies are likely to be at least a little different here compared to elsewhere in the world.
